The way that most computer programs access memory is through what’s called an indirect reference. An indirect reference is when a program does not refer to every element of a set directly, but instead refers to an offset into this set. This offsets is then referred to as a pointer or variable.
A good example of this is if you have a book with paragraphs and words in it. You do not need to know where each word begins and ends in order to read them. You only need a pointer (or offset) to get these pieces together.
This is similar to how computers work. Computers do not load their operating system onto RAM completely, they leave some bits empty so that more software can be loaded later. These leftover bits are pointers or variables.
By knowing just one pointer, you can pick out any piece of information quickly and easily. This is why programmers use them so frequently!
But there is a problem...
Too many pointers mean confusion. When too many things are pointed to, you cannot tell which thing will be used next. This creates a lot of overhead for your computer to figure out which one gets picked next.
Software engineers must find ways to reduce the number of references in their code in order to improve performance.
There are three major types of risc architectures that address this issue: von neumann architecture, Harvard architecture, and pure pipelining.

Another important part of computer memory is an address. An address is like a house number that points to where something can be found, or stored. Computer software and programs use these addresses to access the parts of memory that contain information.
Computer software and applications often perform this accessing process called “loading” by using a pointer. A pointer is just another word for location. For example, if you want to find out what city someone lives in, you ask them their home address which is a pointer to where they live.
A program’s pointer looks at a piece of memory it contains and then says ‘aha! That thing must be there! Let me look closer at it!’ Then it uses the address contained in the memory it has looked at as a reference point to access the other piece of data.

Another way to access memory is by reading from it. This process is known as memory reading or RAM reading, and is typically done for information. For example, computer programs often want to know if an item has been selected so they can perform functions such as copying items to another location, removing items, or changing its properties.
By accessing the element that signifies whether something is chosen, you can determine this information. This type of reading is very fast since there is no work being done other than looking at the data.
This article will discuss some examples of how different types of architectures use RAM reading to function. However, before moving onto those, let’s review the three main components of any CPU-equipped device.

The second type of memory access is called a “write” or store operation. This occurs when information, such as data or instructions, are written into the computer’s memory. For example, if you were reading this article right now then that information has been stored in your brain so it can be recalled at a later time.
A write happens when one component (such as a processor or graphics card) sends information to another component (such as memory). It may also be referred to as an “store” since it stores something in the other device.
There are two main types of writes depending on what they are writing into the memory. They are either input/output (I/O) space or internal memory. An I/O space write would be storing some piece of information onto a hard drive or similar external storage device, whereas an internal memory write would be writing a sequence of instructions into the working memory.

Another way to access memory is through what are called multilevel memories or MAMs. These can be seen as stacked sets of RAM that get smaller as they go up, much like how we already discussed how regular DRAM works.
The difference comes at the very top level, where there are different types of cells used to hold data. Some of these cell types are static (they retain their value regardless of other information) and some are dynamic (these depend on whatever bit of information you place into it).
Static cells typically use one of two materials for storage: metal or silicon dioxide. Both of these have been integrated into chips before so engineers had time to test them out. Metal has higher conductivity than normal semiconductors which helps speed up processing, while silicon dioxide is more stable than ordinary glassy substances and will not easily break down when exposed to air and water.
These two materials make good capacitors because they can store charge effectively without wasting too much energy in doing so. Engineers use this property to create something called a gate capacitor, which acts as a switch for whether an electric current flows between two points.
By using gates with different dielectrics, we are able to have separate parts of our chip that perform different functions.

The most common type of computer memory is called static, or volatile, memory. This is your computer’s main memory – the place where all programs and files are stored while you’re using it.
Static RAM (SRAM) is one of the more common types of DRAM. SRAM comes in larger sizes because it does not need to be refreshed as often. Refresh means moving some electrons into the storage node to keep it charged, which takes energy and time.
So instead of having to refresh every bit of data, only those bits that have lost their charge are re-charged, leaving behind a ghost image of what they used to look like. This is why very fast computers use lots of SRAM– even if you aren’t actively working with any files or apps, this extra memory is still being used!
Dynamic RAM (DRAM) doesn’t need to be refreshed as much, so it can be accessed faster, but it will lose its information over time unless it is constantly refreshed. Because of this, dynamic RAM is usually less expensive than SRAM.
Think about how old technology like cell phones and laptops depend heavily on flash memory — an example of DRAM. Since these devices don’t require constant refreshing of data, they are relatively inexpensive, but they do suffer from loss of information due to limited battery life.

Another important part of computer memories is called cache memory. This is very specific type of storage that works similarly to how your brain stores information.
Cache memory comes in two varieties: Instruction level cache (ILC) and Data level cache (DLC). ILC caches frequently accessed instructions so they can be quickly executed, while DLC caches data so it can be retrieved faster.
Most computers have both types of cache memory due to their importance. Graphics cards are an excellent example of this!
A lot of video games use ILC and/or DLC because many processes needed for gameplay access lots of different software and libraries. These often times cannot work properly without them.
That’s why there is usually at least 1-2 GiB of DDR3 RAM in most gaming laptops. The same goes for CPU caches; CPUs need a good amount of space to store frequently used data and programs.
Since graphics processing units (GPUs) are quite power hungry, GPU manufacturers include large amounts of GDDR5 or higher speed DRAM as well.

Another way to access memory is through what are called memory mapped registers or just referred to as register banks. Register banks allow you to directly connect certain parts of your computer’s internal processor or GPU with a specific area of RAM, creating what is known as a direct mapping.
The most common use for this type of technology is graphics cards that have an extra large amount of fast RAM attached to it to help speed up processing. This external RAM is used to hold textures and other graphical information such as frame buffers that carry over from one image to the next.
By adding more external RAM to a graphics card, we can increase its performance because there is now more room to store all these textures and frame buffers. Graphics cards that use this technique are sometimes called GDDR (Graphics Double Data Rate) RAM since each bank has twice the data transfer rate of normal DRAM.
Another reason why having more RAM may be important is so you do not run out of space too quickly. By having more storage space, you have more room to save your files and software.
