How To Get A Graphic Design Job Without Experience

This article will discuss how to get a graphic design job without experience.

It is not an easy road for you, as not everyone is ready to jump into the world of graphic design and ready to work for free. However, we hope you will be inspired and will be successful at getting your foot in the door.

This is very possible as you have experience as a designer in other forms, such as photography, design software, etc.

Since you do not have experience, it is important to show that you know how to work with clients, how to communicate effectively and how to work with a team. When you send in your portfolio, include the following information:

  • A few works, from web design to commercial printing
  • Showing what you have done for previous clients
  • Information about yourself

You should be able to include a link to your website as well. It will provide additional information about who you are and what you do.

Designers that use portfolios, and are able to show us how they work, are more likely to get a job.

What to do after you put together your portfolio?

While the last step to being hired is getting your foot in the door, there is a lot that happens before this happens. The first thing you need to do is fill out an application. All that you need to fill out is your name and contact information, and your company information.

After you send in your application, you will be contacted for an interview. When you arrive for the interview, you will be given a list of potential projects and you can choose what you want to do next. You are not required to do the assignments given to you, but you may be.

Steps:

1. Start networking – This is something that takes time.

Once you have a few clients that you’re working with, you need to start making a name for yourself. This means getting out there and meeting as many people as you can.

If you want to make a career out of graphic design, you’ll have to network. And yes, I did just say that you’ll have to network.

I hear many designers state that they are “workaholics” but this is a career where you’re always working. You can’t be out partying all the time and expect to get results.

2. Get Professional Computer Software – Graphic Design is a great field for those who have a knowledge of computers.

And if you don’t have a lot of computer knowledge, it’s important that you get professional software to help you get a leg up.

Some things you might want to consider for this include Adobe CS4 and CS5.

3. Take on Some Graphic Design Projects – Taking on a few graphic design projects is an excellent way to get a feel for the design field.

Look at designs for products that you’d be interested in designing.

Look at what other companies are doing and see if you can add a new feature to their design or bring in a new design direction.

The goal is to see what types of graphic design you are good at and to experience the “drawing the lines” part of the design process.

4. Start doing Photoshop Work – If you’re reading this article, you probably have Photoshop.

Use Photoshop to edit some of your Photoshop mockups.

If you work with Photoshop, then you’ll need to know how to use it. And if you don’t have a lot of experience, then you need to start learning.

What will you learn about Photoshop?

  • Layout – a great way to customize your designs
  • InDesign – A graphics design and layout program
  • Colors
  • Drawing – Color schemes, curves and paths
  • Text – Consistency, coloring, typography
  • Editing – Zoom, lock, undo, red eye removal
  • Blending modes – Lighten/darken, scale, color sliders

If you don’t have a lot of experience, then you’ll need to start working on Photoshop projects as a way to practice.

5. Create Tutorials – This is a good way to see what your peers are creating and what they’re creating their designs with.

You could do it for fun, you could do it as a class assignment or you could do it for money.

If you do the latter, you’ll want to try and make a profit.

Go to YouTube and search for graphic design tutorials. I’ve found several great tutorials that will help you learn the ropes.

I usually start my tutorials by answering the question: “Why should I do this tutorial?” Then I give a quick introduction to graphic design before I get to the point of the tutorial.

When I have a tutorial up, I usually make a video of it. It’s much more interesting and entertaining to watch something that you created yourself.

After a tutorial is finished, I will link the video back to the YouTube page for the tutorial so that others can go check it out.

You could also add a link on your portfolio site or you could even email the tutorial link to potential clients.

Your video tutorials might end up being part of a video series that you produce.
