How Architecture Started

Looking back, it is clear that architecture has played an integral part in humanity’s development as a species. The first buildings were probably made out of stones or timber, but we know from historical accounts that some early architects were truly gifted with their skills.

Architecture was highly regarded during ancient times. Many great empires had professional architectural practices that built beautiful structures using advanced design techniques. Some even credited these masters with helping to save their empire by introducing new styles into building construction.

It is hard to imagine today, but before the Industrial Revolution there wasn’t too much of a need for large-scale infrastructure like power plants and factories. Technology at this time was mostly limited to tools and weapons, so designing efficient power generation systems didn’t really make sense.

But as population grew and economies expanded, more energy needed to be produced, distributed, and consumed. This led to the creation of powerful institutions devoted to the production and distribution of energy. These include things like hydroelectric dams, nuclear reactors, and fossil fuel refineries.

Modern skyscrapers are powered by electricity, which makes them very stable sources of energy. Having an architect on staff can help prevent disasters such as fires or explosions, since they have special training in fire safety codes.

These days most people don’t spend all day sitting down, so spaces where people gather and work require adequate circulation and waiting areas to facilitate activity.

The Greek philosophers

how architecture started

Many of you may not know this, but architectural design has its roots in ancient Greece! Before there were buildings with roofs, walls, and floors, there were only open spaces to structure what was put inside them-think squares and pyramids.

Architecture comes from the word archi-, which means builder or architect. Then, the Greeks took away the need for having separate rooms and ceilings by using their own unique style of architecture.

They would use large openings between two parts of the building as vertical elements that create a ceiling. They also used columns and other shapes to give the space more importance. These are some key components of classic architecture.

Classic styles like Neoclassical and Renaissance depend heavily on these concepts.

The Roman architects

how architecture started

During Rome’s golden age, from 250 to 150 BC, she had an art form that would come to define her as a nation — architecture.

Her architects were more than just builders; they designed entire cities! And their designs influenced later generations of architects around the world.

The reason for this is simple: great architects design beautiful buildings. Buildings are what people associate with a country’t identity.

Many aspects about a culture can be determined by how well known and recognizable its buildings are. For example, Japan’s famous aesthetic features large windows and lush greenery all over. This style was heavily inspired by Japanese temples.

Another popular style is Neoclassicism, which uses classical elements such as columns and roofs in building layouts. Many countries use this style as the basis for their federal government offices and landmarks like the United States Capitol or the Reichstag in Berlin.

So why don’t we learn how to do these things? It’s because most people don’t have access to professional skills in architectural drawing and designing.

Fortunately, you no longer need to be professionally trained to create your own unique styles! There are many free software programs that allow you to experiment and improve your artistic abilities.

Here are some easy ways to start creating your own unique architectural styles.

The Islamic scholars

how architecture started

Like many other fields, architecture began with people who were passionate about it. People are drawn to buildings because they contain important information that describe how things work.

Architecture is also an outlet for creativity. Architects use mathematics and psychology in their designs to achieve a desired result.

This article will talk more in depth about one of the key players behind architectural theory – the Muslim scholars. We’ll look at some of their defining concepts like riyāḍ (theology), ḥujja (gate or entrance) and ṣalūb (exit).

Then, we’ll discuss what makes someone qualified as an architect. What qualities do you need to succeed in this field?

Last but not least, we’ll take a look at some famous architects and see where they got their start.

The European Renaissance

how architecture started

During this period, Europe experienced an unprecedented rebirth in art, architecture, science, and technology. This renaissance was fueled by new discoveries that gave rise to progressive creations. For example, during the Italian Renaissance, architects designed beautiful buildings using classical styles.

Classical styles are characterized by orders or arrangements of columns, pilasters, and other vertical elements with horizontal motifs such as entablatures and friezes. These designs were later adapted and incorporated into Baroque style architecture and Neoclassicism, which we still see present in many architectural shapes today.

The Gothic style originated around the year 1000 and is distinguished by its use of pointed arches and vaults. It influenced Romanesque and Islamic design modes and can be seen in some contemporary skyscrapers.

