How To Make an Architect Portfolio

When it comes to creating an architectural portfolio, there are several ways you can go about it. Some do it as a self-representation piece or as if they were working for a firm at the time of submission. Either way, this is not ideal because it may not be professional nor reflective of what you really want to convey to future employers.

As professionals in our field, we need to emphasize quality over quantity when looking to showcase our work. It will more likely look unkempt than polished. We must remain consistent with our style, value, and attention to detail to retain credibility.

This article will talk about some easy ways to create your own architectural portfolio that fits you and your career goals. These tips will be cost effective and simple to follow.

Prepare a marketing plan

After you have created your architecture portfolio, it is time to prepare for its launch! When preparing your portfolio for the first time, make sure that everything looks professional and neat.

You do not want your potential employers to see anything that does not look good because this will send a bad message about you as an artist. Make sure to organize all of your designs into different categories or groups to keep things clean and coherent.

Also, be careful how many times you edit your designs before sharing them with people. Only update your design once it is very close to what it is supposed to look like! This helps prevent over editing, which can sometimes take more than expected to achieve.

After designing your initial set of covers, think about where others has done similar work and use that information to strengthen yours.

Choose a location

After deciding what types of buildings you like and how to budget for your dream house, now is the time to choose where to do your architecture portfolio!

There are many great locations that can be used as an artistic setting for your career. Choosing a place that fits your lifestyle will make it more accessible to perform tasks outside of work hours.

Make sure to consider cost-effectiveness of transportation, if this is going to be your only option. Also look into whether or not the area has large groups of people around so that you don’t feel lonely while performing acts such as taking pictures or writing down designs.

We recommend trying out different areas to see which one feels most comfortable to you in order to find the perfect match.

Choose a design approach

The second way to develop your architecture portfolio is to choose one type of project or area of projects and to keep practicing more of that. For example, if you are very comfortable designing hospitals, do at least two outside designs per style to show how well you can apply this style in other settings.

Alternatively, pick an outdoor theme such as houses or landscapes and create several examples of that. Or maybe choosing fashion as a topic! If there’s ever a big event like a marathon, art fair, or national holiday, then creating a florida house, an egyptian pyramid, and an italian villa would be perfect.

This could also include picking a technology and producing some prototypes or illustrations- anything related to software or engineering.

Choose your team

As we have discussed, having an architectural portfolio is great way to promote yourself as an architect, but it is not enough if you do not have the right team supporting you. If you are too busy developing your career, then creating an architecture portfolio may be out of reach at this time in yours life.

That is totally fine! You do not need to have a professional looking portfolio all the time. We mentioned before that posting pictures online can help your career, so why not start gathering some pictures now? Take some good quality photos of you working on projects or studying materials- those will definitely get seen.

If you are more artistic, take some self portraits or creative photographs to show off your skills. The important thing is to include yourself in the picture with lots of interesting angles and natural light.

Try to take around ten different ones for our article today! Now, these should be your own work or material given permission to use. Original works are better because they clearly belong to you!

After taking the photo, edit them slightly (cropping, color balance) and compile everything into one nice image using free software such as Photoshop or Gimp. Your email, phone number, and website content should also look consistent across all devices, sites, and programs.

This takes no longer than half an hour to create, and is a simple way to begin promoting yourself as an artist.

Know your clients

As we mentioned before, creating an architectural portfolio is not just about picking pretty pictures or types of projects – it’s also about knowing who to market them to!

Your client may want something that looks very flashy, but if they don’t know what they want, you can’t create it for them. You will lose out on potential work this way so make sure you are clearly defining the project goals and brainstorming ways to achieve those with professional quality designs.

Likewise, you need to be clear about how much money you have available to spend. If you overspend due to poor budget planning, your reputation as a cost-effective designer could suffer negatively!

Planning ahead and being aware of both your resources and spending limits will help prevent this from happening. Check out our tips here for more tricks to keep in mind when marketing your services.

When it comes to creating your own architectural style, you can start by looking at buildings that you love and learn from their styles.

Many famous architects built their style upon something pre-existing, whether it was classic Greek or Roman shapes, natural forms such as curves and triangles, or strong geometric patterns.

Know your budget

When it comes to investing in your career, there are two main things to keep in mind. The first is how much money you have and the second is what kind of return on investment (ROI) you want from this investment.

As we discussed before, being able to showcase your skills through an architectural portfolio is one of the most effective ways to increase your marketability as an architect.

But before you start creating yours, you need to make sure that you know what tools people use to evaluate an architectural portfolio.

And while some may feel like they’re free or even paid resources, not all of them are worth their price.

In fact, some can cost you more than what you would pay for professional help!

That’s why in this article I will be talking about some tips and tricks for developing your architectural talent and showcasing it via an architectural portfolio.

From Photoshop designs to floor plans, here are 10 types of design projects anyone with a creative bone in their body should have.

#1 Abstract Designs

Abstract designs refer to designs that seem to describe something but really mean nothing. A popular example of this is the circle shape logos that many companies use.

These logos usually represent something vague such as “circle of friends” or “confidence”, making it hard to relate to them.

Produce a great portfolio

After creating your profile, it’s time to start thinking about how you will showcase your architectural skills. An easy way to do this is by producing an engaging architectural portrait or studio tour.

These artistic pictures are usually of a room or area that someone designed or created as part of their job. They are typically set up in a natural light setting with some props or decorations added.

If you're already able to design buildings then use those! But if you’re not, don't worry! There are many free online resources available where you can learn basic concepts like designing rooms, picking colors, and putting together scenes.

Once you have mastered those basics, you can begin exploring other types of portraits. For example, creative ways to take pictures of skyscrapers, bridges, or landscapes.

Your audience doesn’t want to see boring, plain photos; there should be at least one photo containing some sort of unique element — something beyond just walls and roofs.
