The look of an area, how buildings are organized, what materials they use, and how well designed spaces contribute to our sense of community is referred to as architectural style.
Styles not only tell us about the people who made them, but also reveal something about the society that formed around them. In fact, some would say that styles influence societal norms and expectations.
Certain styles become popular trends which then get copied and adapted by other architects. Others remain unique and stand out from the crowd – creating a feeling of exclusivity for those who see it.
This article will talk more in depth about five different architectural styles and their relation to socialization. Then, we’ll discuss why these styles are important and how you can identify each one when looking at new sites or buildings.

One of the most well-known styles of building is classical architecture. This style originated in ancient Greece, and quickly spread across Europe and the rest of the world via Rome. Ancient Greeks built their buildings using familiar shapes that they organized into compositions to create beautiful spaces. These compositions were mostly oriented around the sun or the space between two objects.
The Romans took these ideas and incorporated them with their own culture. Buildings would be constructed using vertical lines like columns or walls, horizontal lines such as floors and roofs, and proportionally sized areas for specific functions. The proportions of this design are what gives classic architecture its name — it is characterized by tall, thin structures with lots of decorations.
These designs flourished during the Renaissance period, when Italy became one of the great powers in European society. Artists and engineers adapted the styles of classic architecture to fit within new cultural contexts. For example, architects now use neoclassicism as an influence for modern styles.

During the Middle Ages, architectural styles were very diverse. There was no one style that people seemed to favor over the other ones. Some examples of medieval architectural styles are Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, Chippendale, Art Deco, and Missionary.
Many scholars describe the Romano-Gallic art in Northern Italy as being influenced by Ancient Greece. This is seen through their use of proportion and symmetry, as well as their representation of strong figures. The Romans also built using concrete instead of stone, which allowed for lighter building materials but contributed to heavier buildings.
The Italian Renaissance gave rise to many different styles such as Venetian Gothic, Florentine Renaissance, and Roman Empire. These include structures such as domes, vaults, and arches!
Artists and architects of the time experimented with new shapes and forms to convey messages and inspire emotions. For instance, the pointed arch was used frequently to create an elegant feeling. An example of this can be seen at Grand Central Terminal in New York City, where it lines several walls and ceilings.
Another popular shape during this period was the “T” or trabeate arch, which resembles an inverted letter T. You may have heard this called an egg and dart arch before. This looks like two parallel vertical columns connected by an angled column.

During this period, called the Italian Renaissance or more recently referred to as the Renaissance era, architects built buildings that were no longer modeled after classical Greek and Roman styles but rather their own artistic expression.
The artists of the time experimented with new shapes and forms that are still in use today. They also explored different materials such as stone, bronze and iron instead of only wood like during the Gothic Era.
These changes arose from an emphasis placed on art over religion. Art was seen as a way to connect directly to God making it less about representing his son Jesus and more about expressing your inner self.
Architecture is a form of communication so society places importance on it being effective. The messages architects send about what kind of person they are can influence how people feel about them.
For example, someone who is very religious might be influenced by the church the architect works for and whether it looks beautiful. An atheist may not care about the style unless it has lots of decorations which show off the artist’s talent.
It is important to remember that you should never underestimate the power of design.

During this period, architects would take inspiration from nature to create buildings. Buildings would become more decorated, florid, and show off rich decorations. This style is sometimes called baroque or rococo architectural styles.
In Italy, one of the main countries that had strong baroque influence, the city of Rome was rebuilt in this style after being sacked by the Roman Empire in 1595. The rebuilding process took around two centuries until the early 19th century.
The empire had fallen and the new rulers wanted to establish an Italian kingdom. They needed money to spend on their military campaigns so they taxed Romans heavily for revenue. Many people were resentful of these taxes so some fought back against the government.
Many of the rebels attacked the Vatican with weapons and destroyed parts of it. When the governments troops came to destroy the remaining ruins, they found many skeletons with elaborate jewelry buried with them. These are examples of how the church used decoration and symbolism to inspire awe in its followers.
Another example of baroque art is the work of Leonardo da Vinci. He painted several works such as the Mona Lisa which feature beautiful faces adorned with large rings and earrings.

