How To Visualize Neural Network Architecture

A neural network is an ingenious way to apply machine learning to solve problems. Technically, it’s not even a class of algorithm per se because there are many different types of architectures for these networks. The most popular type is what’s been referred to as a deep neural net-work or DNN for short.

In this article, we will talk about one specific kind of architecture that has some very interesting properties when it comes to optimizing performance. This architecture was originally designed to be used in connection with image recognition tasks, but some clever people have adapted it for other applications like natural language processing (NLP) and speech recognition.

This new variant of the DNN architecture we’ll discuss here goes by the catchy name of residual networks or ResNets for short. These days they are almost universally considered to be among the best performing convolutional architectures out there.

Many researchers now use them as their go-to choice for state-of-the-art results in various NLP and computer vision tasks due to how well they generalize and improve accuracy as training sets get larger.

So why should you care? Because understanding how these networks work can help make your own AI systems more efficient! That may sound abstract at first, but really, all intelligent creatures rely heavily on neurons and how they connect to each other to function so anything related to that field is worth studying.

Look at examples of neural networks

how to visualize neural network architecture

There are many ways to visualize different architectures of neural networks. You can do it via software, printed diagrams or through intuitive pictures. Some methods require you to have some knowledge about neural networks while others are more beginner friendly.

The easiest way to understand how a neural network works is by looking at examples. By studying how other people designed their networks, you will be able to quickly apply what parts of the architecture they used and why!

There are several free online resources that allow you to design your own neural networks. You can then compare them with pre-designed networks to see how they work. This is an excellent way to learn how to use neural networks!

We will now look at two easy ways to visualize neural network architectures. These strategies can be applied to any kind of feedforward neural network.

Try to identify the layers

The first step towards understanding neural networks is figuring out how they work. One of the most important parts of this process is identifying the different layers in the network.

There are three main types of layer you will come across when learning about neural networks: input, hidden, and output. Input layers simply take some information as an input and produce nothing but raw data.

The next level is the hidden layer which processes the data more deeply before putting it through an output layer that does something with the info. A lot of the time these deeper functions are learned via training so that the computer can apply what should be done with the data for later use.

The final type of layer is the output layer which produces the results or outputs from the net. This is also where neurons are attached to do their thing!

You will typically start off learning one set of nets with only one output layer and learn why each neuron group is there, what activation function is used, and how to tweak those settings.

Connect the different layers with arrows

The next step in exploring neural networks is connecting all of your layer types together. Once you have done this, you can begin experimenting!

Neural network architectures are not limited to just having one linear or convolutional layer followed by another. There are many variety of configurations that people use to create their models.

One of the most popular alternative layering styles is what’s called a feedforward architecture. This term comes from how neurons work- they send information downstream via dendrites before it gets processed at the cell body.

Feedforward neural networks typically consist of an input layer, some sort of nonlinear processing unit (usually a fully connected layer), and then an output layer. More complex variants may also include a pooling layer in between the two.

The key part about these networks is the connection style of each layer type. For example, say you wanted to design a model to classify images as being either dog or cat. You would start with an image feature extraction layer, such as VGG16, and then a fully connect layer for classification.

Try to identify the nodes

how to visualize neural network architecture

The first step in designing your neural network is identifying what kind of node you want to add next. There are three main categories, or shapes, of nodes that most people use for classification problems.

These are typically referred to as fully connected, convolutional, or recurrent. You will need to choose which one works best for your dataset and problem set, but unfortunately, there is no hard and fast rule about it!

A little bit of research can save you a lot of time by picking the right shape for your architecture. Luckily, there are some free tools available online that have test sets so that you can compare different types of architectures and pick yours.

There are also several software packages that offer graphical interfaces to create neural networks such as Keras with TensorFlow backend and PyTorch. These usually have built-in defaults for layers like batch size and number of epochs, but you can always edit them if needed.

Connect the different nodes with lines or arrows

how to visualize neural network architecture

So now that we have our input, hidden, and output layers, it is time to connect them together. The way you do this is by adding lines or arrows.

You can start connecting all three of your layers together using straight lines. As you add more nodes in each layer, these lines will get longer and longer. Your network architecture will become thicker and thicker as you continue to add more features.

Once all three layers are connected, your model has full use of all of its neurons and potential functions. You can also rearrange the order in which the nodes connect themselves depending on how well your neural net learns.

There are some rules when designing your networks though. For example, very thin networks usually perform worse than thicker ones because they lack depth. A thick network may need too many iterations to converge.

Look at how neurons are connected

Neurons in the brain are organized into networks or structures. These connections, called synapses, play an important part in information processing.

Neural networks that learn tasks using artificial intelligence (AI) typically have very complex architectures. This makes it difficult for researchers to understand what parts of the network contribute most to the learning process.

In this article we will look more closely at one type of neural architecture, known as convolutional neural networks (ConvNets). ConvNets were popularized by Google’s AI research team in 2015, but they can be traced back much further than that.

By understanding how ConvNets work, you will get a better sense of not only why they perform well on certain computer vision problems, but also some general principles for designing your own neural networks.

We will also take a closer look at some of the components of a ConvNet, including its different layers and how they connect with each other.

Practice identifying different types of neurons

how to visualize neural network architecture

The next major component in neural network architectures is the neuron type or structure. Neurons can be feedforward, recurrent, convolutional, pooling, or state-based depending on what kind of information they process and how.

Feedforward layers are usually fully connected with no feedback loops like repeating connections between nodes. They play a large role in many NN classes such as CNNs and RNNs (discussed later).

Recurrent networks have self connecting edges similar to those of a looped conversation. These connect all nodes together in a cycle so that information flows back and forth across the whole architecture.

Convolutional layers work by applying an operation called filtering to node inputs. This filters out unimportant parts of the input while highlighting important features.

Pooling layers take away some of the inner details of each node to create a smoother output. Maximum pooling removes either the highest or lowest value, while average pools use the mean.

State-based neurons keep track of internal variables and apply mathematical functions to them to produce new outputs. For instance, memory cells do this when they store information for future reference.

Which types of neurons you include depends mostly on the problem domain and data sets.

Try to identify the output of each neuron

how to visualize neural network architecture

As mentioned before, neurons are some type of processing unit in neural networks. They go through several steps to achieve their goal of answering your question or doing something for the network.

The most important part of a neuron is its output. This is what it will do next, depending on how it is fed information from other neurons.

Neurons that learn complex tasks typically have multiple outputs. For example, a CNN (convolutional neural network) has many different filters that can be applied to an image to determine which parts recognize certain things in the picture.

A feedforward net also goes out-and-back as described above, so there’s not one direct path from input to output. A ReLU activation function is often used at the end of these paths, however!

By experimenting with different architectures you’ll figure out which ones work best under various conditions, but making sure you understand the individual components is key first.
