As discussed earlier, creating a great looking home or office is more than just picking up some cool decorations or shades of color for your walls. It is exploring ways to use space efficiently, finding new uses for old materials, and thinking about how things are organized and designed.
With that in mind, what would you think if I told you that most people do not have a good understanding of how many years their house or business building will remain functional?
I’m talking decades here! Most individuals don’t know when they should be investing in renovations or remodels, nor do they understand how much money they can afford to spend on changes.
In fact, according to Remodeling Magazine, one third of all homeowners plan to spend less than $5,000 on improvements!
That’s amazing really because research shows that improved energy efficiency can reduce your utility bills by 10-30%!
And saving money on utilities is always a nice side effect of improvement projects. So why aren’t we doing it?
It’s simple really. We are too busy spending money to improve our homes and businesses, but we never seem to find the time. And even though we might want to make changes, we don’t know whether or not we have the funds to do so.
Luckily there is an easy solution to this problem, and it doesn’t cost anything but your time.

Before modern day design languages such as Neoclassical, Minimalist, or even Postmodernism, there was an era of what we now refer to as bs (or bad style) architectural styles. These are characterized by very elaborate decorations and features that seem out-of-place with their surroundings.
The most well known example of this is the use of large rosettes or volutes in door casing and/or fenestrations. A less famous but much more terrifying example is called a dragon’s mouth window. This is a three story window flanked by two dragons’ mouths made up of many small panes of glass. All these pieces have to be designed, built, and installed with extreme care because one tiny misstep could cause disastrous damage or collapse.
These types of windows were mostly used in expensive resorts and hotels during the early 20th century. Since they cost so much money, only rich people had them!
Today, most buildings feature either minimalistic or neoclassic styling, but some still stick with bs designs! People who like bs styles think it adds “style” to a building. Others may admire the unique way the architect experimented with different textures and shapes.
But all too often, architects choose bs over more popular styles for no reason at all.

The term ‘modern’ is typically associated with sleek, minimalist designs that feature large windows or walls of glass to showcase your home’s interior or exterior space. However, modern doesn’t mean empty!
Modern homes are full of rich textures, colors, patterns, and decorations to match any style. Materials like brick, wood, iron, leather, and stone add depth and personality to a room.
By incorporating these more elaborate design elements, you create a feeling of sophistication in your home. You also get some good value for the money spent as they are expensive materials!
Many people associate modern styles with clean lines and bright, airy spaces, but there are many other types.

Over the past two years, I have worked with many different types of buildings, ranging from homes to offices to commercial spaces. What I have learned is that there are three main lessons that every architect must learn about building structures.
These basics apply not only to new architects, but also to experienced professionals looking to improve their design skills.
Lesson number one - verticality
This is the importance of having tall structures in your designs. It seems obvious, but we as humans spend a large amount of time interacting with other people or things at a height.
Interacting with someone eye-to-eye, talking to them, eating food they put in front of you, etc...we rely heavily upon this interaction for social connection, communication, and understanding of what the person is saying.
It is no surprise then that we feel more connected to someone if they make an effort to be close to us physically.
A lot of successful relationships develop due to this basic need for physical contact.
Architecture is a way to achieve this goal through space exploration and engagement.
Making rooms and areas of your house, office, or apartment tall so that you can use it, walk up and down its stairs, lean on it, or sit atop it helps create intimacy.
Having a kitchen or dining area that reaches beyond the wall next to it gives you extra room to move around and interact with others.

The term Bs (or big shop) architecture was coined in the 1980’s, when small-to-medium size businesses were becoming increasingly dependent on technology to succeed. Businesses that rely heavily on computer software or online services are referred to as service-focused business.
Since then, it has become the norm for almost every business to use some form of digital technology for their operations. This includes everything from payroll systems to supply chain management applications and beyond.
Many large corporations adopt an off-the-shelf solution provided by a third party vendor, which they customise and blend into their internal system. This is called outsourcing. By having access to the source code, these vendors can develop solutions that are more advanced than what you could create yourself!
The importance of strong leadership
It takes time to build trust and confidence within an organisation. A leader who sets high standards and uses effective communication skills will inspire people to work harder towards meeting those standards.
In addition to this, they should be able to relate well to others and motivate them to do things that are difficult for them – sometimes even taking responsibility for other people’s tasks so that they feel better about themselves.

The term ‘Budget-savvy’ is not totally accurate to use when referring to architects. This word suggests that being budget friendly is their main purpose, but this isn't always the case!
Architects have other goals beyond maximizing savings for your project. For example, they aim to maximize space, emphasize sustainability, create aesthetically pleasing designs, and so on.
By educating yourself about different types of architects you will know what differences there are and which ones fit best with you.
It's like buying new clothes — if someone doesn't seem right, go somewhere else! You'll save money by going to events hosted by non-profit groups or doing your research online to determine who fits you as an individual.

A few years ago, people would agree that developing your architecture skills is more important than it is today. This is due to two main reasons. First, most of us use technology everyday so we kind of take it for granted.
Second, architects are becoming less necessary as technology advances rapidly. For example, there’s now an app that can create almost any house design you want!
With all this talk about how easy it is to make houses these days, why should anyone be an architect? Or at least, what value does being an architect hold up in this era?
I totally get it if you’re not interested because you’ve already got everything you need to launch into business as an interior designer or home decorator. You have your own style and you promote yourself by posting pictures and descriptions of your work online.
But I also think it’s great to know some basics about making buildings even though they're no longer needed very much. It's like knowing how to bake a decent loaf of bread or put together a good puzzle — knowledge that will always be valuable.
Beware modern trends That'll Disappoint Your Customers
There are many flashy new architectural styles coming out every year. Some stick around for quite a while before everyone moves onto the next fad.
For instance, look back when vinyl siding was all the rage. Now it's been replaced mostly by real wood.

A well-designed house will last at least ten years, if not longer. This is an extremely important factor to consider when picking your house style!
House styles that are popular now may not remain so in two or three years. Materials such as vinyl windows and wood laminate flooring are very durable, but they can be expensive to replace later on.
The best house styles make use of sturdy, neutral materials that can easily be replaced. Examples include brick, stone, painted steel, and timber laminates. All of these look great and can be worked into the home’s interior decor quickly.
Avoid overly ornate furniture and decorations. They may appeal to the eye at first, but can add up over time!
Overall, keep things simple and classic.
When choosing your college, make sure you consider not only whether it is close to home or easier to get around, but also if it is in a good area. What are their reputation levels? Are there enough students and professors like said reputation level?
You should do some research online about each school to find out what students feel about them. You can read reviews, talk to people who have attended before, and even speak with teachers to see how well-respected they are.
It’s important to look at things such as cost, safety, and quality of education when selecting where to go. Make sure that you don’t overpay for the lessons, training, and personal attention that you want to gain from this place!
Furthermore, check to see if there are any affordable opportunities outside of class. There may be an art club or sporting event happening every week. Or maybe there is a yoga lesson every morning! All of these could help you focus more on your studies while giving yourself other ways to enjoy the campus.
In fact, many schools offer student discounts to local gyms, restaurants, and shops so that you can keep up with others your age and still enjoy the city.
