Your studio or studio art class will provide you with a broad approach and may provide you with the prerequisite skills. But you need to know where to look if you want to really get serious about learning to paint.

The art market changes all the time, so keep this in mind if you are looking to make a career out of teaching. The more experience and knowledge you have the better you will be for yourself and your students.

What can I learn?

Learning all the newest tricks and techniques are what make up the majority of the price of a private art lesson. This is especially true if you want to specialize in a specific technique or are looking to brush up on a classic technique.

Thinking you need to have at least a Master’s degree to teach art can be limiting. You need to think carefully about your motives for becoming an art teacher. Most people just want to paint.

That’s all there is to it. If you want to make money at it, you can learn as much as you can about art.

How long will it take to complete a painting? What are the lessons in my art school curriculum? Are you really a great artist or are you just willing to learn the hard way?

I don’t believe you have to be a master at something in order to teach others. Even better, learn from the masters and incorporate their techniques into your work.

Dance classes are a great example of this. Do you need to be a trained ballerina to teach ballet? Of course not.

You can learn from all of the best teachers in the world.

However, if you want to teach dance, you need to know a little bit about dance. You can learn from magazines and online videos, but there’s nothing wrong with hiring a dance teacher if you want to be an expert.

What about student loans?

If you are thinking about becoming an art teacher, student loans may be an obstacle. I know, I know.

Not everyone can afford to finance their passion and you need to make it possible for those who can’t. That’s why you need to learn everything you can about how to become an art teacher and why you need to save as much as possible.

Here are some things to consider:

What sort of funding can you get? Depending on where you live, you may be eligible for a great rate on student loans.

That being said, if you’re going to be teaching painting, your rates will likely be high. I’ve heard of people who have been teaching art for years but have never received any student loans.

How often are your lessons? Many teachers teach a variety of art techniques or offer private lessons.

Many schools also offer cheap or free tutoring for students who need it. There are also plenty of art supply giveaways throughout the year for new and new grad students.

Once you find out about all these great opportunities, it’s a lot harder to give up your dream. It’s also less likely that you will get in over your head.

Why I teach...

I teach because I love it. It’s my passion. It’s my passion because I love art. No teacher loves to teach.

I would never even think of looking for another job. If I got a good job that paid me a decent wage, I would probably be bored after the first month.

It’s the same with school. Once you’ve been in a classroom for a while, there is very little to excite you. I feel like the best thing you can do with your life is work with what you’re good at and do it well.

Since I love art, the pay isn’t bad. I make more money as a teacher than I did as an engineer. However, the satisfaction of working with art is priceless.

I can’t imagine myself ever feeling excited about a job that doesn’t involve making art.

There are also a lot of great benefits. Teaching as an adjunct means you can spend more time on what you love.

Many of the lessons you’ll teach will be open-ended and interactive. The class will be more like an ongoing discussion than a lecture.

You’ll learn a lot, have fun, and share your love of art with as many people as you can.

Plus, all you need to do to be a teacher is teach a few lessons and take an online course on teaching. So, if you’re passionate about art, take a chance and get started teaching.

You’ll be surprised at how easy it is and how great it feels.

What does an art teacher look like?

I’ve had some amazing teachers. But I’ve also had some terrible teachers. My worst teachers are some of the ones that you’ve never met.

For example, one teacher used to bring her dog to school. Another asked all of the boys in her class to come up to the front of the room, stand in a circle, and hold hands. The next day the boys lined up and started to pray to Jesus.

It’s easier to be inspired by a great teacher than by a bad one. I always try to reflect on a great teacher when I’m teaching.

How do they think about a student’s art, encourage them, and lead their class?

Some people feel that when a student makes a mistake, a teacher should get really mad at them and make them feel awful. What I learned from those teachers is that they missed the boat.

You don’t want to give a student an excuse to quit art. You want them to ask for help, persevere, and keep learning. It’s impossible to get anywhere in art if you don’t take the time to learn the basics.

My best teacher is my mom. She had a passion for the arts. She had a lot of difficulties in school. She hated math and science, but excelled at art.

After school, she continued to study art, painting, drawing, and interior design. She never became famous, but she always supported her children’s interests.

Every time I made a mistake, she would say to me, “That was okay. You did a pretty good job.”

My mom’s words reinforced my belief that I could learn and grow from every mistake I made.

If I had learned that it was wrong to make mistakes, I would have never learned anything. I would have never opened my eyes to the possibilities of creativity.

As a teacher, you need to encourage creativity and be a role model for all the people you’re teaching. Even if you’re not a great artist, you can teach.

Your influence doesn’t end with your life. People will follow you to whatever else you do.
