How Architecture Is Both Science And Art

Like any other profession, there are people who view architecture as an art form and people who look at it as pure science. But most architects fall in between those two extremes where they consider their work to be a combination of both.

They emphasize aesthetics over mathematical formulas, but still use basic math (geometry, proportions, etc.) to achieve that aesthetic goal. They strive for internal consistency by incorporating fundamental concepts like balance and proportion into their designs, but also experiment with different styles or trends depending on what looks best on a given project.

Furthermore, not only do architects have artistic talent, but they also design practical things such as buildings or technology!

This article will talk about some examples of how architectural skills go beyond painting pictures and designing cool shapes. These include topics like theoretical foundations, style influence, and technological applications.

History of architecture

Like any other form of art, there are many schools that devote themselves to educating people about architectural styles. Some focus more on specific periods or regions, while others concentrate on just one type such as neoclassicism or gothic. There are even some who have dedicated whole books to different types of buildings!

Architectural style is an effective way to learn something about building structure and decoration. When studying designs from various eras, you will notice similarities in how they use balance, proportion, and symmetry to achieve their look. These proportions can be internal like the ratio of height to width of a room or external like the size of an entranceway or windows.

Balance, proportion, and symmetry can be used to emphasize certain parts of a design, creating a tone or mood for the space. For example, using these principles in a classic white wall would create a calm, peaceful feeling, whereas a dark gray color scheme would emphasize depth and concealment.

Different types of architecture

Structural engineering, urban planning, interior design, graphic design — all these fields are considered part of architectural practice. Each one has their own unique set of rules and regulations to be a practitioner in their field.

However, what they have in common is that they all use concepts from an abstract area called “architecture.” This term can sometimes get lost when talking about different areas of practice.

Architecture is more than just buildings with roofs or spaces you can walk into. It is much larger than that! Architectures include ideas like proportion, color schemes, and motifs. These qualities influence how people feel about a space and how it effects them.

Also referred to as decorative art, this element comes down to personal taste. Some may find strong colors and bold patterns distracting while others may appreciate them. We are influenced by our surroundings so using decorations that match your lifestyle and style is important.

There are many ways to apply decoration to spaces so exploring other parts of the profession is not limited to designing rooms or giving presentations.

Different styles of architecture

how architecture is both science and art

Like any other form of art, there are many different types of architectural style. Some people consider it to be more artistic, while others say that it is science.

However, what makes an architect truly great is their ability to combine both of these elements into one piece. An artist may admire scientific concepts, but not use them in their work, and likewise, someone who studies physics can’t help but evaluate how well or poorly an idea fits with the theory.

An architect must do the same thing. They have to apply theories from mathematics, engineering, and psychology to make buildings that are aesthetically pleasing and efficient.

Organization of architecture

Like anything else, there are theories about how to organize or structure something. For example, there is no clearly correct way to organize music in terms of chords, melodies, rhythm, etc. It really depends on what type of music you like!

The same goes for organizing books – some say alphabetize by author, others say indexable by word, and still more say organized by topic or area.

Architecture is similarly influenced by theory. There are many different schools of thought when it comes to organization, decoration, and overall appearance. Different architects use these concepts in different ways to create their own unique style.

However, one thing that all good architectures have in common is an understanding of basic organizational principles. These include things such as using horizontal and vertical space efficiently, grouping similar objects together, and establishing hierarchy (or order) within spaces and areas. All of these apply not only to buildings but also to landscapes and gardens.

Landscapes with interesting shapes and colors play an important role in giving people joy, so being aware of this effect and incorporating it into your designs is another perk of studying architectural design.

Architectural drawings

As we have seen, architects use drawing as their main tool to communicate their ideas. These designs are often very artistic, incorporating lots of shapes, patterns, colors, and textures.

Many people are drawn to architectural art for its beautiful pictures or inspiring motifs. While this is definitely an important part of what makes a piece attractive, it is not the only thing!

Architecture is also a study of space, proportion, and math, which goes much deeper than just looking at how pretty a building looks.

These concepts apply to your house or apartment interior design layouts, and even to the surrounding area where the building sits. It’ll help you determine everything from whether there’s enough room for a car in the garage to whether that roofline is safe to walk under.

But none of these things matter unless someone can actually look at the architecture and understand why it’s significant — and that’s where most people struggle.

Architectural design

After World War II, many countries were in need of an architectural re-foundation. New nationalistic ideologies flourished as people rebuilt their nations’ identities after the war. With these new beliefs came new concepts for shaping buildings; some called it fascist or Nazi style.

These styles focused heavily on powerful shapes and strong lines, with little to no ornamentation. The famous “bulbous” roof is characteristic of this style. In Germany, they referred to this type of architecture as Rundkreis (ringed) building.

Other classic examples include the skyscraper and the neoclassical structure. Neoclassicism was characterized by large columns and proportionally sized windows and doors. This is seen today in most government offices and museums.

Architecture has always been influenced both scientifically and artistically. These two types of inspiration come from different areas, but both play important roles.

The structure of a building

Like with any other form of art, there are some basic rules that apply to architecture. These include such fundamental concepts as space, proportion, and unity.

In fact, one could say that these three principles are universal design guidelines. That is why it is so interesting to look at how well designers incorporate them into their work.

Space is the area in front of an object or group of objects. Proportion refers to the size relationships between different parts of a given unit. Unity means having similar elements that work together.

These three concepts combine to create harmony. When you feel this sense of calm harmony, it can have a positive influence on your mood. Also, when you are looking at something, you should be able to understand what it represents and where it came from.

This applies not only to buildings but also cars, furniture, and clothes. What I like about this concept is that even if you were never trained in architecture, you would still be able to recognize its importance.

The function of a building

how architecture is both science and art

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, architecture is defined as “the art or science of constructing buildings and designing layouts and plans for construction”. That definition seems pretty clear!

However, you may have noticed that it doesn’t include anything about how important buildings are.

I bet you know what I mean!

You probably think that architects are really creative people who enjoy making beautiful things, but your opinion is not universal. Most people associate beauty with the aesthetics of a structure, like its colors, shapes, and decorations.

But there’s another way to look at it – why most people consider an architect to be more than just someone who designs pretty structures. They believe that architects design functional buildings.

And while this may sound odd, I will explain all the reasons why this perception isn’t quite right.

Let me give you some examples of how even very famous architectural landmarks don’t necessarily meet the criteria for the term ‘functional’.

The Chrysler Building in New York City is considered one of the greatest works of twentieth century architecture, but it wasn’t designed to be practical. It was meant to be stunningly beautiful, and it still is today.

That said, the Chrysler Tower now serves as both a workable office space and a destination site for tourists. But it didn’t always exist as such.
