When people say they want to be an architect, there are two ways to pronounce this word. One is as a noun with a silent “a” (architect). The other is as a verb that includes the sound of the letter “r” (ar-chit-geer).
The truth is, most architects can barely tell you how to properly say their profession!
Many make the mistake thinking it sounds like archery or shooter. This isn't true though because it doesn’t have the same rhythm and tone. Also, it's not really related to building design.
I know it may seem trivial but it actually creates confusion for some students. I've even seen teachers write off such mispronunciations as no importance.
It takes around five minutes to learn how to correctly say architecture so why waste your time teaching something that has little value? It will take you less than a minute to fix your speech pattern though, so let me save you the trouble.
I'll also include some interesting facts about the origins of the term in case you wanted to add some context. All of these prove how important it is to know how to say architecture correctly.
Hopefully you now feel more confident when talking about architecture and the role it plays in our daily lives.

So, what is architectural style? Architectural styles are categorized into three main groups: classical, modern, and contemporary.
Classical refers to buildings that use classic proportions and shapes. An example of this would be looking at the Parthenon in Greece or The Roman Empire in Rome. These are called geometric styles because they rely heavily on strong lines and patterns.
Geometric designs can look very pretty but also have something more going for it – emphasis on strength and power. Classical styles typically emphasize solidity and stability.
Modern styles originated during the Renaissance when humans began exploring new ways to express themselves through art. Artists explored new mediums like painting with bold colors and fluid strokes, sculpting works such as The Thinker by Michelangelo, and designing houses using clean, simple lines and proportion.
Contemporary styles emerged after World War II when architects were experimenting with different materials and shaping concepts. Some examples of these include glass and steel skyscrapers, which we still see today.
It’s important to know the differences between each style before you start design projects, especially if you want to stick to one particular style.

The word ‘architect’ comes from the Ancient Greek words arkhē (ἀρχή) and therapeutikos (τρεπτος). Arkhē means ruler or leader, while therapeutikos refers to one who practices medicine or surgery.
Architecture is the practice of designing and constructing buildings and urban spaces according to set rules and regulations. Architects use mathematical formulas, geometry, physics, psychology, and sociology to achieve their goal which is to create aesthetically pleasing designs that are functional and meaningful.
The term architect was originally reserved only for people with college degrees in design but has now been extended to anyone with creative talent who can show an understanding of architectural principles. Some have even referred to all those who actively involved in creating and shaping our built environment as architects!
Key terms: under-girding, axial line, centering
These three concepts relate directly to how we speak about the structure, function, and placement of buildings and cities. When talking about the structure of anything, you would say its underlying principle, what it is designed to do, or what it serves.
An example of this is the basic premise behind most cars: go fast. This car is designed to get you where you need to be as quickly as possible because it will never slow down or stop completely! Therefore, speed is its main purpose or function.

Like most fields, architects have their roots in tradition. Early civilizations built out of need – to house their deities, for example, or as a symbol of power. As they grew in strength, however, their needs changed- from creating sacred spaces to ensuring that food was available during times of drought!
Architecture thus evolved into something more than just decoration. It is an integral part of every culture’s philosophy of life, and we can see this throughout history. For instance, look at how the Romans used structure and space to inspire awe and respect.
The Parthenon in Athens is a perfect example — it embodies the ideals of Ancient Greece, which focused on balance, harmony, and unity. The rounded shape represents perfection, while the vertical lines represent stability and strength.
These qualities apply directly to the design of the temple. They are also reflected in the way the people who lived there interacted with each other. Politics were left outside the building, for example.
Another important concept in ancient cultures was mythology. Different buildings incorporated myths and stories to convey meaning. Many refer to the sun god as the “heir to immortality,” for example.
When you consider a well designed building as a metaphor for death, it becomes clear why some religions require burial after cremation. This applies not only to individual structures, but to entire cities as well.

Ancient architects built some incredible structures, which have left their mark on our culture even today. People often refer to these buildings as monuments or statues because they are so inspired by them.
Architecture was integral to the cultures of many nations. It is impossible to talk about famous architecture without talking about various designs and how well they were constructed.
Ancient civilizations such as those in Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, and Turkey all had prominent architectural styles that remain in use today. Some of these include the Greek temple, Roman basilica, Persian shahnai, Chinese courtyard, Indian palace, and turban shape for roofs.
These types of architectures were typically structured around a central axis, with separate rooms coming off of it.
During this period, architects began developing what would come to be known as the Renaissance style. This style is characterized by large domed roofs, tall spires, elaborate decoration, and proportionally sized buildings with emphasis placed on natural light and space.
The most well-known architect of the Renaissance style was probably Leonardo da Vinci. He designed many structures that have influenced later styles such as Neoclassical and Art Deco. His contemporaries included Michelangelo who designed The Vatican and Bramante who constructed St Peter’s Cathedral in Rome.
These three men all trained under the Italian artist and theorist Giovanbattista Vignola. According to an article written about him, he “advocated strong horizontal lines for structural strength, vertical lines representing stability and order, and rounded forms evoking tranquility.

During this period, architects began exploring new styles that would eventually be categorized as baroque. These designs were characterized by lavish decoration and dramatic emphasizing of shape. Buildings would frequently feature large sculptures or decorations, ornate shapes, and powerful lines.
Architects during this time also experimented with proportion and balance, creating elaborate structures that seem out of place in our modern world. For example, the famed Roman architect Vignola designed The Theater of Marcellus which features an extremely long front facade made up almost entirely of massive columns.
These types of buildings contributed greatly to architectural beauty, but they are less common now due to their excessive cost.

Like most languages, the language of art is very fluid. What style someone uses comes down to personal preference and what vocabulary they have access to. The terminology for art depends on who created the piece and what era it belongs to!
Architecture is no different. Different countries use different terms to describe the same thing. This can be confusing as well because some terms may sound similar to each other but mean something totally different.
This article will go into detail about one of the most common types of architectural design – that of the Roman Empire. It was once considered the highest form of artistic expression and has left its mark on many cultures around the world. Let’s take a look at their famous landmarks!
The term ‘Romanesque’ comes from the Latin word romanesco which means red-faced or resembling a person with a red face. These buildings are characterized by heavy vertical lines, proportionally large windows, rounded arches, and stone construction.
They flourished between 1000 and 1500 AD during the Romano-Gallic period when Rome had just begun expanding across Europe. Many believe this style influenced Gothic architecture later in the Middle Ages.
Some examples of these built environments include churches, cathedrals, castles, and imperial palaces. Examples in America include Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, and the United States Supreme Court Building in Washington D.C.

Like many languages, the language of art is constantly changing. What style people use to create artistic works comes down to how they perceive beauty and what materials appeal to them. In the case of architects, it’s their use of shapes, decorations, and textures that make up their creations that determine which style they choose.
One architectural style that has become very popular in Europe is called Neofunctionalism or sometimes referred to as New Functionalism. This term was coined back in the 1980s by journalist Jan Vermeulen. He described this style as “architecture for living in open spaces.”[1]
Neo-functional buildings are typically categorized as either residential or commercial. They are usually shaped like cubes with rounded corners or spheres with squared off edges. The size and shape of these rooms are important parts of the design.
What makes Neo-Functional designs unique is their emphasis on functionality. These roofs and walls have purpose and utility. For example, one can sit outside and enjoy the weather under these covers. Or you can work inside the space and it will still feel comfortable and cozy.
These types of roofs and walls are also designed to be energy efficient so users do not need to worry about money spent on power bills every time it starts raining. Some even have green features such as photovoltaic panels!
Architectural styles always convey a message.
