How To Check Architecture In Linux

As we know, computer software is comprised of two major parts: applications and their supporting architecture. Applications are what you use everyday- they take up most of your time on your device, but there’s not much you can do about that unless you don’t like them!

Their supporting infrastructure or “underware” is just as important because it sets the stage for how well an app will work for you. If it doesn’t work properly, you won’t be able to use it efficiently which could potentially lead to wasted money and/or time.

That’s why it is very important to understand your software’s underlying structure and technology. You want to make sure that everything works smoothly and securely for you to use it effectively. This article will go over some tools to test and evaluate your software’s architectural quality.

These tests look at different aspects of the application, such as if it is compatible with our other apps, if it has been reported to have issues (negative feedback) by users, and whether it is free from malware. All of these things affect the overall experience that you get when using the app.

You should always strive to use apps that have undergone thorough testing and reviews so that you know that they will work for your needs and will still enjoy using them.

Look at the hard drive architecture

Hard drives are typically organized into two different types of architectures. These are called head-on or face-up and head-down or back-to-back configurations.

In a head-on configuration, there is a read/write head that moves across the surface of the disk slowly. This takes longer to complete its task due to the length of the disk it needs to travel. It also requires more time for the head to find where it left off when it was last there.

A head down configuration has the write head moving quickly over the surface of the disk as it writes data. The slowest part about this configuration is actually getting the other end of the cylinder closed so that writing can continue!

This is why it may take several minutes for your computer to respond after you press enter or click somewhere else while it’s working. Because it takes so long to get the other side of the platter open, computers with this type of setup will sometimes warn users by giving an error message saying that they have run out of space.

These errors are usually vague and difficult to decipher because most people don’t understand what a hard drive is really doing under the hood.

Look at the SSD architecture

Looking closer, you will see that there is an important component called firmware. This is what takes care of things like read/write caching, hardware encryption, etc. Most firmware these days is designed to be programmed via a microprocessor which allows it to have more functionality.

The best way to determine if your computer has solid state storage or not is to look for this firmware. The easiest way to do this is by looking at the motherboard components. If it says “TRANSLATOR” instead of “RAID CONTROLLER” then it has SSD firmware.

There are some really great tools out there that can test different attributes of hard drive and flash memory. For instance, I use DiskInfoPro to check my drives for errors, performance information, and compatibility.

Look at the memory architecture

Memory is an integral part of every computer, whether it’s making a movie or checking your email. It can be described as a way for your computer to store information (data). Most computers have enough memory that you could open up several windows and apps and still have room to spare.

Most people are familiar with RAM – random access memory. This is the memory that works with all types of computers and runs on electricity, so there isn’t too much description needed!

What most people don’t know is how different types of memories work under the hood. For example, we use a lot of non-volatile storage like hard drives and flash cards, but what these things actually are internally is binary data. That means they’re just patterns of 1’s and 0’s, not really anything more substantial.

The thing about binaries is that you can do something with them, and then you can make another copy and those two copies will be identical. In other words, if you have a file containing “Hello world,” then copying this file twice won’t change anything – it will always say the same thing.

That doesn’t quite hold true for software though.

Look at the BIOS architecture

One of the most important things you can check if your computer is not booting up or will not connect to WiFi, internet, or other devices is the motherboard’s internal architecture settings.

Computer hardware manufacturers create BIOS (basic input/output system) firmware that allows your computer to communicate with the various components inside it, such as the CPU, GPU, RAM, and hard drive.

This software also enables users to easily change certain aspects of the computer, like adding more memory, changing how many CPUs there are, etc.

It is very common for computer companies to release UEFI (Universal Extensible Firmware Interface) versions of this firmware which have improved features over earlier versions.

Look at the kernel architecture

The linux kernel comes with a number of built-in commands that help you identify different features of the operating system, as well as its assembly or internal structure. These include lspci for identifying connected devices such as laptops or televisions, lsusb for mobile phones and tablets, kconfig for looking into how the operating system is set up, make menuconfig for editing settings in the boot process, etc.

There are also some command line tools that allow you to look more closely at what parts of the OS are installed, which ones are taking up space, and other information about the computer. This includes df (for disk free space) gparted (for manipulating partitions), iftop (to see network traffic) nethogs (similar to top but only reports active processes using networking equipment), iostat (to check hard drive performance), and tmutil (for finding out about your GPU).

All these commands require that you enter the name of the tool correctly and use their appropriate parameters before getting results back, so do not skip over this step! Also remember to press “Enter” after typing in each parameter otherwise all the data will be lost.

Look at the software architecture

A good way to check if your computer has an architectural style is by looking at the software you use. If you see things like windows, menus, or buttons that have drop shadows, rounded corners, flat surfaces, and other effects, then this design approach has been adopted for the desktop environment used.

This looks very similar to the way professional graphic artists designed interfaces years ago! They would develop styles that are now considered classic interface layouts.

So what about macOS? Well, they took many of these concepts and applied them to their own unique style. Part of this was due to Apple’s famous marketing department, which promoted the look and feel of their operating system.

Another reason why macOS designs seem so familiar is because developers copied some of those ideas and incorporated them into their own style. For instance, the menu bar with its drop-down function is a popular concept that can be found almost anywhere you look.

However, not all features should be given credit for copying someone else’s idea. Sometimes, people come up with new ways to do something and get noticed for it.

Look at the database architecture

A very important part of software development is understanding how databases work, what types of databases exist, and which one you should use for your website or application.

Databases are a fundamental component of most large scale applications (think Facebook, Google, etc.). They allow users to store and retrieve information easily, and do it securely. Almost every web-based app out there uses a database of some kind to function.

It’s great being able to access our photos from anywhere, but this also makes them vulnerable to theft or corruption. Luckily, we can protect our data through different strategies. Software engineers who design good database apps know these protections well.

One such protection is called strong authentication. This allows people that have authenticated with your site to view and edit their data, but also requires they enter additional details into the system in order to do so. These details must be known before they can even attempt to log in!

Strong authentication is an essential tool in any developer’s arsenal. It helps prevent someone else from accessing your data, and gives you more security options when things go wrong.

Look at the website architecture

A few tools that can be used to check if there is an overall structure to how a site is organized are called “web archive” or “netarchive” tools. These include Archive-It, Netvizz, and Yandex.Metrica.

Archive-It is free to use but has limited functionality. You will have to pay $9 per month for extended access. This includes some basic information like page title and URL, along with domain name. Beyond this, you can view file size, referrer (where from your browser visited the link), HTTP headers such as content type, last modified time, etc.

You get even more detailed info by clicking ‘Show All’ under Headings. Here you can see things like

tags, image files (, , and ), CSS stylesheets, and JavaScripts. For each of these types of media, you can click through and read what it is and where it comes from.

This is very helpful when looking into whether or not a particular style was copied directly from another source or if something about the layout looks suspiciously similar to someone else’s design. It also helps determine just how much control the author had over their own sites by seeing if they saved copies of pages and documents as backups.
