As with any skill, architecture is not easily learned when you’re just looking to learn it. You have to be willing to put in time into it, which means having enough time to devote to practicing your skills.

Furthermore, even once you are able to construct some basic ideas of what an architect does, like defining a function or understanding the importance of space, there are no formal courses that teach you how to become one.

So if you want to pursue this career path, you will need to find ways to educate yourself about the field. There are many ways to do so. Some are more direct routes than others.

Direct routes include taking classes at a university or vocational school, talking to architects, and reading books written by professionals. All of these can help you get started towards becoming an architect!

Indirect routes include listening to podcasts, watching documentaries, and studying art. These all contribute to educating yourself about the field, too.

This article will go over several indirect ways to learn about architecture. Many of them are free, easy to access, and do not require special equipment or courses.

Decide what you need in your office

A little reminder: Before you even think about how to architecture, you first have to figure out what kind of architect you want to be!

I’m talking about it here as an important part of why there is no universal “architect style.” There are some general concepts that all architects share (like using math to help create spaces), but beyond that we really get into individual styles depending on who you are as an architect and what types of buildings you like to design.

Decide what you need on your team

As mentioned earlier, not every company needs an architect on staff. For example, startups may start off without one, but as their business grows they can begin looking into having one. However, even large companies that are run by professionals can be shorted of an architect position.

For these types of companies, there must exist someone who understands how to design buildings. This person is able to envision different structures and apply appropriate rules to determine if such a building should be built or not.

This individual also has knowledge about all materials used in construction, and knows how to use them effectively. They are familiar with tools and techniques for constructing things, like using power drills instead of hand-held ones.

Consider your space to time ratio

A common beginner mistake is trying to do too much with their house. They may try to add onto their home as aggressively as possible, or they could be running up monthly mortgage payments due to all of the room they want to use for something.

The trick is to consider your space to time ratio. This means figuring out how much time you have in each area of your life and then making sure that you have enough space for those times.

For example, if you have an office that you use for work every day, you will need more open space than someone who works from home most days.

Choosing an architectural software program is like choosing new furniture for your home or office. You want to make sure you pick one that will help you achieve your goals and give you the most flexibility.

There are many free programs available, but these may not offer all of the features needed to produce high quality work. If you plan to start practicing architecture soon, then it’s better to choose a less expensive option now than find yourself having to upgrade later.

Many students begin using professional grade software such as Autodesk Inventor, Sketch-Up or ArchiCAD after they graduate, so picking one with good reviews can save you lots of money in future!

These three apps have been around for a while and are considered industry standards, which means there are plenty of resources online and through word of mouth for them. All three allow you to create 2D and 3D drawings, coordinate calculations and mathematical formulas, and much more. They also all come with free trial versions, so you could use those to see if they fit your needs before investing in the paid version.

Create a budget

When starting out as an architect, it is important to have a general idea of how much money you want to make per year as well as what kind of lifestyle you desire.

Knowing these two things will determine your monthly budgets and yearly salary!

Budgeting can be done weekly or monthly depending on whether you are able to stay focused that way. Many people begin paying more consistently at the end of the month, so creating a schedule with spending allowed them to keep track of their money.

The easiest way to do this is through using online banking apps. Some even allow you to connect via mobile device!

Many people start off being expensively spenders, which isn’t bad if you’re willing to maintain that level of consumption. But eventually, they run into problems because they just don’t have enough money left over for other things like bills and future expenses.

So, in order to avoid this, try not to overspend unless you have the extra cash to back it up. Also, research ways to save money to pay down debt or invest in assets such as houses or cars.

How to Save Money

This doesn’t mean go shopping and buy nothing, but instead look into places to cut back on your daily costs. Find free resources and learn how to use them effectively. There are many websites and applications (called Apps) designed to help you do this.

Know your clients

As we discussed before, architects have different names depending on what field they are in. But no matter what you call yourself, one thing is universal: every business wants their services to be effective!

Business owners will often times feel overwhelmed by the number of firms in their area. Choosing who to hire can be tricky – but having strong contacts or at least meeting with potential customers is key.

Ask about their goals and if there’s anyone else they already use for similar services. Is it because they are looking for something specific? If so, ask how they wanted that service done and see whether you can help them achieve this.

Do not get too creative

As mentioned before, you can find many different architectures online and in books. Unfortunately, most of them are just variations of other people’s good ideas. Creating your own unique architecture is great if and only if you really know how to do it well.

Building off of what we discussed earlier, creating your own unique architectural style would be trying to put together pieces that don’t belong together yet. It will look more like a haphazard collection of materials than an organized structure.

This isn’t bad necessarily but it won’t help you achieve your goal of sharing your knowledge with others. If this article has shown anything, it’s that developing your drawing skills is important.
