How to Find your Art Style

This article will explain how to find your art style and get it right.

You can build on this experience as you play further and see how you can combine different features with different art styles.

Artists often know exactly what type of paintings they want to do in their mind, even before they begin to draw. However, there are many things that can go wrong when a person tries to actually put that idea on the canvas.

If you want to succeed as an artist, you need to learn to face your fears. If you are not an artist, this can be very difficult because you don’t have the background to understand the process of how artists make their works.

Here is how to find your art style and discover what works for you, step by step.

Look for classic signs of personality in the art

How to Find your Art Style

The starting point for determining an artist’s style is to consider the classic aspects of their work.

The simplest way to do this is to look at their art in isolation – that is, don’t look at other pieces of work by the same artist.

Study the greats

Let’s take Roy Lichtenstein’s work to illustrate the point. When I look at this painting, I’m seeing a unique style work reflected in it. This is because it combines elements of pop art with concepts from abstract expressionism.

Notice how his use of color has echoes of Andy Warhol’s use of colour.

Pablo Picasso is well-known for his use of bright, bold colours and structures of cartoon shapes in his paintings.

As I looked at his art, I began to get the feeling that I’d seen much of this work before. I was thinking of writers and poets, and musicians who I’ve listened to.

Of course, I hadn’t consciously recognized the connections. This happens automatically. Inevitably, my subconscious associates one artist’s work with others. When I see a painting by one artist, it’s really a sign that I’ve seen work by another artist, somewhere.

This discovery gave me confidence that I could create my own work, even if I didn’t know an artist.

Concentrate on one aspect, and develop it

How to Find your Art Style

You can try a slightly different approach. Instead of looking at work alone, take a photo of something you like and write down the colours and shapes that you see.

Then look at the written list and see if you see anything similar. If you see anything, you’ve probably seen their work and created your own style in the process.

Art is a personal thing. The person who made it is most likely not aware of how their art has influenced you.

A painting made by a person for whom art is their vocation is much more likely to be considered the artist’s own work than one made by an artist for whom art is a hobby.

Try not to pick up the styles of other artists

It’s tempting to mimic the style of other artists. After all, they’ve set an excellent example.

The problem is that you end up creating the impression that the artist was a genius, and it makes it difficult to stand out.

It’s also important not to copy their work wholesale. Look for elements that you can use to create your own style.

For instance, look at a landscape by Monet and think about how you might use his colours to create your own landscape.

Another approach is to ask yourself questions. Ask yourself how the artist achieved a particular effect. If the answer is straightforward, then avoid copying them.
