How Architecture Can Change The World

Recent events have exposed how little most of us know about architecture, its history, and how it shapes our lives. We are being bombarded with images and media coverage of some megachurches that seem more like sports arenas than houses of worship.

Architects now have the opportunity to make an impact beyond buildings; they can spread their message through design concepts, ideologies, and theories. Some architects actively promote political and social causes, making sure your house looks cool while also sharing your worldview.

Many famous structures use bold colors, materials, and decorations to convey a moral or ideological statement. For example, the Parthenon is adorned with large columns and marble which emphasize spirituality over materialism. The Empire State Building uses heavily ornamented geometric patterns to create a strong sense of unity.

Other popular styles include Neoclassical, which features elaborate plaster moldings and symmetrical lines, and Brutalist, which incorporates heavy natural textures and geometry. These types of architectures were designed to emphasize the importance of structure and organization in life.

This article will discuss several ways that famous architectural designs influenced the world. You will learn from this article what each building is used for, why people associate them with success, and whether these claims are true.

The Shard in London

how architecture can change the world

In May of 2010, construction began on what would become one of the most well-known buildings in the world — The Shard, an observation deck in downtown London.

The structure is unique in many ways. It’s the tallest building within walking distance of Buckingham Palace (450 meters or 1,476 feet). At 328 meters (1,099 feet), it also ranks as the third highest skyscraper in Europe after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the CN Tower in Toronto.

But perhaps its greatest feat lies not in its height, but rather its shape. Rather than being tall and thin like other glass towers, this one has been described as looking like “a giant silver knife blade slicing through the city.”

This unusual design was intentional. As the architect behind The Shard, Daniel Libeska, told Time magazine, he wanted to create a dramatic statement that people would be talking about for years to come.

After all, his inspiration came from something almost everyone has seen at least once — the famous spire of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. He even took cues from it in designing the tower’s floor plan.

However, instead of it going straight up, this one curves slightly upward before flattening out again. This gives guests a feeling of calm serenity, while still offering commanding views of both London and beyond.

The Louvre in Paris

how architecture can change the world

In 2007, an art lover walked into the Louvre with something very unusual: a laser pointer. He spent several hours exploring the museum while pointing out different parts of the paintings to visitors and other people passing by. His motive? To bring attention to the works of art that he loved and to promote understanding of them.

He started his experiment outside the Mona Lisa painting and moved onto more recent work before ending up at The Birth Of Venus, one of his favorites.

Many people didn’t know what to make of it, but many were fascinated. Some even stopped to ask questions about the artwork!

His goal was not only to draw attention to these beautiful pieces, but also to emphasize how powerful artistic depictions can be. It is easy to see why he wanted to do this, but deciding where to focus your energy as an artist is much harder.

Fortunately, he had some help. Since most people are familiar with the way artists use color, shapes, and lines to describe things, he focused on those concepts. By using these tools, he was able to clearly show the influence the masters have on others.

This article will talk about five important architects who changed the world. All of these individuals designed buildings, but some made designs that had much larger impacts than others. You should study their styles, learn from theirs, and then apply what you find to create your own style.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai

how architecture can change the world

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, standing at 2128 feet tall. It is also quite interesting to note that this skyscraper was not built with any kind of formal construction process. Rather than using scaffolding or ladders to climb up the tower, people used stairs to make their way up. This is because there are no outside walls for workers to attach onto!

The interior of the building is very striking as well. There are many different colors and patterns painted everywhere you look. All these decorations were designed by artists and then put into place by designers.

This does not happen often anymore due to the speed technology has advanced. With every passing second, architects have to be even more careful about how fast they design things so that everything fits together properly.

The Sydney Opera House

The most famous landmark in Australia is also one of the world’s greatest buildings. When you look at it, its beauty does not immediately strike you as “architecture.” Rather, what makes the building special is how it integrates into its natural setting and surrounds.

The Sydney Opera House was designed by British architect Jørn Utzon and completed in 1977. It took three years to build because he had no formal training as an artist or sculptor. He learned his craft through practicing, studying, and teaching himself.

He built his reputation internationally before being picked to design the opera house. Many people consider him to be one of the great masters of twentieth century architecture.

