How Did Architecture Begin

When humans first began to inhabit caves, they lived in small groups of one or two individuals. As time passed, these people realized there was an empty space next to them and another person nearby.

These two people formed a bond and learned how to cooperate with each other to survive. This is what gave rise to family units, which eventually evolved into tribes where entire villages worked together for survival.

As humanity progressed beyond their early tribal state, architects were some of the most important figures. They designed buildings that helped give birth to cities!

The earliest civilizations ruled over vast areas and were made up mostly of royal families. These rulers needed places to live, work, and have ceremonial gatherings.

Architects built these structures by taking inspiration from nature. Plants grow towards the sun so they became vertical sources of light and air. Trees also develop thick skin to protect themselves and the surroundings around them.

At this stage, no one knew how to use advanced building materials like concrete or steel, but builders were still able to create majestic architectures using natural resources. Ancient cultures had incredible talent and will to inspire others.

That’s why we have statues and paintings depicting powerful leaders and goddesses who inspired awe. People are drawn to such images because they want to feel strong, intelligent, and beautiful like those depicted.

Introduction

This article will talk about how architecture started and how it influenced the development of civilization as we know it today.

The earliest structures were simple

There are indications that humans spent their time gathering food, protecting themselves from other hunters or wild animals, constructing tools and weapons, and creating shelter to do so in early human history.

These basic activities require space, which makes sense since our distant ancestors needed somewhere to live and protect themselves. When we look at the archaeological record, we find that some of these pre-historic people lived in groups in small areas with little decoration.

Architecture didn’t emerge until much later, when more advanced civilizations emerged and complex societies arose. We can link this shift to an increase in population and trade as well as political power.

With enough resources, there’s an incentive to design beautiful buildings and palaces. Wealthy individuals wanted to show off their wealth by having impressive houses, and powerful rulers wanted to project an aura of strength.

This is what gave rise to architecture! It's interesting to note how most ancient cultures categorized spaces differently. For example, they would group living quarters together and separate religious sites such as temples from private dwellings.

That way, everyone had their own area and was not threatened by anyone else’s space. Political leaders could use architectural aesthetics to differentiate between themselves and others. This created a form of separation through opulence.

The Egyptians built their first pyramids

During ancient times, the most powerful people in Egypt were not wealthy merchants or even kings — they were architects! These architects designed buildings and constructed them using advanced construction techniques. They also designed elaborate tombs for themselves where they could be buried along with all of their resources.

Architecture is more than just building something that looks beautiful; it is a way to express yourself, your culture, and how you want to be remembered. It is also a form of art.

The Ancient Egyptian civilization was one of the earliest civilizations in the world. They lived around the Nile River Valley from about 5000 BC to AD 1000. Their architectural style influenced later cultures such as those in Greece and Rome.

Pyramids are an example of an architect’s work. Pyramids were large structures used to house either dead rulers or treasures. There are many different types of pyramid, but all have a pointed top and a flat base. This shape is unique and special because it creates a space between the top and the ground.

This effect helps make the structure lighter and easier to climb, which is important since there are often no engines or mechanical parts involved. You can look up pictures of the Great Pyramid of Giza online to get some ideas before you begin building yours.

The Greeks built their first temples

Before there were buildings, there was worship. Early people gathered in sacred spaces to ask for help or guidance from either a deity or spirit. Ancient cultures erected large structures to house this ritualistic activity-their most famous being the temple.

The word “temple” comes from the Greek term temenos, which means “sacred enclosure.” These enclosures took many forms depending on what culture they belonged to. For instance, some would construct an area of land with statues of their gods as decorations while others would build a structure connected to the ground that only certain people could enter.

Architecture is the art of designing these spacey monuments so that otherworldly energy can be channeled into them. This seems like a crazy idea, but it’s true! People have used architecture to connect to spirituality since ancient times.

Ancient architects designed not just temples, but also homes, warehouses, and even public works such as theaters and arenas. Some believe that early humans relied more on instinct when creating these spatial designs, but as civilization advanced, intelligent design became common.

After Christianity emerged as one of the major religions in the Roman Empire, churches began popping up all over Europe. Since Christians believed that Jesus will return at any time, he needed a place to meet and talk about his next mission, so church buildings were born.

These meeting places inspired other religious groups to do the same.

