Welcome!

This article will discuss how is the job market for interior design as it relates to interior design, design and art. It will also cover how people and businesses can find work as interior designers, as well as tips for setting up your home, growing your interior design business, and getting hired.

Decorating a home is one of life's most delightful activities. We live in one of the most beautiful countries on the planet, where many design styles are found, each offering its own unique opportunities and ideas for personalization. And for all that beauty, there are still a few things that a house needs. And one of those is the aesthetic it behoves to show.

A keen observer may have noticed that different parts of a house are displayed with a degree of anticipation, which is almost always a good thing. But what many people do not realize is that this anticipation can be translated into a financial consideration: This is the beauty of interior design.

The job market for interior design

Do not expect to get just any job. Everyone and their cat thinks they can decorate. The reality is that this is probably not the case, as I know people with no interior design training who have had incredible success in the industry. So you must prove yourself in any position.

Businesses that hire interior designers make a promise. They cannot simply run away from it. They have to do it, and the best way to do that is to make a good first impression. So do not make the mistake of thinking that every job is going to be easy money. There are many weeks of heavy lifting ahead of you and the occasional stinker that may cost you your job.

How to become an interior designer

Just because the industry is booming and you have the training and experience, this does not mean you can just waltz in and start getting work. You must do your homework.

You must be armed with the right knowledge and passion, and have the right portfolio to show prospective clients. You must have references and references. It is very common for a person to apply for work, and not have a single contact they can point to. So before you apply anywhere, be prepared to ask for references.

In the meantime, you should also apply to some of the national design colleges in your area. The place to start is with the real deal, and the thing to remember is that getting into the school is probably the easiest way to break into the industry.

Starting a business

One of the greatest benefits to running a business is the ability to draw your salary straight into your business account. In the same way, there is the temptation to work for yourself at the expense of your personal life.

Not having an office space can be a huge disadvantage to business owners because most places have doors and offices that are open to the public. A closed door can give you an instant 'No' to new clients.

One of the great things about having a business is that you can grow it into a career. You can do it for a while, and then, when you feel ready, you can build up your professional profile and start making money.

To start a business, you have to think like an entrepreneur and be prepared to have money flowing in, but not all at the same time. Money can be spent as fast as it comes in. It is an easy trap to fall into and should be avoided at all costs.

If you are tempted to ask for payment before you deliver an in-home or office-based project, stop and reconsider. Be sure to invest enough time to prove your work to clients before asking for payment.

Gathering work for your portfolio

My own business is very unusual because I don't have a formal interior design company and only work on my own projects. A few of my clients hired me because of my work and my work alone. I was very much a self-employed freelancer.

When starting your own business, you will need to give yourself a goal. Whether that be a dollar amount or length of time that you need to gain as many clients as possible. Some of the most successful business people use their social network to gather projects for their portfolio.

This is also a good way to get known and receive clients. So make sure you are on the market, and ask people for anything that will give you a better chance of getting work.

Getting into the trade

A huge advantage to becoming an interior designer is that you already know the skills you need. You may not have completed the course, but it does not mean that you do not have the necessary skills.

Many of the technical skills that you will use as an interior designer are taught in school. If you know how to use a power drill and put up wallpaper, you will be very valuable in any interior designer's office.

From working with a client on their home, they will probably want you to work with them again.

The design industry is very much a service industry and it is important to remember that you will need to give your clients an idea of what it will cost them before you start working on their homes. This gives you a better chance of having a more successful business in the future.

Once you know what you want, take some time to learn about the business side of the business. If you do not know what you are doing, how are you going to attract clients? How are you going to communicate to clients?

The last thing you want to do is be rushed into work when you do not have the proper qualifications or experience.

To school or not to school

Love to Learn

Please note that it may be helpful have a degree and/or professional designation before you can work as an interior designer. You can use the websites interior design schools to find the courses that will give you the training and qualifications you need.

It is hard to think of an interior designer as a 'job' because the job does not end when the client says 'Done' and the job is complete.

There is a lot more work to be done after the project is complete and many people work on designs for a number of clients.

One of the downsides of the interior design industry is that the work does not necessarily end once a project is completed.

The design industry is a service industry and it is important to remember that you will need to give your clients an idea of what it will cost them before you start working on their homes. This gives you a better chance of having a more successful business in the future.

Wrapping up

When you decide to work in interior design you will need to have a back-up plan. That means if your business does not work out, you need to have a plan B and a plan C.

You are still going to need to take some time out of your working day and go to a job, however, you will have to work towards your business goals.

In other words, as a successful interior designer you will need to live a normal life outside of your work hours. You will still have to eat and pay the bills. If your business does not work out, you will have to work to meet new clients. You will have to do your own marketing, and you will need to work on your website.