During the Enlightenment era, philosophers developed the concept of human nature, emphasizing natural tendencies towards moral good behavior. They also proposed objective truth independent of religious authority, paving way for the scientific revolution we know about now.

All these concepts played a significant part in the development of the modern era, so it’s no surprise that they left their mark on architectural styles.

The English Civil War

how architecture started

During the Renaissance, large cities with vast wealth began to emerge in Europe. This was due to two main reasons: trade and architecture. Trade flourished as more people had money to spend so there were always new things to buy. Businessmen built bigger and better warehouses for their goods so they could be stored and organized efficiently.

Architecture received a major boost during this time period. Wealthy individuals spent lavishly on decorations and symbolism to show how important they thought themselves to be. These decorations included rich materials such as marble or bronze, elaborate carving and decoration, and large windows to let in light and display the interior’s beautiful decorations.

During the English civil war, Parliament decided that King Charles I needed to make changes to his religious policies. He refused, leading to an uprising of citizens against him. Many buildings were destroyed during this time because soldiers would take anything valuable they found. Others were burnt down by protesters.

None of these events really affected the architectural style of London until many years later when the city grew larger and its population exploded. At that time, architects incorporated neoclassical styles into the construction of newer buildings.

The French Revolution

During this period, there was an increase in political unrest due to the ever-rising power of the monarchy. All too often, the monarch would make decisions that were not popular with the people.

In addition to his personal quirks, such as keeping a large number of servants even after his wife’s death, he also made unpopular choices.

He sometimes spent lavishly on expensive building projects instead of investing in the country’s infrastructure or developing new technologies. At times, these expenditures benefited only a few individuals, while most others struggled to afford food and shelter.

During this time, many European countries underwent a process known as Enclosure. Land beyond towns and villages was increasingly appropriated for construction and business ventures. This took place largely because landowners could no longer earn enough income off their land to survive, so they sold it and invested the money in more profitable endeavors.

It is important to note that although some nobles enjoyed this development, most working class people did not. They were displaced from their homes when rich landowners built mansions next door, making space for larger gardens and stable facilities.

Another significant cause of urban overcrowding during this era was warfare. As cities grew denser, transportation became limited. People were forced into closer quarters, which led to disease spread and violence.

Architecture played a crucial role in determining how crowded or open a city will be.

The Industrial Revolution

how architecture started

During this era, we would later refer to as the Enlightenment or Scientific Revolution, technology was mostly focused in two areas: manufacturing and warfare. Technology played an important role in creating the very first factories, which are still used today.

These early factories employed what is now referred to as the assembly line process. An assembly line is where one worker or group of workers produces several similar products at a steady pace.

A well-known company that uses this concept quite heavily is Toyota. Their cars are made up of many individual parts that are all put together with precision by other people. This way, they do not need to give much attention to each part individually, only knowing how to put it altogether.

The second area in which technology had a significant impact was weaponry. As mentioned earlier, technology allowed for more efficient production of weapons, making them sharper and better designed. Some experts say that these changes were what gave us the modern day weapon – the gun!

Since guns use pressure to shoot projectiles, engineers have to make sure that the barrel does not collapse under pressure. They also have to make certain that there is enough oxygen circulating so that the projectile will burn properly.

Another aspect of this is called gas regulation, where appropriate amounts of gases enter the chamber and exit the barrel at the right times.

The Art Nouveau movement

how architecture started

During this period, there was an explosion of creativity across many disciplines- including architecture. This is called the Art Nouveau or Decorated Style. People created elaborate buildings and decorations that were rich in symbolism and pattern. These patterns could be natural like plants and flowers, geometric, or stylized.

The most famous example of art nouveau style is probably the Parisian apartment building designed by Hector Guimard. It features large windows with heavy curtains which can be drawn to create privacy or opened up to let light pour into the space.

This style influenced other areas of design. For instance, the rounded curves used in Art Nouveau furniture look very similar to those seen in Japanese aesthetics.

Art Nouveau lasted only five years before giving way to another style.