The Romans built their first buildings

During the Roman Empire, there were two main architects that designed and constructed new structures. These men played an integral part in shaping not only Rome’s architecture, but also the way people build today.

The more famous of the two was Marcus Veliaeius Asellio who is known for his use of complex geometrical shapes in his designs. He would create buildings with rounded roofs and tall towers by using lots of lines and planes.

His most well-known work includes the Temple to Jupiter at Capitoline Hill and the Curia or Senate House which still stands over 2 kilometers away. Both are very impressive feats considering they were completed during the reign of Augustus Caesar.

However, it was Asellio’s simpler works like baths and theaters that truly showcase his talent. They show how he adapted his style depending on what materials were available and if the space allowed for expensive decorations.

This isn’t too hard to do when you know your basics of geometry! So, why don’t you give one of these a try? Take some time to learn basic forms before moving onto harder ones. You can find many free resources online and in books.

The Middle Ages saw great architectural development

During this time, architecture flourished in many different cultures across Europe. Buildings were constructed using simple construction techniques and advanced mathematics to create beautiful structures.

Many of these buildings remain today and are considered masterpieces. They include churches, castles, squares, and theaters — all made with perfect geometric forms and proportioning.

These types of buildings influenced later architects through their use of geometry and proportions. For example, the famous Gothic style is characterized by tall spires that get thinner as they go up. This mimics the way light bounces off solid objects and fades away.

Another important design element comes from looking at how heavy stones fit within walls or roofs. If you look close enough, you can find patterns and shapes hidden between them.

Architects have continued to admire the work of the early builders ever since then.

The Renaissance

During this time, buildings began to look more like each other than anything else. They resembled each other in their use of proportion, decoration, and style. Buildings also started to have more elaborate decorations and sculpture. This is what we now call the Renaissance era.

The Renaissance lasted from about 1400 to 1600. It was during this period that many great architects first took inspiration from nature and then built upon those designs.

Architects would take ideas from plants or animals and apply them to human design. For instance, they might admire how birds flaunt their beautiful feathers so others can see them. Or maybe they’ll notice how cats crouch low and lean forward when stalking prey.

These concepts were incorporated into building shapes and styles. Some examples are the pyramidal roofs, bulbous curves, and sloping sides used in Gothic architecture.

Another important concept introduced during the Renaissance is the use of classical proportions. Proportion means choosing which elements in a picture or object are sized up or down relative to one another.

For example, if you had two squares with different sizes of spaces between them, the square with the bigger space between it and its neighbor is an example of proportion. In order to achieve proportion, there needs to be a relationship between the parts. Here, the size of the empty area is related to the whole square.

This effect creates a sense of balance and harmony among all the components.

The Baroque

During this period, architects began to experiment with new styles and concepts that would later be categorized as baroque. These include rich decorations, elaborate sculpture and painting, and dramatic use of light and space.

The term “baroque” was first used in France during the mid-17th century to describe paintings or sculptures which were overblown with decorative touches. This style quickly caught on across Europe, and is now considered one of humanity’s greatest artistic expressions.

Many aspects of modern architecture can be traced back to the baroque era, including rounded arches, tall ceilings, and marble columns and foyers. Some even believe that baroque shapes such as triangles and squares influence our current design sensibilities.

But you probably know this already – it’s those beautiful Italian villas! And Dutch windmills! And French chateaus and temples! All great examples of architectural baroque.

The Classical

how did architecture begin

In classical architecture, architects create spaces or buildings that are modeled after natural environments such as jungles, deserts, mountains, or oceans. Spaces within these settings have shapes and structures determined by their surroundings. For example, an outdoor pool would be shaped differently than an indoor swimming pool due to the different geometries of land versus water.

The reason why this is important for architectural design is because everything in our built environment is influenced by nature – even the way we organize space is rooted in ecological concepts.

Architects use spatial organization to emphasize specific qualities about a given space. A good example is using parallel lines to make a room feel closed off and separate. Using vertical lines creates a sense of depth and emphasis on the higher floor level you are looking at.

These similarities between natural environments and analogues in human habitats underscore the importance of ecology in shaping how humans live. Natural ecosystems help us understand what types of spaces work well for limiting competition and encouraging cooperation.

Architecture can still incorporate other styles, but designing according to ecological principles should be a fundamental part of every project.
