The effects of architecture go beyond creating beautiful spaces to enjoy or inspiring people’s passion for colors and styles. It is an integral part of our society and culture.
Many theories exist about how architectural shapes influence social behavior, but there are two major themes that stand out. These concepts can be categorized as either power or neutrality.
Power-oriented theories suggest that certain shapes have intrinsic powerful qualities that affect others around them. For example, a square room with a wall all the way across makes space seem more solid and in control. A circle invites participation and interaction.
Neutrality-orientated theories believe that buildings without any specific shaping principles are neutral, leaving users free to interpret them however they want. This includes thinking about the space in terms of size, shape, and layout.
This article will talk about some examples of power and neutrality theory, what types of architectures fit which theory, and then some potential applications of this knowledge. But first, let us look at some examples.
Examples
Two examples of power oriented theories are the Golden Ratio and the Pentagon. Both refer to universal proportions found in nature.
The golden ratio was originally discovered by Greek mathematician Euclid over 2,000 years ago! He used it to create proportionate ratios for geometric figures suchas squares, rectangles, and triangles.
A related concept is called Fibonacci numbers.

Art is a form of expression that goes beyond depicting nature or famous people or even dreams, it is an outlet for internal experiences and emotions. Artists use materials such as paint, clay, and iron to express themselves!
Artists develop their skills by practicing, studying, and experimenting with different styles, colors, shapes, and textures. They also learn how to collaborate with other artists and integrate new techniques into their work.
Architecture is a style that uses space, material, and pattern to tell stories and influence perceptions. Buildings not only look beautiful, but they also send powerful messages about who built them and what they want to communicate to others.
Many think of skyscrapers as strong, solid symbols of power, while some see them as tall signs advertising for big business. Others associate buildings with spirituality because of their shape and decoration.
Society changes due to developments in technology, politics, economy, and entertainment, so architects are influenced by these areas. Some designers take notes from popular culture and fashion to create new trends.
However, society does not always change for the better. Powerful people use intimidation and force to keep up their control over others.
Powerful individuals gain prestige through wealth or position, which can motivate those around them to do things for their personal reward rather than moral reasons.
After reading this article, you should be able to discuss the importance of architectural design along with the effects it can have on society.

In his book Theories of Knowledge, Thomas Kuhn famously argued that there are actually three different types of knowledge. He called this type “empirical” because it comes directly from sense experience- things like seeing, touching, and eating. Mathematical or logical truths belong to the second category, which he referred to as “a priori” since they depend only on principles of logic and reasoning. Finally, what we call "theory" is really just someone's opinion, so it belongs in the third group.
Kuhn thought that most people have a very limited amount of empirical knowledge but tend to take for granted that all theories in their domain (mathematics, physics, etc.) are true. This means that they assume that whatever conclusions they draw from past experiences will always be correct, even if those conclusions do not make sense according to theory.
He believed that our normal way of thinking about truth was too influenced by empiricism. We associate ideas such as certainty, proof, and rationality with either a) statements that seem reasonable based on experiential evidence or b) mathematical formulas that can be checked using experimental methods.
According to Kuhn, however, these concepts did not apply to questions of aesthetics. Take, for example, two buildings with similar shapes and colors. Even though one may look more appealing than the other, no one could prove which one is better designed until they were built and seen under real conditions.

The influence of buildings on society is vast, much deeper than most people realize. Buildings not only tell you who someone is as a person, they can tell us something about how they want to be perceived by the world.
We look at a building or monument and feel some kind of internal reaction that goes beyond “this is beautiful” or “I would like to go in there”.
Many theories exist to explain what these reactions are but no one really agrees on anything definitive.
Some say it is due to our instincts telling us something about the structure or design reminds them of another setting, system or environment where things worked well for them before so we subconsciously compare the two and determine if this looks good or not.
For example, if you were going into an empty room then windows would make it seem larger and give an illusion of space which would help motivate others to enter. If the window was painted black however, it would reduce the sense of size and could create feelings of fear or vulnerability depending on the viewer.
This effect will always play with your instinctual psychology, just like any other part of your body.
Another theory suggests that when we enter a new area, place or context, our brains take time to process all the information it receives and organize it, this takes energy which makes us feel tired or stressed. A lot of times, those feelingsthat arise are related to past experiences or events.

