How To Evaluate An Architect

As someone who has worked as both an architect and interior designer, I have learned a lot about designing spaces from watching others’ work and studying their styles. While some people are self-conscious about their artistic skills, it is important to feel comfortable in what you create.

As designers, we spend a large part of our career trying to inspire other people to construct designs of beautiful shapes and interesting textures. If this doesn’t happen naturally for you, that's okay! You don't need to be very good at drawing or painting to achieve this.

But if it does, then your talent will win more praise than criticism, especially as professional architects and interior designers. Your ability to envision and articulate space concepts makes you valuable, so learn how to evaluate architectural drawings and models effectively.

This article will talk about some things that may seem basic, but are still worth knowing when evaluating architectural design projects. We'll go over some general tips and tricks as well as discuss some questions to ask yourself and your potential employer about their project.

Pay attention to their work

It’s not enough to look at someone’s style or how they design buildings – you have to actually examine what they do.

It is difficult to tell whether an architect is good or bad as long as you don’t evaluate their talent by looking only at their pretty drawings, clothes, and hairstyles.

You have to assess if their designs make sense and are well thought out, if their ideas seem original and creative, and if they relate to things that are true and effective in the real world.

This will take more than just a few minutes of your time, it will take several hours every week for years until you get a clear picture of how competent this person really is.

Look at their design process

As someone who wants to work in this field, you need to make sure that they have a clear process for designing buildings. You should also look to see if there are examples of their designs in nature or elsewhere.

Architects must be able to explain how their ideas developed over time through different stages such as concept, plan, model, drawing, and then construction.

They must be able to back up all these steps with evidence including pictures and documents. This way, you can verify not only that they took the right amount of time to produce the final product, but also that they actually did take the necessary breaks while working on it.

There is no reason to hire anyone who cannot prove where they spent their time during the creative process.

Is the architect properly licensed?

As mentioned before, having an architectural license is not only important for you as a home buyer, but also for the architects themselves!

Most states require that every professional who practices architecture requires at least a bachelor’s degree in design or a master’s degree in planning or urban development. Some even require certification! After obtaining this education, most state licensing boards offer several courses designed to be very specific and practical about how to evaluate and assess the work of another architect.

These assessments are referred to as Competency Evaluation Tests (CET) and they look into many things such as whether or not their designs follow set standards, if there are signs of fraud or unethical behavior, and more. If an architect has no formal training or proof of licensure, it may signal potential issues for the homeowner.

Ask for references

It’s very important to verify that you are talking to someone with solid, reputable credentials. References are great way to do this as they show that people you trust have worked or connected with the person in question.

By asking directly about past projects, you can get some hard numbers about how successful their work has been and whether or not they received positive feedback. Or you could just ask if anyone ever gave them negative feedback!

In both cases, your reference checks should go beyond looking at portfolios and websites to determine what kind of people they are. it is also important to know whether or not they belong to professional associations or organizations. This would include things like the AIA, ASID, or NAA (if you’re looking into becoming an architect).

Lastly, you want to make sure that they fit together well. If one seems very cool and casual at first, chances are good that they don’t really work well with others. And while it may sound crazy, there are instances where an artist goes bankrupt and his or her colleagues take over management of their business.

Can you afford them?

Asking whether or not you can afford their services is one of the most important questions in your search for new architects. While it may sound cliché, having great architecture that fits your budget is still very possible!

You should always do your research and compare prices across different firms, but here are some tips to help you determine if this firm is within your financial range.

Does the architect have recent projects you could look into?

It’s impossible to tell how professional someone else’s work looks unless you’ve seen it before, so make sure to check out as many examples as possible by looking through their portfolios.

But don’t stop there! Make sure to also read reviews about past clients to get a sense of what people say about them.

Is the location good for you?

As we discussed, finding your next home should be a fun process that allows you to explore various options. But before jumping in, you must make sure your current residence is close to all of your important places and activities.

If it’s too expensive to keep your current house, then looking at different neighborhoods can help determine if another one is better. You want to look for open spaces, natural environment, and easy access to education, work, and entertainment.

Also, consider how well the neighborhood guards against crime. If possible, test out the area by walking around during night time hours.

When evaluating potential homes, don’t let cost play a big factor. Even though a house with lots of amenities may seem pricier than one without, down payments are typically much lower!

Another way to evaluate the importance of a place is to ask yourself whether or not you would feel comfortable being away from home for an extended period of time. For example, would you feel safe leaving your child with this house while you went shopping five blocks away?

If the answer is yes, then they’re probably appropriate for children. On the other hand, if you wouldn’t feel confident leaving your kid there, then they might not be the best choice.

Can you get a good feel for their personality?

A lot of people talk about how important it is to know what kind of architect you are drawn to, but actually finding someone you like more than everyone else is tricky.

It’s hard to tell if that person likes you because they think you’re smart or if they just want your money!

So, how can you evaluate whether an architect seems like a genuinely nice person or if they seem too friendly for no reason? Here are some tips.

Does he/she make sense when talking to you?

This doesn’t mean saying only things that you agree with, but being able to speak openly about ideas without getting distracted by trivial topics. You should be able to have conversations where you disagree and still leave feeling good about yourself.

If you ever find that the conversation is starting to take a weird turn, stop having it. This could be due to something you said, something he/ she said, or both.

Is he/ she self-confident?

A confident person will not need constant praise from others to believe in themselves. They may even go out of their way to show off their skills to prove that they do not depend on anyone else for recognition.

They are also likely to put in more effort into achieving their goals than someone who needs extra help to succeed.

He/She does not hesitate when asked questions.

Is there a team?

Asking about opportunities after being let go can be tricky, so it is important to understand if they are trying to build up their team or looking to start new ones. If they seem more concerned with getting through the day than building relationships, chances are you’ll not see yourself back in this person’s office very soon.

The architect of your career will have significant influence over how your career progresses, which makes it essential to invest time into people that care about them. An architect who doesn’t take pride in his work isn’t going to inspire confidence when presenting ideas to other professionals.

If someone seems distracted by all the things they have to do instead of focusing on creating great designs, then they might need help finding motivation. A professional who can’tdesire what he does may want to change that, at least for now.

It’s also worth noting that most architects enjoy designing buildings, but few feel passionate about business related aspects like marketing or promoting themselves. These are crucial parts of any successful project.

A good way to determine whether an individual has a passion for their field is to observe how invested they become during conversations.
