The term “architect” has different definitions across cultures, time periods, and countries. In this article, we will discuss what is considered an architect in the United States and how much they make per year.
Many people associate architects with designing buildings, but that isn’t all they do! They also design landscapes, sew clothes, and even create furniture.
Landscape designers, for example, are not only focused on creating beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces, but they are also experts in horticulture which includes studying plants, soil, and water.
If you want to be an architect like Martha Stewart then you should know your fashion! Fashion designers work with fabrics and materials and organize runway shows.
Other than making pretty things, they coordinate or redesign existing clothing styles or creations of other artists. For instance, if someone designed jeans with patch pockets then a fashion designer would probably re-design those so it is more fashionable.
Architects who also work as interior decorators (IDCs) specialize in finding new uses for empty space by incorporating features into rooms. They may research popular style trends and find ways to apply them to new designs.
Facade specialists work with builders and owners to come up with creative ideas for expanding or replacing windows, doors, and walls.

Like most careers, the profession of architecture has evolved over time. Technically speaking, architects are designers of buildings and landscapes, but this definition is very broad.
Architects’ roles have shifted as technology changes and society shifts in terms of how people live.
They oversee everything from designing an apartment building to choosing which materials should be used for construction. Architects also work with engineers and other professionals such as interior decorators or landscape artists to ensure that what they design will function properly and look aesthetically pleasing.
Salaries vary depending on several factors, including the type of practice you run, where you reside, and whether you are working during business hours or not. Some firms even pay less than others even though their services are of a higher quality!

As we have discussed before, not every person who calls themselves an “architect” actually has authorization to use that title. In fact, even some architects are no longer using it! That said, what exactly does it mean to be an architect?
Typically, people refer to architectural professionals as designers or builders. However, these terms may mislead readers because they assume that anyone with a degree from an architecture school is automatically a good designer or builder. This isn’t always the case.
Some students choose to pursue master’s degrees in business administration instead, which can easily turn out to be lucrative for them. After all, working in design or construction doesn’t need a college education!
Furthermore, since most employers only look at your resume and never at your academic record, someone could lie about having an architecture degree. An entry level position requiring little-to-no knowledge of how buildings work might still pay well enough to satisfy their financial needs.

As we have discussed before, not every person who studies architecture becomes an architect. Only about 20% of students in architecture programs are able to pursue professional practices as architects. The rest of those people choose to work in related fields such as engineering or construction.

As we have discussed, not every person who calls themselves a “designer” actually puts in the effort to achieve that title. With the explosion of the design community online, it becomes hard to tell what people mean when they use this term.
Many individuals with no formal training in art or marketing use the word ‘designer’ for their own personal gain. They may even take advantage of the prestige attached to the name to steal money from unsuspecting clients.
In fact, there are over 1 million students worldwide who proudly call themselves designers without having any degree or certification!
This has led some to question if using the architect license really means anything at all.

As we have discussed before, being an architect means working with other people’s ideas and perspectives. Architects typically work as contractors or employers. This is different from being your own boss, where you get to create your own dreams and goals.
As a contractor, you will be hired by another person or company to do a job for them. For example, if I were hiring someone to design a house for me, they would come and look at my house, talk to me about my intentions, and then make suggestions on how to achieve those.
This can range from suggesting colors to advising on whether to build an attached garage or not. The important thing about a contractor is that they are in it for themselves. They hope to earn money through their jobs so that they can live their lives and pursue what they want.
Another key difference between employees and independent contractors is that employees give up some control over when they go to work and how much time they spend doing things each day. This way, you get the best out of them because they feel like they have enough control over their schedule.
For more information on why this is important, check our article: Why Is It Important To Have A Contractor License?
Editorial note: We use “contractors” instead of just “employees” because even though many architects hold formal employee positions, most others function more like consultants.

As an architecture student, your career will most likely be influenced by how much salary you receive as an architectural professional. Depending on what field of architecture you are in, your pay can range from very low to extremely high.
Architects must have at least a bachelor’s degree to work in the profession. Beyond that, it depends on several other factors such as whether they are working for a large firm or solo.
Salaries also vary depending on where people think an appropriate price-point is for an architect’s services. Some areas consider architects professionals while others do not.
There are many different routes one can take to become an architect so although there isn’t necessarily a “average” salaried architect, statistics can help us understand some things about the career path we choose.

As we have discussed before, being an architect means designing buildings and landscapes, so one of the main responsibilities of architecture professionals is to be an engineer. An architectural professional can also design interior spaces or areas such as bathrooms or kitchens.
Engineering in the field of architecture includes studying materials (such as steel or glass) and concepts like geometry and proportion. These are applied to create aesthetically pleasing structures and environments.
Architects typically work under general contract for clients, and their contracts usually contain deadlines and milestones that they must meet. Architects may also coordinate with other architects, engineers, planners, and/or consultants to complete projects on time.
Salary potential for practicing architects varies widely depending on several factors, including what kind of practice you run, where you live, and whether you're working with or without pay.
But overall salary averages show that experienced architects make good money, especially if they run their own business.

As mentioned earlier, what is the average architectural salary varies greatly depending on which area of architecture you are in as well as if you are working for a firm or freelance.
In general most architects make around $80-100k per year with up to 20% of that going towards overhead costs such as employee benefits, professional dues etc.
