How Architecture Began

There are many theories about how human beings evolved into today’s sophisticated species, but one of the most popular is called the evolutionary theoryof Darwin. This theory suggests that we as humans develop qualities such as empathy, compassion, and cooperation because they help us survive in our environment.

If I don’t have enough food to eat, then people with more food than me will feel sorry for me and give me some so I can live. If someone is threatening me or my family, then I will try to avoid hurting them by leaving or telling other people what happened. And if there is no way for me to escape an attacker, then I will try to distract him/her until someone helps me. All of these behaviors make it less likely that I would be hurt myself or that others would get hurt because I didn’t.

These survival skills helped early humans thrive in their environments, which made them pass on their genes and contribute to future generations. So, being able to identify a threat and take action to prevent it makes sense biologically.

Architecture plays a huge role in this process. It looks at where nature puts things and copies that pattern. Natural patterns come from natural materials and shapes that work together to keep everything else out, protect things inside, and let light in. Buildings use this fundamental design concept to create strong internal structures and external defenses.

The development of cities

how architecture began

In ancient times, people lived in small villages or tribes that were self-sufficient and close to nature. They built simple structures such as huts and tents made out of natural materials like wood and stone.

Architecture was not an important part of culture until the Greeks. At this time, large buildings with roofs were constructed using strong, durable materials which allowed for better air circulation and protection from the weather.

The Romans perfected the art of building by incorporating beautiful patterns into their architecture. These decorations are called ornamentation and it is still one of the main components of architectural styles today.

It took many centuries before architects began thinking about how things related to each other. As early as 200 BC, Plato discussed the importance of proportion and symmetry in his work The Republic. He also mentioned the relationship between light and dark as a source of inspiration.

The development of culture

Many believe that architecture began with the ancient Greeks, but this is not true. While there are some structures built by early civilizations like those in Egypt and Mexico that have been preserved, most historians agree that buildings did not emerge as an art form until around 2,000 years ago in India.

Architecture was mostly practiced by wealthy people at this time because it took a lot of resources to be able to create one. Architects were usually masters of several disciplines, such as sculpture, painting, and mathematics, which they applied to designing beautiful spaces.

It was only after the introduction of literacy during the Roman Empire that architects started using writing as a way to document their work. Documentation allowed for others to build from their designs or learn from their styles. This is how we get our first examples of architectural style — look at the arches used in Gothic churches, for instance.

With the rise of Islam and Christianity, new building traditions emerged. For example, Islamic mosques feature a special place where worshipers can sit to focus on prayer while also looking out over the surrounding area. Christian cathedrals often feature large windows to invite visitors into sacred space.

The development of science

In ancient Greece, architects were known as “geometers” – people who studied geometry to determine how best to organize space in buildings.

Geometry was integral to their design process. They would measure out distances between various points and shapes and figure out which angles needed to be bigger or smaller for it to feel comfortable.

Architects still use this concept of geometry when designing spaces, but now they call it interior or exterior decoration. They look at where all the furniture will go and make sure that everything fits together nicely and intuitively.

The Ancient Greeks also gave us one of the first examples of systematic reasoning we know today as logic. We still teach this lesson through argumentation, or talking about something with reasons and proof.

Another term linked to these two is proportion, which comes from the word propor-tionate, meaning appropriate in size. Systems of proportions work because no matter what shape object you put next to another, it looks right.

Systems have become very popular in architecture, especially since Le Corbusier invented his style called Neoclassicism. He designed many beautiful buildings using repeated patterns and proportions.

The development of art

how architecture began

A long, long time ago there were no buildings to design. Buildings did not exist as we know them today!

Architecture is an integral part of our daily lives. It impacts how we feel about our surroundings and it shapes how we perceive life. We admire beautiful buildings, from the towering skyscrapers to elaborate palaces and temples.

The architecture of ancient times was influenced by their culture. For example, during the Roman Empire they built tall arches in place of windows because they wanted to emphasize size over natural light.

