How To Make an Architect Portfolio

Creating an architectural portfolio is more than just including lots of pictures, it’s about telling your story! Yours is unique so make sure you use that strength to strengthen yours.

You are always in control when creating and editing your own content, so try to be creative with what you include in your pieces and how you present yourself.

It will not only help you get new jobs but also promote your personal brand. You can even create engaging diy projects or examples of your work that relate to the design industry!

At the same time, don’t feel like you have to include everything in your portfolio. What makes sense for you may not make sense for someone else.

Your style should match who you are as a person and what types of clients you want to impress.

Narrow down your portfolio to the best projects

Even though it is great to have a wide array of portfolios, you do not need every project in this world! If you feel that your audience will get distracted by all those pictures, then stick to only your finest work.

Your ideal portfolio should be focused and concise. You want your viewers to enjoy looking through your photos and getting some inspiration, but you also don’t want them to look beyond the boundaries of your design sense or creative talent.

Projects with beautiful, intricate designs that are well-compensated for are excellent candidates for inclusion into your architectural portfolio. Whether they are yours or not is another story!

The hard truth about architectural photography is that most styles and techniques can easily be found online and/or within free resources such as Google and Flickr. I know from experience because I had to give up my dream of being an architect due to lack of funding!

If you are struggling to choose which projects to include in your architectural photo portfolio, try asking yourself what types of images you like and how to achieve those looks.

Organize your portfolio

After you have gathered all of your design work, it is time to organize and display it! While some may suggest starting with the most recent projects and working your way backwards, I would like to recommend an opposite approach.

Start by looking back at your past work and organizing it by project or area of service. This will give you a better understanding of how well you coordinate with others and what areas of the market you already cover. It also helps in creating consistency as everything seems to match together.

Once that is done, start thinking about the future! What are your goals? Do you want to keep designing for companies, or do you dream of launching your own business? Creating a portfolio that highlights your skills and positions yourself for success can help you get there!

This article has discussed different ways to organize and showcase your architectural designs. Hopefully you took something away from this and put in some effort into developing yours.

Update your website

It’s very common for people to put off updating their personal websites or creating an architectural portfolio until they have “more money” or “better skills”. This isn’t a good way to position yourself as an architect!

If you’re struggling to find inspiration, start from somewhere that makes you happy and use it as a basis. Use smartly-summarized notes or posts as starting points to help you develop yours.

Once you’ve got the basics in place, add some decoration and blend in some of your own styles to make it your own.

You can also add links to other architects’ work or interesting topics related to architecture to give your audience more resources.

Lastly, make sure to update your website regularly – at least once per month is ideal.

Practice creating your portfolio

After you have gathered all of your resources, it is time to start organizing them into something that people can easily access and view. If you are very organized, you may create an album on social media or use an online portfolio website to store your designs.

Alternatively, you could organize your materials by color scheme or type of project (office interior design, house renovation, etc.). Whatever system works for you will determine how your portfolio looks.

Whatever method you choose to do, make sure it is one where people can see each item clearly and efficiently. You want to focus more on enhancing your talent as an architect rather than trying to find a way to pack in lots of images!

General tips: Use at least 500 pixels width per image for better viewing quality. Avoid having too many small pictures, they look bad.

Create different layouts of your portfolio

After you have gathered all of your assets, it is time to organize them! While some people may suggest using an index card or notebook system to catalogue your work, I do not recommend this approach.

There are many ways to take pictures and video footage of your projects, so why should you choose one photo over another? Why should you edit one picture more than another? These questions cannot be answered unless you have access to all of the materials yourself!

By organizing your materials after they are taken, you will lose out on important information. For example, if you took several photographs of a house project before and after, then what purpose would editing one photograph serve?

You get no sense of consistency from these images because there is none! If you wanted to compare how well light hits the windows in each shot, for instance, then you would have to search through all of the photos looking for that information. It goes without saying that this is not ideal.

The best way to avoid having to go through multiple versions of files and photos is to use an easy-to-access organization method. By creating separate folders and filing the material within those categories, you will know exactly where everything is!

This will make finding a specific piece much faster since you can quickly scan through all of the files and see if what you want exists.

Offer a variety of designs

A well designed architectural portfolio should have several different styles that show off your artistic ability, not all of which need be professional! If you are very creative, design some non-commercial projects such as flyers or logos for companies, then include those in your portfolio.

Designing for businesses can sometimes give you great inspiration since they spend lots of money, so including examples of business graphics or even just simple advertisements can get new ideas from more formal projects.

Architectural renderings and sketches are also good sources of material if you know how to draw them properly. Creating pictures using Photoshop or other similar software is way better than doing it with pencils and paper.

You could create a slideshow or video out of these materials to showcase them more in depth.

Personalize your portfolio

Even if you’re just starting out, it is not too early to begin creating your architectural body of work. Starting from somewhere neutral can help you gain some momentum as you grow in this field.

If you have already created an architect profile, then you know what we are talking about! Now that you have done that, it is time to personalize it or add content to make it more interesting.

Add pictures or videos to show off examples of your work. Include details such as project names, locations, and descriptions for each image or video.

You do not need to include every single job in your career, but thinking back on past projects will bring many new ideas for things to include in yours.

Try looking into free website generators to find something easy to use to edit and create your own pages. Many sites offer basic platforms with all of the features built-in like YouTubers and others may suggest other ones to choose from.

Tell your story

After creating your profile, it’s time to start thinking about how you want people to perceive you as an architect. This means telling your architectural story!

You can tell yours through writing or by speaking about projects you have designed, areas of specialization such as sustainable design, or even experiences like designing mobile apps. Whatever format works for you, the way to get people to believe in you is to be honest and consistent!

By being straightforward with what you offer and who you serve, there are many ways to showcase your talents as an architect. It may also inspire other architects out there to pick up new tricks or develop their own style.

Another way to do this is to create engaging content that sets yourself apart from others. An easy way to do this is by posting pictures and videos of recent projects you have done.
