Over the past few years, computer architecture has become increasingly complex. As technology continues to evolve at an incredible rate, engineers must be aware of all aspects of computer science, including microprocessors, memory, caches, bandwidth, and more.
Computer architects are tasked with making sure that these components work together efficiently to deliver fast performance. They also have to make sure that there is enough physical space for everything!
Architects’ jobs can get pretty complicated as technologies continue to advance every year. That’s why it is so important to have a basic understanding of how computers function.
You will find that most entry level positions require only a general knowledge of computer hardware, which makes sense because people who hold higher levels of education in engineering or other fields usually already know this information.
However, advanced opportunities do exist, especially if you are looking to move up the ladder. In fact, some companies even advertise job openings for experienced professionals with little-to-no technical background.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, as many top position holders didn’t start out knowing much about software either. By having a fundamental grasp of both areas, you will still succeed where others don’t due to your talent and skill set.
Hardware isn’t always easy to understand, but when you look beyond the surface effects it’s possible to identify some patterns and concepts that apply to all processors.

Computers work by executing programs or sequences of instructions. These programs are made up of individual pieces called bits, which can have different functions depending on what program you want to run them in.
The way these bits are organized makes it possible to perform very complicated things!
Computer architectures organize these bits in different ways to make this process easier. There are eight major architectural styles: von Neumann, Harvard, pipelined, parallel, RISC, register-based, out-of-order.
Each architecture has their strengths that help make computers more efficient at performing specific tasks. Architectural styles are not universal best practices like they once were — every computer architect now tends to use one over another!
That is why it is so hard to say what is the “right” architecture for your particular task. But there are some overarching rules about which style is most appropriate depending on what kind of software you will be creating.
This article will go into more detail about each type of architecture and how well they fit certain types of applications.

So what is hardware? That’s a good question! Technically, everything that makes up a computer is considered to be part of its “hardware.”
The CPU, RAM, GPU, and other components all fit into this category. Everything else is considered to be software or firmware.
Software includes things like operating systems, apps, and widgets (like Google Maps) that people use to perform tasks on the computer. This also includes third party tools such as Photoshop or Excel.
Firmwares include things like Intel ME which are usually not user-facing but still important for how your computer functions.
So why do we care about hardware then? Because it’s the engine that powers our computers! As you might have guessed, engineers spend a lot of time figuring out efficient ways to organize and implement these engines in order to maximize performance.
This is called engineering computer architecture (ECA)! Or more specifically, it’s studying how different parts of a computer work together to create faster programs.
Computer architects design CPUs, GPUs, and other components so that they can quickly carry out very specific calculations or sequences of actions.

Another way to organize how computers work is by looking at the organization of the various components that make up a computer. This is called an architecture.
Computer architectures come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have something in common: they are used to separate what parts of the computer do.
In fact, it’s very likely that your own computer has an internal structure like this one.
When you use a computer, you send signals through these different structures to perform tasks. For instance, when you type a word onto Google or check your email with Gmail, your browser sends a signal to search engines and servers to ask them to find information about the word you typed.
By designing our computer architectures to be as efficient as possible, we can improve the speed at which a computer will operate!
But how does it benefit us? As mentioned before, software takes advantage of computer hardware so users experience better performance when the two are working together efficiently.
So now that you know some basics about computer architectures, let’s look at three important ones: Von Neumann, von Neumann-style caches, and Harvard style caches.

Computers are very clever, but sometimes people get tired of them! Technically-speaking, computers do some pretty amazing things, like solving complex equations or playing games, but these functions require a lot of components to work together.
Computer architects help make sure that this happens by defining what part of the computer does what. They also create software programs to tell your computer how to use those components efficiently.
Architects are not only important for creating efficient computers, they are needed in any field where technology is used. For example, an architect helps design buildings, so most of you have probably worked with one before.

What makes an architecture special is how it is structured to handle information flow and computations. These are referred to as computer architectures.
There are three major categories of architectural styles. The most common one is called von Neumann, after its inventor John Von Neumann. This category works by having separate processors that share memory.
A second popular style is known as Harvard architecture, so named for where the processor sits in relation to the shared main memory. A third, less-popular type is called Stanford architecture, due to its shape.
This article will focus mostly on von Neumann architectures because they are the most widely used and understood. That being said, however, understanding other styles can help you understand more about computers!
Computer architects use these basic concepts to create new designs. For instance, the MIT AI Lab uses a von Neumann architecture with lots of parallel processing. Google’s neural network software runs through many different algorithms on their own internal hardware designed using von Neumann concepts.

The more advanced you get with computers, the harder it becomes to stay objective about what is good and bad software architectural design. Software architects are in a very competitive field where every company wants their architect to promote their product’s use of certain tools and technology.
Software engineers want to know why an architect doesn’t use their tool for usability or why he or she uses something that takes longer than needed to complete one task. It can be hard to defend your decisions when there is so much pressure to choose products that appeal to people who use the software.
There are many ways to improve computer architecture. This article will go over some strategies to help you keep your perspective while improving the way you develop applications. These strategies include learning about computer science, mathematics, economics, and psychology.
Computer scientists study how programs work by looking at the instructions on each side of a computer program. Mathematics helps us understand numbers and logic, economics teaches us about money, and psychology looks at human behavior. All of these apply to developing software architectures.

As we have seen, computer architecture is important because it determines how fast your computer will run its most essential functions-like performing mathematical calculations or storing information in memory-but it also plays an integral part in improving the overall performance of software.
Software engineers are constantly looking into ways to make their programs faster by optimizing various aspects of the software or the hardware itself. These optimizations can be done at any stage of development, from writing code to compiling it down to hardware.
There are many different types of architectural improvements that can be made, and they’re not all necessarily expensive.

As we have discussed before, being a good developer does not automatically make you a great one. Being able to code is only half of the equation!
Having deep knowledge about computer architecture isn’t enough to truly be considered an expert. You must also be able to apply that knowledge in ways that are meaningful to you.
For example, someone who knows very well how CPUs work will probably never create a smart robot because they assume that robots already have sensors and processors built into them.
Instead, they would design some kind of sensor for the robot that it could attach to another device or use its own processor to process what it senses.
This way, the robot wouldn’t need CPU instructions set aside just to tell it to do something it has already done once upon a time.
The same goes for software engineers. If they spend all their time designing clever algorithms that rely heavily on advanced mathematics then maybe they will see their pay rise slightly but they won’t get many kudos beyond that.
People with such strong math backgrounds often get pigeon-holed as “math people” which can sometimes hurt their career progression.
Being a good architect doesn’t necessarily mean developing cool gadgets or doing mathematical studies anymore. It means creating programs that work the way your audience expects them to.
