How Is Architecture Influenced By Culture

As mentioned before, culture has an enormous influence over how people design buildings. Buildings that are designed in a certain style or genre use specific themes and motifs to make their audience feel comfortable. These styles become culturally accepted as “of-the-scene” and even copied by other designers.

Architecture is also influenced by cultures through what types of stories it wants to tell. Some want to emphasize strength and power, while others focus more on intimacy and connection.

This article will talk about some examples of cultural concepts that have made an impact on architectural designs. We will discuss several different fields such as mythology, folklore, religion, and psychology. All these areas contain rich material that can be incorporated into your own creative process!

Mythology refers to any set of stories which describe Gods, Goddesses, heroes, and villains. In Greek mythology, for example, there was Zeus, Athena, Apollo, and Hades. The story of each God features his biography and why he is important to society.

Folklore is similar to myth but instead focuses on narratives that explain natural phenomena. For instance, the reason we have seasons and winter weather is because Jupiter, the Sun, spends one full year traveling around the Earth ecliptically (its orbit isn’t circular).

Religion teaches us about its deities via texts and artifacts left behind.

Japanese culture

Japan is known for its rich culture that includes color, symbolism, and aesthetics. Buildings in Japan are very aesthetically pleasing and well designed. The country’s art style has strong influences from nature and geometry.

Architecture in Japan is marked by simplicity and elegance. Many of the buildings have beautiful materials used to create structures such as wood or stone. These materials add depth and richness to the space.

The use of windows and doors are also important components of architecture in Japan. There are many types of glass including thick plate glass, clear glass, and tinted glass. All three can be used to emphasize different things depending on what area they are placed in.

Places with heavy traffic require more transparency so people can see outside. Thin plates of glass are good for this!

Thick white walls are also used heavily in some spaces. This creates an effect similar to looking through a window into another room. It removes your sense of intimacy and adds a feeling of separation.

Conversely, darker colors like black, gray, and red are often seen in Japanese architecture. They give off a comforting feel which helps promote relaxation.

French culture

Like most European cultures, the beauty of architecture in France is very dependent on their cultural heritage. The Romans have left an incredible legacy that still lives on to this day, even though they are long gone!

The Roman Empire ruled over large areas of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and their influence can be seen in many fields, not just architecture. Many modern styles are inspired by Ancient Rome, such as the use of columns or arches in building structures.

Architecture in France has also been influenced by the Gothic style. This was characterized by pointed arch roofs with heavy ribbing and traceries (window decorations). It was first popularized in Germany around the twelfth century, but it did not become well-known outside of Europe until later.

Another important design element comes from the Chinese culture. China is one of the few countries that produces beautiful landscape scenery. Their emphasis on nature makes them develop strong relationships between people and the environment, which then spreads onto other aspects of life.

This relationship extends into architecture, where there are examples of buildings with windows or doors that open up to the natural world, or vegetation beyond. A famous example of this is the Ching Dynasty palace in Chengde, China. You can see lots of greenery coming through the window walls and doors.

German culture

Like most cultures, there are some styles of architecture that seem to dominate the field as time goes on. These styles can be adapted to fit any environment, but it is important to recognize their origins to appreciate them. The classic examples of this style include Gothic structures and Neoclassical buildings.

Gothic was an architectural style popularized in the Middle Ages throughout Europe. It consisted of pointed arches and vaults with heavy use of tracery (window patterns). This elaborate decoration gave the space a sense of spirituality.

Neoclassicism is another influential style that still stands the test of time. It originated during the Enlightenment when designers wanted to emphasize order, rationality, and strength over nature or spiritual elements.

This style is characterized by large columns and capitals, proportionally sized doors and windows, and overall simplicity. Both these styles have become very common at many different scales and so they’re not necessarily appropriate for other environments.

British culture

Britain is an island nation with a rich history that has left an enormous impact on their current cultural landscape. These cultures include their art, literature, music, cuisine, and more.

Architecture is no different as many of the fundamentals for architectural style come from things like geography, climate, economic conditions, political systems and religion. All these factors play a role in how people build and what styles they adopt to represent themselves or the society they belong to.

British architecture has influenced other national styles over the last few centuries, most notably Italian and French design. The English have also shaped American interior and building designs due to the country’s colonial roots and influence.

But don’t take our word for it – look around you! You’ll probably find some British touches here and there.

American culture

Like most cultures, America’s is shaped by its history. Our histories influence what we believe about ourselves as individuals and as a nation. It also have significant impacts in how we perceive architecture.

Architecture is an expression of something internal – your beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes towards life. The style you choose for your home or office expresses who you are as a person. Your house says something about you; it reflects your morals, lifestyle, and priorities.

In fact, there is some theory which suggests that when people look at a building, they infer the owner's personality based off the styles, colors, and materials used.

It has been documented many times that people with similar backgrounds tend to have similar interior decoration tastes. For example, someone from California will likely use bright, bold colors and patterns compared to someone who comes from the Midwest, where people are typically warmer and brighter. People who grew up near large cities will probably invest in sleek, modern furniture instead of the more classic designs.

This article will talk more about how certain architectural styles were influenced by our national culture.

Russian culture

Like most cultures, there are some themes that seem to repeat themselves over and over in architecture. One such theme is the influence of culture on building styles. Buildings shaped like cubes or cylinders are influenced by the cube shape of the Roman Empire. The Italian Renaissance was heavily inspired by Ancient Rome.

The Egyptian style buildings have large rounded shapes resembling the pyramids. These similarities are not coincidences but rather due to similar cultural influences. In this case, Egypt!

Chinese art has lots of motifs including cranes which can be seen in many tall skyscrapers. This influence is also not accidental as the tallest structure in the world is actually a crane!

Architecture is an expression of its time period and how people live. Looking at old buildings you will find structures with different geometric shapes and decorations reflecting the current fashion trends or technology used at the time.

Italian culture

As we have seen, architecture is heavily influenced by decorations and styles of art and sculpture. These features influence what kind of buildings you will see in different cultures. For example, Ancient Rome was known for their elaborate use of decoration and pillars. Their tall arches resembled those architectural columns.

Architecture in India is characterized by its use of large domed roofs or “tiled” roofs. This style of roof comes from Buddhism, which is one of India’s major religions. The patterning used to make this roof look like bamboo leaves also came from Buddhist symbolism.

In Japan, there are very few windows due to the country’s tradition of introverted thinking. Even doors are not as prevalent because they create too much light exposure that could invite outsiders into your space.

These examples show how cultural traditions shape the way people design houses.

Spanish culture

Spain is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with people from around the globe flocking to their beautiful beaches and sunny climate.

Spain’s colonial history has left an impact on its architecture, including buildings such as cathedrals and churches, monuments and statues dedicated to specific individuals or events.

These cultural references are important building blocks for architects looking to add depth to their style. For example, if you look at the roofs of many European churches, you will see that they resemble the top half of a circle. This shape was inspired by the Christian church where Christians worship God, so it symbolizes Christianity.

Other architectural styles use similar shapes and decorations to convey similar messages. For instance, the Moorish influence in Spain uses curved lines and geometric patterns to create an elegant feel.

This link between design and culture is very powerful. If you want to achieve success as an architect, studying other cultures’ designs and how they blend into their environment can help you develop your own style.
