Recent studies have determined that most people believe architects are paid more than they actually are. In fact, some claim that most architect jobs can be filled by anyone with an online degree!

Many individuals feel that being an architect is not lucrative so they choose to pursue other careers instead. This perception creates a very uncomfortable situation for employers who struggle to find qualified professionals.

It is important to note that although many workers perceive that their peers get good pay, it is extremely difficult to obtain accurate information about what individual employees earn.

This article will discuss how much money architects make and the factors influencing this figure.

The average income of an architect

There is no standard definition or list of qualifications for what constitutes “architect”. This makes it hard to compare like with-lihgter salaries. However, we can talk about the mean income earned per year by architects.

The average income is defined as the total amount spent each employee in the group earns divided by the number of employees in the group. For example, if two colleagues earn $50,000 per year and $25,000 per year then the average salary is $37,500 (or 50% higher).

In 2017, The National Association of Architectural Accreditors (NAAA) conducted a survey asking members to report their annual gross revenues. These revenue figures were then adjusted for expenses to determine net profit margins.

Architectural firms charge a percentage of the total project cost

As architects, we get paid for our services. We are compensated for our creative vision and skill in designing buildings and landscapes. But what about all the other things that have to happen with your design?

Engineering, drafting, planning- these are part of what it takes to turn an idea into a completed building or landscape. They’re also parts of the architectural fee.

Engineers and planners take up some of this time, but not much. A lot of their work is done remotely through software. And even more of it can be done quickly via computer aided designs (CAD).

However, when they do meet face to face, these professionals usually receive little to no compensation outside of the professional fees already covered by the firm.

This doesn't make sense to us.

Architectural firms may charge a fixed fee

Many architectural firms have shifted to a model where they only accept work that they feel will fulfill their income goals, not the other way around. Firms that remain dependent on clients for revenue can be hard pressed to find enough to satisfy both needs at times!

This is particularly true in our current market conditions, as many projects seem to come to a halt due to lack of funding or owners pulling out.

Many architects now rely heavily on non-profit organizations, universities, or private individuals to keep them busy. These opportunities are great for your career, but it can get tricky determining which ones are worth adding into your workload and what types of projects fit into your schedule.

As an architect, you should be able to make a living doing your job so unless there are major financial hardships looming, you should be charging your fees.

Architectural firms may charge a percentage of the buildable area

Like other professional services, architectural fees are not always completely transparent. Depending on the firm you work for, there can be some sneaky ways to hoover up extra money.

Many architects and architecture students find that they’re paid a monthly or yearly fee per ‘percentage of build’. This is typically done through calculating how much space you have available in your office as an architect, then multiplying this by their hourly rate.

This way you get paid more for designing bigger spaces than those with smaller offices! It also helps them justify the higher cost of their studio (the place where they work) which most often includes rent, utilities and maintenance.

Usually these costs are already included in the price of the apartment or house you are working on, but the additional revenue comes from adding onto what we call the ‘developer premium�’. This is when builders add a margin to the purchase price to pay for the expensive licence agreements, lawyers, designers and others involved in setting up a new development.

The developer premium can amount to several thousand dollars per square metre, making it very easy for architects to make large amounts of money. Unfortunately though, many people do not know about this markup artist style.

Architectural firms may not charge any fees until the project is complete

Like most other professional occupations, architects get paid what they are worth. This can vary quite a bit depending on several factors, such as market conditions and personal preferences of individual professionals.

In fact, some less expensive architects are very successful due to being relatively popular and having enough income to cover their bills.

Most contracts don’t include architecture as part of the job, which is why we never really see it in television shows or films. If you want proof look at all those movie sets that don’t feature an architectural rendering.

Architects also get paid more than people who aren’t architects, but due to the nature of their jobs, they don’t receive as much credit for their work. This sometimes leads to higher compensation.

The way most companies structure employment relationships are just like any other relationship; if you want to keep this person around, they need to be compensated well.