The term “Rococo” was coined in France during the 18th century to describe an architectural style characterized by whimsical decorations, fluid lines, and elaborate motifs. These characteristics are most visible in buildings with very tall roofs that taper off towards the top.
The word “rococo” comes from the French rocaille, which means “noisy chaos.” This refers to how some of the patterns look, such as leaves or flowers being mixed together without any organization.
This particular decoration style became popular throughout Europe at this time due to its uniqueness. Many architects who practiced this style included themselves within the art world, making it recognizable beyond just your average person.
In addition to having beautiful designs, many of these buildings made people feel happy while looking at them. This feeling is called uplift, and it makes you want to be around the building or person. Some examples of buildings with this style are Buckingham Palace in London, Versailles in France, and the Louvre in Paris.

One of the most well known styles of architectural design is neo-classicism, or sometimes referred to as classicism. This style originated in Greece around 500 BCE and was later adapted by several other cultures.
Neo-classicists typically use large columns and arches with proportionately larger spaces between them to create an impressive sense of harmony. The proportions are usually very strict, which makes this style feel formal and deliberate.
This consistency is what gives neo-classic buildings their strong appeal. They are also said to promote calm, tranquility, and relaxation. When you look at a lot of neo-classic buildings, you get the same feeling.
The pillars that hold up the roof seem like they will remain there forever, supporting the space above. An arch similarly creates a sense of security because it looks like even though something might fall, it can’t.
There are many different versions of neo-classic, but some common features include Roman temples and Greek structures. These similarities make it easy to recognize when one is looking at neo-classic designs.

Contemporary or modern architectural styles emerged in the twentieth century. They are characterized by their clean lines, complex geometries, and emphasis on functionality over decoration.
Modern architects often use industrial materials like steel or plastic to create buildings that seem very efficient and functional. Materials such as glass emphasize natural light, while black mirrors reflect it back inside.
The popularity of this style is clearly seen in the growth of skyscraper construction. Skyscrapers have increasingly large roofs which allow for more sunlight to enter and be reflected up towards the sky.
There are also many examples of famous structures designed in a modern style, including the Chrysler Building, The Empire State Buildings, and the Sydney Opera House. All three of these buildings are well known for their sleek design and impressive structure.
Another feature common to most modern architectures is their avoidance of proportionality. Proportion refers to the relationship between shapes of an object-for example, how wide an object is compared to its height. An object with proportions uses repeated patterns of shape and size to emphasize vertical or horizontal balance.
This lack of balance can become quite uncomfortable to look at. Some say that looking at too much proportion takes away from the beauty of the form.
Given all this, it’s not surprising that many people consider modern designs to be boring, sterile, and empty. Critics argue that there is little emotion, depth, or sense of spirituality in works created under this category.

There are many popular architectural styles that have become recognizable signatures of certain periods in history and geographical locations. These styles are not only attractive to look at, but also influence people’s perceptions of both space and time.
Many consider the neoclassical style to be one of the most beautiful architectures ever constructed. It was first coined in France during the late 18th century.
The Neoclassicists believed that beauty could be achieved by creating simple forms with strong vertical and horizontal lines and proportioned shapes. They also emphasized harmony and unity through similar colors and materials.
Neo-classicism quickly became very fashionable throughout Europe and North America. Many famous buildings such as The Louvre, the United States Congress, and the White House were all designed in this style.
Another well known classical style is called Romanesque. This style originated in Northern Italy around the 9th or 10th centuries and is characterized by heavy stone arches, rounded corners, and thick walls.
Some say it resembles an elephant because of its sturdy shape. Although no longer in fashion, you can still find examples of Romaneck architecture across the world. For instance, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Peters Church in Chicago, and the Vatican City are some well-known structures built using this style.