Some of the most well-known buildings include the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and the Chrysler Building in New York City. These structures have inspired many other building designs or mimicked their style.
The Torre Agbar in Barcelona is shaped like a slender vertical cylinder with an inclined roof. This shape was influenced by the Chrysler Building and has become very popular. The AT&T Center in San Francisco uses similar angles to create its design.
Another example is the “skinny” skyscraper that features only one floor up from the ground level. This originated from Frank Lloyd Wright and his Usonian house concept.
This type of structure was later adapted for use in urban areas where land is limited. It is common to see such skinny skyscrapers in major cities around the world. Many people refer to these as “Wrightian” because of his influence.
These types of buildings show how architects not only focus on designing beautiful houses but also inspire new ways to develop landscapes and neighborhoods. They leave their lasting legacy through creativity and experimentation.

Some say that New York’s Empire State Building is ugly, but this isn’t true — it’s actually quite beautiful! If anything, people seem to think too much about how things look rather than what they do.
The Empire State Building has been around for over 100 years now, so its looks have changed many times. At one time, however, it was very different – much more simple and straightforward. Back then, architects didn’t use advanced computer technology to design buildings, which is why most of them looked similar.
Architects would create designs by drawing on paper or in their heads, making sure everything matched together smoothly and properly. Then, they would build models using plasticine (sort of like soft clay) or wooden shapes to show how all these pieces fit together.
From there, their drawings would get refined into actual structures made out of steel, glass, and other materials. It is interesting to note that even though engineers designed these buildings, architects were also needed for something else: creativity. They had to envision how each element of the building would look before being built.
Another reason why architecture is important is because it can influence others. People who enjoy looking at beautifully decorated buildings may feel inspired to make their own homes or businesses resemble such facilities. Or maybe they’ll choose to become an architect instead of designing houses or businesses.

One such overlooked element is how architecture impacts society. Who your building designs appeal to, what messages they send about our culture and values, and whether these messages are positive or negative are all significant factors in creating socially stable environments.
Architecture can have indirect effects as well. For example, the surrounding neighborhood environment has an impact on individual behavior and lifestyles. Buildings that are surrounded by similar buildings are more likely to create communities and socialize individuals, while isolated buildings may contribute to loneliness and depression.
Furthermore, the aesthetics of a space can influence how people feel about it. Spaces that are beautifully designed seem “just right” and make us feel relaxed and calm, whereas spaces that are not aesthetically pleasing make us feel stressed out or uncomfortable.
Society is constantly changing, and architects should be aware of this. Different cultures bring together different ideologies and beliefs, which shape societal norms and relationships. It is the job of architects to design beautiful spaces that fit within these cultural contexts.

The loss of community spirit is one major challenge we face as citizens in our cities. People have become increasingly isolated due to the nature of work.
We spend most of our time at our jobs, so when we get home we go straight to sleep or turn on television or computer screen service that takes away from spending time with family and friends.
At night, we retreat into our individual bedrooms where we watch TV or use technology until we fall asleep. In the morning, we rush out the door for work before we find ourselves together again until late afternoon when we have lunch or meetings.
If you’re an architect, your job can sometimes seem like a solitary one. You may be working long hours alone, and even going home alone because there is no one else around.
Architecture has always been a design discipline that encourages teamwork, but this isn’t necessarily the case now. As I mentioned earlier, people in architecture positions are often paid very well, which incentivizes them to maintain a high level of productivity while still being able to afford their expensive lifestyles.
This doesn’t set up strong bonds of loyalty within the workplace. It also means that individuals don’t collaborate much outside of the office; they keep to themselves unless someone comes across something related to their field that they know about.

Recent architectural trends have focused on bringing back classic styles or incorporating new materials into designs. Materials like steel, wood, and other recyclable or renewable resources can be used to create aesthetically pleasing pieces that emphasize sustainability.
Sustainability is important because it impacts how people live their lives. If we all lived in beautiful homes with sustainable materials, this would reduce the amount of energy needed to produce and use these products. It would also increase overall happiness due to the beauty of the surroundings.
There are many ways to incorporate more environmentally friendly materials into your home design. Some examples include using recycled material in flooring or for furniture, using natural light instead of electricity for illumination, and reducing water consumption by choosing rain gutters that direct water away from the roof.
These changes will help mitigate the negative effects that our current lifestyle has on the environment. They are also cost-effective long term solutions that do not require too much effort to implement.
