How Has Architecture Changed Over Time

Looking back at history, we can see that architecture has changed quite a bit over the years. Some styles are more elegant than others, but all have their beautiful features that make it stand out. These beautiful traits usually come down to what style of building they represent and how well they express the space or idea the architect was trying to convey.

Architecture is always changing and evolving. New technologies emerge that inspire new ways to design buildings, as well as new types of structures such as floating piers or towers. Buildings designed using these newer techniques add interesting detail to the structure and decoration of the façade.

The way people live changes along with technology, so architects must find new ways to address this by designing homes and workplaces that are efficient in use of space and energy-efficient. Many modern day offices still rely heavily on windows for natural light, for example.

This article will go into some depth about different architectural eras and trends to get a better understanding of how current styles came to be.

The Roman Empire

During the time of the Romans, architecture flourished in many different ways. They built large arenas to host gladiator games, theaters for spectacles such as comedies or tragedies, monuments dedicated to their gods, baths where people could go to wash themselves, and colonnades — long rows of columns that surrounded buildings like so many veins surround your body.

The Romans also designed roads that connected important cities, which now we know as highways. And they invented the arch, an architectural style still used today.

These styles were all influenced by the Greeks, who lived across Europe and Asia Minor before the Romans took over. Ancient Greece was home to some of the world’s first architects, thinkers who designed beautiful temples, palaces, and homes.

However, it was the Romans who integrated these styles into one powerful concept – the way a house should be organized is very much dependent upon how wealthy its owner is.

As you can probably tell, the rich live in big houses with lots of space around them.

The Renaissance

During this period, people began to feel that architecture should be more than just serving practical functions. Architects became artists who were creative in their designs. They expressed themselves through shapes, colors, materials, and spatial arrangements.

Architecture shifted away from being an economical use of space to become something much deeper. This is what made the Renaissance so influential.

The Renaissance was a time when most countries experienced an upswing in prosperity. Technological advances allowed for impressive growth throughout Europe. Artists and architects had new resources they could use to express themselves.

They experimented with different styles and concepts to convey messages and ideas about life. These themes included nature, religion, politics, and even social issues like gender equality.

Overall, the design style during this era emphasized natural beauty and harmony. Buildings resembled structures such as plants or flowers, and everything else fit into it beautifully.

This influence can still be seen today. Many buildings look similar to each other, creating a sense of continuity. Also, many architectural features are reminiscent of the flowering plant kingdom. For example, roofs resemble leaves, towers mimic branches, etc.

After the Renaissance, modern day skyscrapers emerged. While some may consider them ugly now, others considered them inspiring! Architectural forms have always been around, but it was only after the Renaissance that they were appreciated again.

The Industrial Revolution

During this period, people began to realize that you could make large-scale products by using repeated processes. By creating an assembly line style of production, you can produce vast amounts of merchandise quickly and efficiently.

By introducing mass manufacturing, we now have the ability to create almost anything we want! This is why most things in our society are manufactured and not handmade anymore.

Architecture experienced a huge boom during this time as well. People built tall skyscrapers out of steel and glass because it was possible to do so, and doing so guaranteed profits for business owners.

The tallest building ever completed is currently the Shanghai Tower at 532 meters (1,716 feet) – just under half way to being 2 kilometers (1 mile) high! It took over 20 years to complete but it is still standing today.

Skyscraper design also evolved dramatically. Architects experimented with different shapes and sizes to see what would work best.

The French Revolution

During this period, people became extremely passionate about changing what they perceived to be wrong with society. This passion for change manifested in many different ways, including through revolutionary architecture.

During the French Enlightenment, architects such as Claude-Nicolas Ledoux advocated for using nature as a source of inspiration and purification. His concept was called enamelling, which is taking natural materials and coating them, sometimes completely covering them, with another material.

This analogy of painting with metals inspired his use of straight lines and flat planes that create space within the building. He also used proportion and symmetry to emphasize unity and consistency. These concepts are still seen today in modern buildings.

Another architect during this time was Jacques-Marie Daubencron, who designed the Panthéon in Paris. Here, he integrated beautiful wrought iron into the structure. It gives the setting an elegant feel while emphasizing strength at the same time.

These two examples show how incorporating beautifully crafted materials can give your home or workplace a feeling of prestige.

The Modernist movement

During this period, architects would devote themselves to studying classical architecture — the Romans, Greeks, and Ancient Egyptians. They also studied natural forms such as plants and animals and how they are organized into systems, like flowers or trees.

These studies inspired their designs that were very systematic and logical, resembling structures of nature. Some examples of this include the geometrical shapes used in skyscrapers or the way homes resemble houses.

The modernists believed that beauty was found in harmony and unity between form and function. For them, functionality was the defining element of true design. In fact, some buildings designed during this time have become synonymous with “functional” because they feature lots of glass, steel, or concrete.

Many people consider the International Style – which includes everything from Frank Lloyd Wright to Le Corbusier to Antoni Gaudí – to be one of the most beautiful styles of all time. It is clear that these artists loved nature and wanted to imitate it by creating beautifully structured spaces.

The Space Race

During the Cold War, one nation wanted to prove that it was better than the other team. This national competition inspired massive changes in how we build buildings. Some of these changes are subtle, but all have one thing in common – space!

Architects needed more space for their offices, meeting rooms, and studios. They also required larger homes for themselves and their families. More spacious apartments and houses allowed people to feel comfortable when visiting or living there, making them want to be a part of the community longer.

The space race is still happening today, except this time it’s online instead of offline. Technology companies strive to provide enough room so employees can work efficiently without being crowded.

There are many reasons why having lots of space is important. As mentioned before, office spaces need room for desks, conference tables, and private bathrooms. Apartment and house sizes influence how much land you have per person.

Also, large spaces help create communities. People who live near each other spend time together and do things as a group.

The Digital Revolution

Recent architectural developments are often referred to as digital or technology-based, due to their use of advanced technologies such as computers and software. These new styles seem to be inspired by concepts that have been around for some time, however, they are usually implemented in ways that we could not have imagined earlier.

One example of this is computerized fabrication techniques like those used to create the famous Apple iPhone. Other examples include automated production lines and robotics; both of which can be directly applied to architecture.

Architects now have access to powerful tools that help them produce incredible designs at a speed never before possible. Technology has influenced what people consider important about building design, from style to function.

Digital technology also allows for better precision and control over design parameters than ever before. This gives architects more freedom to experiment with different shapes and styles, something that was not always the case.

Overall, technological advances have had an enormous influence on how buildings look and feel, and even determined which styles become popular.

Contemporary architecture

Recent architectural styles are not necessarily inspired by natural or classical motifs, but rather focused on creating spaces that feel relaxed and comfortable for the viewer. Spaces with vibrant colors and patterns abound, and so do sleek silhouettes.

Many consider this style to be less inspiring than others, but I believe it is very successful in our increasingly visual society. The average person these days spends a great deal of time looking at their phone, computer screen, or television; interior design shifts into gear to make what you look at feel good.

I think contemporary designs have become too obsessed with making space “look pretty” to satisfy their purpose. They may lack classic appeal, but they usually promote an easy flow of energy.

They are typically built around a well-defined center and focus more on linear shapes instead of rounded ones. With all of this room left empty, the mind can create its own narratives and stories.