It wasn’t until around 2,000 years later that people began building structures for practical purposes. This is when architects begin developing the discipline.

Until then, anyone could build anything — or so people thought. As early builders started constructing their own homes, they realized that what made a house stay warm and dry was having its ceilings higher than the roof.

So they designed roofs with lower ceilings, which eventually led to the shape we know today as the dome.

These simple changes gave us the basic framework of the very first architectural styles.

The development of engineering

how architecture began

Before there was architecture, people built things because they needed something to do with their time. They made houses and roads out of stone or metal because those were the materials available to them. Buildings constructed using these materials are what we now call structures.

As humans evolved from apes, one important change was our developing sense of aesthetics. We became more artistic as we adapted to living in larger groups, creating beautiful shapes and patterns where before there was none. This is how modern day architects began — by building upon what came before.

Architecture is not an academic discipline like studying math or literature; it is not learned through formal education. Rather, it is a practical skill that comes naturally to some, but can be practiced by anyone. It takes inspiration from nature and mathematics and mixes it together to create unique buildings that tell stories.

Many believe that modern day architectural styles originate from Greece, but this is not quite true! Ancient Greeks built incredible structures using very basic shapes and concepts. Some of these designs were even improved upon later on! For example, the ancient Greek columns are an excellent shape used for lots of different things; they can be made into pillars or ceilings with just slightly altering proportions.

Architecture as we know it now originated in India. Here, architects designed roofs using special curves called “shapes”. These roof shapes would be copied and adapted many times over throughout history. A famous example of this is the curved rooftop you will often see on Indian homes, which was first invented there 5,000 years ago!

The origins of Gothic style buildings go back to early Christian churches, where large arches were used to create spacious interior spaces. This style eventually spread beyond religious use and became popular again during the Renaissance period.

These three examples show that the basics of architecture have been around for a long time! If people were building beautiful looking houses five hundred years ago, then what qualities did they include? Well, it seems like they focused on how well the house fit into its surrounding area and space, as well as making the most out of every square foot.

This article will talk more about the importance of setting up your home office properly, as well as some easy tips to do so.

The evolution of architecture

how architecture began

It is impossible to talk about the origins of architectural styles without talking about classical antiquity. Ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and other cultures had elaborate concepts for designing and building spaces and buildings.

These architectures have influenced almost every style we know today. Some say that Gothic architecture was inspired by ancient Rome, while others believe it was directly copied from Eastern religions.

Whatever the case may be, modern architects still use many elements and features of this era’s design. For example, the rounded arch comes from the temples in Greece and Rome, and there are even some theories that suggest the round ceiling in the Vatican Palace was designed as an homage to these sacred sites!

Another popular element — the dome — can be traced back to early Romans. They would cover their structures with thick stone or clay sheets, creating what we call a vaulted roof.

This type of roof is very efficient at protecting the structure below from rain and snow, which is why you will often find domes used in churches and cathedrals.

The Renaissance

how architecture began

During this period, buildings flourished in many different styles that are still seen today. Some of these styles include Gothic, Romanesque, Neoclassical, Art Deco, and others. All of these styles have something in common; they all use balance and proportion to show off their beautiful shapes or decorations.

Gothic architecture is probably one of the most recognizable architectural styles out there. It was inspired by natural caves and cliffs, which display strong vertical lines. This style incorporated large arches and vaults with heavy use of stone.

The Romans built tall, powerful structures that were heavily decorated and adorned with statues and symbols. Theirs was also an imperialistic style – designed to promote unity within Rome and its growing empire.

Neoclassicism focused on perfect symmetry and order. These buildings had very clean lines and lots of white marble or other materials. One example is the Washington Monument, which looks quite similar to a classical column.

Art deco made use of bright colors and geometric patterns. Many famous skyscrapers such as the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building fit into this category.

There you have it! Those are some of the major styles used for building inspiration during the renaissance.
