As I mentioned before, studying architecture is a very in-depth field that takes many different routes depending on what area of the profession you want to focus on. There are some students who choose to go into residential or landscape design, while others decide to work as an architect directly or through one of their subsidiaries.

Architecture can be described as creating environments by using shapes and concepts that relate to space and proportion. These spaces can be internal like your house, external like a building site, or outdoor like a patio or deck. Spaces with organized patterns and organization are more aesthetically pleasing than those that do not have any structure.

This does not mean everything has to look boring, but looking at basics of design will help you create beautiful surroundings. The most common types of architecture include buildings, landscapes, and public art. All three of these categories could contain various styles and trends which show how architects develop relationships to space and organize it.

Landscapes typically consist of vegetation and water with paved areas to place settings or sculptures. Public art includes things such as statues, murals, and other decorations that emphasize artistic expression. Buildings are where most people’s attention goes since they require users’ interaction and need shelter from the weather. They can also have special features such as skylights or balconies so people outside can still enjoy the space.

There are many different architectural styles at Virginia Tech

While some may consider the use of glass as integral to architecture, it is actually a relatively modern style. Glass was first used in buildings during the Renaissance era in Italy. Since then, it has become increasingly popular due to its unique qualities that allow people to see through it and admire the space beyond.

However, not every building should have large windows or even walls made out of glass. For example, using glass as an interior wall would mean that part of the room is totally exposed to the outside, which could be dangerous if there’s ever a fire or earthquake.

Another drawback of having lots of glass is how difficult it can be to contain and protect your home or office when something bad happens. This is why some buildings feature brick or stone exteriors instead of glass.

At Virginia Tech, you will find several examples of both types of exterior features. Some buildings do not even have any glass at all! A good way to tell if a building uses too much glass is by looking at the size of their windows. If they are very tall and narrow, then probably more glass than needed.

There are also some buildings with very spartan interiors, which look really cool but make it hard to identify where one area ends and another begins. These types of designs typically feature white or gray colors, which help focus attention onto other things such as decorations or sculptures.

The campus is big and there are many different buildings

A lot of people talk about how beautiful some parts of Virginia Tech’s architecture are, but they fail to recognize all that the school has to offer.

The way students feel when walking across the campus or taking an art class in one of the museums is very influenced by the setting of the school.

Virginia Tech’s heavy use of red brick goes a long way towards shaping student perception of the area. This influence doesn’t just apply to aesthetics — it also impacts mental health and overall feeling of safety.

All too often we see stories in the news about shootings happening at schools around America. But what most people don’t know is that these incidents are usually sparked not because of poor teaching or ineffective programs, but because the victim was targeted due to their race.

Most of the buildings are modern and sleek

Modern architecture is defined as anything that was built after 1950. This includes everything from skyscrapers to homes, museums, and libraries. Some people even consider houses in the 1980s and 1990s to be examples of modern design.

Modern architects strive to create efficient spaces where you can spend time exploring the surroundings. Spaces with glass or very little concrete allow your mind to wander and explore the space.

This looks beautiful during sunset or sunrise hours when light pours into the building. It also allows all of the colors of the surrounding nature to shine through.

For students at Virginia Tech, there is an easy way to identify an architect who designs many modern looking buildings. They typically have their own style which they repeat over and over again.

Virginia Tech has several famous alumni that designed some incredible looking buildings such as Daniel Ponton, Jr., founder of StudioPontus.

There are some old buildings on campus

Although there are not many, there are indeed several older buildings at Virginia Tech that play an integral part in shaping students’ perceptions of architecture. Many people may not know what they are or how important they are to the school’s architectural identity, but they should!

The Smith-Brown Student Center is one of these older buildings. It was completed back in 1980 and it now houses over 30 student organization offices as well as the School of Education’s administrative offices.

However, its true importance comes from its namesake — Dr. William Addison Smith ‘39 and Robert L. Brown '47, both graduates of the College of Design - Department of Architecture. They were two architects who worked together before starting their own practices.

Dr. Smith was also active in various professional organizations such as AIA (the American Institute of Architects) and VSAE (Virginia Society of Architectural Educators). He received numerous awards during his career, including the AIA Medal and The Thomas Jefferson Award.

In addition to having a successful practice, he made significant contributions to academia through leadership positions at VCU, University of Florida, North Carolina State University, and other institutions.

He died unexpectedly in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of success and community service. His passing left a void in the VT community that has never been filled. He will always be remembered here at Virginia Tech for his achievements and passion for teaching.

Some of the buildings are very beautiful

While some may consider the architecture at Virginia Tech to be boring or even ugly, there are many who appreciate it as being unique and interesting. There is not one building that stands out as having incredible decorations, but rather a collection that all work together to create a sense of space and unity.

Many people praise the academic setting of VT’s school system. The brick and stone structure style used here creates an intimate feeling in which students feel close to their teachers and professors. This helps promote learning, especially when talking about socially oriented courses like psychology or sociology.

There are many different neighborhoods on campus

Located in south central, southeast or east-central Hokie Town is one of the most well known architectural districts at Virginia Tech. It’s called College Park.

College Park was designed to be an integral part of the new student community. The area features open green spaces with trees and shrubs that invite students outside and promote wellness.

It also has active clubs and groups focused on promoting health and wellness. For example, there is an annual 5K run/walk event in the park where people of all fitness levels can participate.

Add this to the fact that lots of restaurants and food vendors have opened up shop along New Hampshire Avenue (the main street through the district) and you have got a pretty healthy environment.

All of these things help create a strong sense of community among students living in College Park. This feeling is very powerful because it creates a sense of belonging and trust.

Some are very safe

Many people associate architecture with large buildings or even structures like skyscrapers, but that’s not what architects do! Architects design spaces and environments to make them feel comfortable for those in they space, to use it effectively, and to inspire awe at its beauty and sophistication.

Architecture is about creating experiences for individuals and groups, and how well an environment encourages participation and inspiration depends mostly on personal taste.

Some people love looking at beautiful buildings and statues while others find such sights boring or even annoying. The best architectural settings allow you to enjoy them without feeling too influenced by them.

Virginia Tech has many beautiful monuments and sculptures spread out across campus. They are clearly meant to be seen and admired, so most students find them interesting. Others may find them overly dramatic or over-powering.

It is up to each individual student which ones they choose to visit and study close up. People come to VT with different tastes and styles, so there is no one ideal setting.

Some are very expensive

The cost to attend school in architecture is not cheap! Depending on where you go, there can be significant costs involved. Costs include tuition, room and board, transportation expenses, and of course, monthly living expenses.

Many people make the assumption that an architectural degree comes with a high salary, but this isn’t always the case. In fact, some companies will pay less than what students are paying for schools like FAIA or BArch.

FAIA stands for Fellow Of The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and is equivalent to being a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIBA). An architect with at least one year under his or her belt who has completed either a bachelors in art or business administration may apply to become a member of AIB. This is a pretty competitive process so don’t expect to find out if you’re eligible unless you do your research.

There are also two other degrees available from the AIA which are beyond the scope of design. These are the Certified Associate in Health Service Management and the Certified Project Manager certificate programs. Both require much more extensive study and are not as easy to come by as becoming a full-fledged member.

These additional certificates show proof of professional knowledge and skill in their fields, making them valuable additions to anyone’s portfolio.
