When talking about architecture, how you say its name is important. An easy way to remember it is “the study of designing buildings” but some people may get confused because they think that architect means someone who designs houses.
That’s not what the word actually means! That use of the term has become obsolete in common usage.
These days, an architect isn’t just someone with a degree in art or design who can draw pretty pictures of houses, he or she is a professional expert in planning and developing large-scale projects such as hospitals, shopping centers, or even skyscrapers.
It is quite difficult to be called an architect if you don’t have at least a bachelor’s degree in the field, but most architects have at least one graduate degree (masters or Phd). Beyond that, anyone can contribute to the work of an architect by doing things like drafting architectural plans or interior designing.
I will talk more about what being an architect really means later on in this article, but for now just make sure you are very clear when using the word.

The term ‘architecture’ comes from the Ancient Greek word arkhe, which means leader or ruler. In ancient Greece, architecture was considered to be an art form that involved careful planning of space and construction.
Architects designed buildings and landscapes by applying concepts such as proportion, symmetry, and mathematical logic. These proportions are what give an architectural design its shape and style, but they also have practical functions — for example, making it more efficient use of space.
Imagination is another important part of being an architect. An architect must think about how things should look and function, as well as where everything should go in relation to other things. This includes thinking about how people move around spaces and how people use products.
You can probably tell already my opinion about this! I love looking at designs and trying to figure out how they work, and then incorporating those ideas into new projects.

As mentioned before, knowing how to pronounce architecture is important. If you are not sure if your pronunciation is right, then look surrounding yourself with beautiful architectural designs or watch YouTube videos of architects talking about their fields.
Architecture seems like it would be easy to understand since most people have an intuitive understanding of what shapes are and what colors go well together. But actually being an architect can take several years to achieve due to the nature of the field.
It takes many different things to become an architect – degree programs that do not necessarily require any formal education in design but rather business knowledge, employment as an apprentice under someone who already practices, and immersion into the field through courses and seminars.

We live in an architectural era, where almost every structure you see was designed and built by someone with a degree or certification in design. Architects are professionals who create buildings through the use of concepts of shape, proportion, color, and style. They also coordinate all building materials used to produce the structure.
But what most people don’t know is that not everyone calls themselves an architect! In fact, there isn’t even a national professional organization for architects until relatively recently.
Until 1978, when the International Union of Architects (IAU) was formed, there were no universally accepted rules about how to call yourself an “architect.” Some countries didn’t have any official requirements for practicing as an architect, so they allowed anyone to go ahead and claim it. Others only let professionally trained architects practice, which meant that unless you had your license, you weren’t able to put “architect” next to your name.
In America, things got slightly more rigorous in 1994, when the American Institute of Architectural Sciences (AIANAS) was established as a non-profit making recommendations regarding what should be considered a graduate level education program for aspiring architects. Since then, anyone can say they are an architect if they have completed this formal educational process and been officially recognized as such.

When talking about architecture, what people use to describe it as mostly depends on how you pronounce its main component- space.
The word “space” is spelled differently depending on whether it comes from the sounds of “space” or “place.” If it comes from the sound of “space,” then it is pronounced like the noun “spa.” For example, imagine dropping “the spa” onto the street and seeing if anyone could say what country it was for.
If it comes from the sound of “place,” then it is usually said like the word “place.” For instance, if we were to repeat our earlier sentence but remove the last two words, it would read: "Dropping place"
Most people confuse the both of these because they are used almost simultaneously in architectural vocabulary. Since they are mixed together so much, most people learn to just say that spaces belong to architects and not worry too much about how to say it.
However, this can be very confusing when listening to others talk about architecture.

There are many ways to pronounce architecture, so there is no wrong way to say it! Some of the most common ways include (kuh-NORE-ik as in “nourish” or “naive”) and (-GERUH as in “bear”).
The -GEER comes from the German word Architekt, which means architect. So that would be the correct way to say it if you were a native speaker!
Some people drop the last syllable entirely, making it like the English word “architecture.” This is not correct because it does not match the original spelling nor sound out properly.
So, try using a thesaurus to look up the meaning and pronunciation for the term before writing your own.

The best way to pronounce architecture is by using a dictionary! If you are having trouble, look up your closest pronunciation of the word in this dictionary.
Architecture is such a beautiful language that even its own native speaker can vary slightly. It was not until the 19th century that “architekt” became the standard way to say the word. Before then, it was either spelled as “ars archi-tecta” or just “arhichi-teckta.”
Now that we have our hands on the true definition, let us compare both versions!
The -kta ending comes from the Latin root ars which means ‘art.’ This makes sense because an architect is someone who creates art – buildings!
But what about the -t? Many think that this is simply replacing the k with a t, but it is not. In fact, some dictionaries do not include the t at all!
Instead, they only have arhtictec which does not sound very close to the original. Let me show you why!
Take the word ‘theft.’ We know how to spell it and most people know how to say it, too. But when there is a missing t, it sounds different than when there is one!
Without the t, it does not fully sound like the verb steal.

There are many ways to pronounce architecture, so there is no one right way to say it. Some say it like “arch-ee-gee” with a soft g, while others drop the e and instead sound out the word as if it were spelled archie or archie.
Some even mix it up and don’t seem to have a standard way to say it!
What isn’t really discussed much though is how different people say it in relation to the origin of the term. Many say it as ‘ahrk-jay’, which was actually the way Thomas Jefferson pronounced it back when he worked as a architect for William Lee in Virginia in the early 19th century.
However, today most agree that it originated from the Ancient Greeks, where they would say 'arkheus'. This is why some say it's more properly referred to as archaeo-geese since it comes from ancient Greece.
