This quiz is about taking a closer look at how things work, and how different types of materials are used to make something work. It’s kind of like looking underneath the surface to see what makes a product function well. That internal structure or mechanism comes from engineering.
Engineers use systematic thinking to design products and systems
So why not apply that process to architecture? Why not take an in-depth look at how buildings work, and how they compare with natural settings?
There are many reasons! One being that architects already know quite a bit about how structures work. They have degree programs that teach them physics, mechanics, material science, and more.
Another reason is that engineers tend to focus on applications and uses for their designs, but there’s little emphasis on whether the designed object is “pretty.” (That is, aesthetically appealing.)
Yet another reason is that engineers typically think about mechanisms and structural strength in terms of pure math formulas. But people don’t always do exactly as math predictions tell them to be, so this may limit the applicability of their knowledge.
Systematic reasoning, however, takes into account human behavior.

The shape of an element affects how people interact with it. For example, if an object has a cone-shaped top, then people look up towards it more than they do for something that is flat or square shaped.
This effect is called entasis (derived from the Greek word meaning “incline”). An element with this quality creates perception of strength and stability because of the way the eye moves around the structure.
By having some kind of curvature to the surface, you create subconscious tension. It reminds the viewer there’s still resistance even though nothing seems flimsy or weak.
That’s why cones are used as roofs in buildings — they help give the feeling of safety and protection.
There’s also a reason why arches have become so popular as shapes for windows and doors: They let light stream into a space easily, creating natural illumination.
There are three main categories for building shape: geometric, Renaissance, and neoclassical. Geometric shapes include squares, triangles, and circles. A well-known example of this type of shape is the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., which has a square roof.
Renaissance styles have curved or sloping roofs that get longer as they rise. The famous Parthenon in Greece is an excellent example of this style.
Neoclassic architecture features strong vertical lines and columns with horizontal emphasis. Modern examples of this style can be seen in skyscrapers and museums with their flat roofs.
Topic and bullet point sequence: Roof Shape
Subtopic: Reasons why roofs are not always a good idea
Roofs work by letting hot air leak out and cool down, so they do not usually stay very warm themselves. It also takes lots of materials and construction time to complete a roof, making it expensive to build. This means most high rises do not have smooth, functioning cooling systems, so some overheating is expected.

Modern architectural styles can be categorized into one of three main groups: Neoclassical, Contemporary, and Futuristic. All three of these have their own defining characteristics that make them unique, but overall they share some similarities.
All three use strong lines and proportion to convey important messages about space and functionality. They also feature natural light as a major source of illumination in buildings.
Neo-classicism is typically characterized by large columns or balustrades with an emphasis on order and symmetry. This style was very popular during the Enlightenment Era when architects wanted to emphasize rationality over spirituality.
Contemporary architecture looks back at modernism as a form it has influenced. It features clean lines and shapes mixed together haphazardly.
Futurist architecture looks forward towards technology’s influence on our lives. Architectural forms become more abstract and fluid as time goes on.

While not all buildings are considered to be architectural, most people agree that our current understanding of what makes up an architect’s toolbox comes directly from the ancient Greeks. Before there were architects, there were builders — individuals who designed and constructed practical things like homes or temples.
Architecture actually dates back over 2,000 years in Greece. The word itself comes from the Greek words arkhē (ἀρχή) which means rule/governess and stoa (στοῦς) which means place or position. An archi- (ὖרκι-) tectonic (γαλоканьем)-builder constructs structures with rules he uses to design and organize space.
These rules include proportion, line direction, and mathematical calculations such as perimeters, area, and volume. Proportion refers to how much wider something is than it is tall, while area represents the size of a shape and perimeter is the length of edges. Volume is determined by adding together the areas of every part of a solid object.
The Ancient Greeks built using these principles, creating beautiful works of art and engineering. They also organized their buildings by color, making use of different materials and textures to create special effects. These designs still hold true today!
But you don’t have to take our word for it – look around you.

Some people consider Frank Lloyd Wright to be one of our greatest ever architects. He designed over 100 buildings, including churches, residences, and office spaces. His style is known for using organic shapes and materials in his designs.
He was very conscious about leaving space for nature and incorporating natural light into his projects. Many of his homes feature beautiful curved roofs that allow sunlight to stream in.
Another well-known architect who left an incredible legacy is Paulo Mendes da Rocha. Not only did he design many impressive looking skyscrapers, but he also made significant contributions to urban planning.
Leonardo Da Vinci lived from 1472 to 1519, which makes him approximately twenty years older than Wright! But whereas most people think of Leonardo as a painter, he actually designed everything from bridges to helicopters.
These three men all had their own unique styles, so it’s hard to tell what parts of their work look familiar to you. That said, if you have ever seen a building or a vehicle inspired by one of them, then you know someone paid close attention to their techniques.

Many people consider New York City’s Empire State Building to be one of the world’s most beautiful skyscrapers. It was designed by William A Cummings, and it features an interesting shape that has become iconic for the building type.
The triangular design allows light to bounce off the top of the structure, creating what is known as an “intensified silhouette.” This effect makes the tower seem much bigger than its actual size, giving it a majestic feel.
Another well-known architectural shape is the cone. The Chrysler Corporate Headquarters in Detroit is shaped like a thin, tall cylinder with a wide base. This creates a very spacious interior space, which is perfect for hosting meetings and events.
Somerville Town Hall in Somerville, Massachusetts is also shaped like a cone. Because cones get thinner towards the bottom, there is quite a bit of vertical movement when looking at the building from different angles. This gives the impression that the room is going up more quickly, making the space feel larger.
You may have heard of the pentagon before. Some say this shape represents the body or soul, while others believe it symbolizes growth. Either way, you will not find many examples of this classic figure!
Take some time to explore some of the surrounding areas around your current neighborhood to see if you can identify any familiar shapes.

Many people consider The Statue of Liberty to be one of the greatest works of art in our society, but how many know what it is? Most people have never heard of The Weeping Woman before today!
The Weeping Woman was designed by Edgar Degas and created in 1876. It is an oil painting of a nude woman with her hands covering her mouth as she weeps intensely. Her expression is very moving and striking.
She looks like someone who has just lost a loved one and will not stop mourning them for days or even weeks. You can tell that she cares about something deeply and cannot contain her grief.
This is a powerful work because it deals directly with human emotions – feelings that we all share at least once in our lives. Everyone experiences deep sorrow and loss, so this picture really hits home for most people.
Sculpture artists use materials and techniques to convey their message more clearly. In the case of The Weeping Woman, the artist used long, dripping lines to show how the woman’s tears kept flowing over her hand.
These repeated touches underline the importance of death in the painting and help us connect with the image and the mourned person. She represents anyone who has lost someone close to them, whether through death or separation.
That connection is important because it reminds us that no matter where we are in life, there will always be times when we feel sad or hurt.

One of the most recognizable artistic styles is called realism. This was an extremely popular style across all mediums, including painting, sculpture, and architecture. Some examples of realist art include The Scream by Edvard Munch or any representation of Jesus from the early Christian era to today.
Another very well known style is impressionism. Impressionists focused more on capturing light in nature and using bold colors to do so. Famous artists that practiced this technique include Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet.
Yet another style is called expressionism. Expressionists used strong colors and shapes to convey their emotions or messages. Artists such as Gustav Klimt or Wassily Kandinsky are great examples of expressionistic artwork.
Other important styles include neoclassic, which uses clean lines and classic themes; futurism, with its use of bright colors and elaborate designs; and surrealism, where dreams or fantasies become reality via illustrations or sculptures.