However, he did not consider the Sydney Opera House to be important art. In fact, he said that it would probably only hold its place among his other works after he died. He preferred referring to it as a concert hall with some windows.

It is very interesting to note this, given that it has become one of the top tourist attractions in the country. More than twenty million people have visited since it opened thirty-four years ago!

That is why he left the job two weeks early so that he could complete his final project without any stress. Even though he never considered it important art, many still feel inspired by it. His family even patented a window shape they called the “Utzon Window.

The Great Wall of China

how architecture can change the world

During the Han dynasty, which lasted from 206 BC to AD 220, Chinese architects built what we now know as the Great Wall of China. This wall was not only to protect the empire against invading tribes or armies, but it also served an additional purpose: It acted as a showpiece for the powerful elite that commissioned it.

It was both monument to their success as rulers and reminder to potential rivals that they still had political power. In this way, the Great Wall helped solidify the authority of the ruling elites in China.

Since then, the Great Wall has inspired many other cultures across Asia and Europe to build similar walls to defend themselves, or to create monuments to celebrate their military victories.

Many people refer to the Great Wall today as a symbol of national pride because it represents all that is strong and sturdy about a nation. Political leaders use it to emphasize the importance of protecting one’s home and heritage.

The Las Vegas Strip

how architecture can change the world

A great example of how architecture impacts society is the famous “strip” or, as it’s more commonly known, the Las Vegas Strip. You probably have heard of this iconic area!

The strip was constructed in the early 1950s by casino mogul Harvey Goldman. At that time, there were very few tall buildings around the area due to the desert climate.

So instead of building taller roofs or walls, Goldman decided to create an outdoor pedestrian-only mall with beautifully designed glass and steel structures. He also built hotels along the walkway so people could stay while exploring the city.

This concept has since been copied across America and other parts of the world. It is now called the urban shopping experience or the street style atmosphere. People enjoy walking down streets surrounded by beautiful skyscrapers where they can find many different shops and restaurants.

This article will talk about some examples of how architectural styles influence the environment.

The Empire State Building

how architecture can change the world

A famous building that embodies this idea is none other than our own beloved Empire State Building, which was constructed in 1929.

The Empire State Building was designed by William Van Alen, an architect who worked for some of New York City’s top firms at the time. He first made his name designing residential buildings, but he eventually ventured into more monumental projects like the Chrysler or Empire State Buildings we know today.

But why are we talking about these buildings? What do they have to do with changing the world?

It’s simple – they show us how beautiful architecture can be. They showcase the artist’s ability to create something majestic, thoughtful, and influential.

And while the Empire State Building may seem frivolous at face value, it actually has a lot to say. Here are six reasons why.

1) It shows us what people will pay money for

In 2008, Time magazine named the Empire State Building their "Heroic Monument" of the year. And why not? It's arguably one of the most recognizable structures in the world!

This isn't simply because it looks cool (though it definitely does), nor is it due to its impressive size alone (it is quite tall). No, it's all three together - beauty, scale, and influence- that make the Empire State Building worthy of such recognition.

What makes the building so striking is just how elegant and powerful it is.

The World Trade Center in New York

how architecture can change the world

In May of 2008, construction began on what would become one of the most famous buildings in America – the World Trade Centre in Manhattan. When it was completed later that year, many people knew it as the “Twin Towers” due to its uncanny resemblance to the other tower which had been destroyed just over eight years earlier.

The striking similarity between the two towers is not only their look, but also how they were designed. Both have been described as looking like lollipops layered on top of each other with steps leading down to an interior oculus (a hole or opening) at ground level. This analogy makes sense when you consider that both structures used load-bearing steel as their frame, and insulation was placed within to protect those inside from heat loss while keeping out cold air.

However, there are some key differences between the Twin Towers and any other skyscraper we know today. For starters, where normally a building has an external staircase, these twin towers had internal ones. Another difference is that the floors of the Twin Towers curved inward instead of being flat.

These unique features made them more resistant to strong winds and seismic forces than normal skyscrapers. Because they could withstand much higher loads, they were actually allowed to be taller and thinner than standard office space, giving the structure slightly different shape.

This gave the towers their well known silhouette, making them very distinctive and recognizable.
