How Does Von Neumann Architecture Work

In computer architecture, we talk about how computers work in terms of two main components: hardware and software. The term “hardware” refers to what actually does the computing (the processors, memory chips, etc.), while the “software” is what programs run on the computer system.

Computer engineers develop both types of components so that they are as efficient at processing information as possible, thus maximizing the potential speed of your computer.

Von Neumann architectures are one such way that software and hardware interact with each other. This type of organization was first described by Konrad von Neuman back in 1945! He called it the “von Neumann hierarchy,” which means his design is sometimes referred to as a “Neumann-hierarchical” or just plain “Hierarchical” design. It has since become the most common organizational structure for modern day CPU designs.

The CPU

All computer processors work in fundamentally the same way- by executing programs or tasks given to it through an operating system (OS). A processor is designed with special circuitry that helps it quickly execute small pieces of software, known as instructions.

In fact, most components inside a modern day computer are actually very complicated math functions or digital logic circuits that help process information. Modern CPUs have so many features beyond this basic instruction processing though, like powerful graphics or video cards, that we rarely mention how they work under the hood.

Von Neumann architecture was one of the earliest architectures used for computers. It gives each part of the chip specific jobs to do, creating what we call “parallelism”– where different parts can accomplish separate things while still working together.

This parallelization is why you will typically hear people say that computers get twice as fast every two years! Because GPUs and other chips become faster over time, manufacturers make newer chips using the same von Neumann design but improved upon.

CPUs remain mostly unchanged since their inception in 1965, however. This is because software has not evolved enough to take advantage of all the possibilities these more advanced versions could offer.

The memory

Memory is what computer software and programs use to store information. There are two main types of memories in computers-volatile (or dynamic) and non-volatile (or persistent).

Volatile memories will lose their data if power is lost, which means that mobile or desktop computers typically have volatile memories like RAM (random access memory). Many people know PCs as having “battery powered” RAM because batteries can last for a long time so most of the time there is enough energy to keep working.

Non-volatile memories do not need external power to work, but they are much more expensive than regular ones. This is why almost all modern day cell phones and other large scale computing devices have at least one flash drive or hard disk drive (HDD)– they are very cost effective unless something goes wrong!

Von Neumann architecture uses both volatile and non-volatile memories in its design.

The hard drive

Hard drives are what store all of your computer data. They're usually very thin, with wires running out from the back to connect them together.

Computer files such as pictures, documents, and videos are stored in a folder structure on the hard disk. When you want to access these files, a program or software application is used to do it. For example, Microsoft Office has an app called File Explorer that allows you to access and organize your files easily.

Hard disks come in different sizes, but the most common size is 2TB (terabytes) which can hold around 20 million songs or about 500 movies.

The GPU

Graphics processing units (or GPUs) have become very popular in recent years. A GPU is typically much faster than an integrated CPU chip, which means it can be used to do more tasks.

GPUs work by using parallel computing. This means there are separate components that perform different functions of a task, and they all work together to complete the job!

For instance, when you watch a video or play a game, your GPU uses computer graphics algorithms and technology to process what and who you are looking at, how fast things are moving, etc.

There are three major parts of a GPU. They are the memory controller, the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), and the output transistors.

The memory controller controls which areas of the GPU have access to certain types of data. It also manages which type of data goes into the ALU and where it gets sent after being processed.

The ALU performs mathematical calculations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. After doing so, it determines whether something happens (for example, if two numbers are equal, another number pops out!)

After this, the ALU sends information to the output transistor stage, which switches things on and off to create the desired result.

The motherboard

A motherboard is the central component of any computer. This does not just refer to your typical Intel or AMD processor chip, but anything that controls the other parts of the computer. These can be graphics cards, CPUs, RAM, wired/wireless network adapters, and more!

A motherboard usually has an internal circuit board, along with various connectors for attaching additional components. By having many different types of connections, it is possible to connect almost every part of the computer to each other.

This way you do not have to buy separate cables for all of these devices, which cost money! Another benefit is being able to easily move one part of the computer without needing to disconnect everything first.

There are several companies that make motherboards, so it is impossible to tell if one is better than another unless they directly compete with each other. However, we can talk about how some work differently from others.

The NIC

One of the most fundamental parts of any computer network is what is referred to as a Network Interface Card (or NIC for short). A NIC works by receiving electrical signals from an external source, translating that signal into something computers can understand, and then converting it back into a second external source.

Most personal computers have at least one internal or onboard NIC in their motherboard. This onboard NIC is usually shared via a cable connection with another device or computer so they can communicate with each other. Some newer laptops also have two separate onboard NICS which allow them to connect directly to different networks or devices.

A NIC will always look like a small piece of hardware attached to your computer’s USB port or Ethernet port. But under the hood, it will contain additional components suchas RJ-45 connectorsfor wired connections, and software for translating the information sent over the wire.-[Link]

The settings on a NIC are typically very specific. You may be able to change the IP address, DNS addresses, and/or netmask of the card, but not the router or ISP that it connects to! That is up to them and how they want the card to work.

Usually, changing these settings requires you to use a web browser to access some sort of configuration page provided by the manufacturer.

The USB

What is the Universal Serial Bus (USB)? Simply put, the USB is a standard interface for connecting various peripherals to your computer. It was designed so that any manufacturer could create an interchangeable peripheral device using the USB technology.

The USB has two main features: connection and use of power. When you connect a new USB device to your computer, it usually uses a few minutes to establish a link with other software or the operating system. This process is called “device initialization”or sometimes just initializing the device.

After this initial setup, you can start using the device immediately! That is what makes the USB such an efficient technology – it does not require extended pre-downloading or configuration processes before users can enjoy their devices.

The USB also provides enough current to operate properly which helps mitigate issues related to low battery life. Because of these benefits, most modern day computers have at least one USB port. Most laptops now even rely on the USB exclusively for connectivity.

The power supply

how does von neumann architecture work

Power supplies are what keep your computer running! They take energy sources, in this case electricity, transform that energy into other energies used for functioning of the computer, and then get rid of these new energies to store them somewhere.

The way most people think about power supplies is that they are just a bunch of wires coming out of a source, connected to another set of wires that go towards where things need electrical energy.

But there’s more to it than that! A powerful theory in information technology is known as von Neuman architecture or VNA.

Von Neumann architecture applies not only to power supplies but also CPU (central processing units) chips and even whole computers.
