Is An Architecture Major Worth It?

As an architecture major, you will be taking some very expensive classes that can easily cost over $10,000 per year! This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it should definitely put into consideration how well your career as an architect is going to go or if this degree is truly worth it.

There are many ways to “prove” whether or not getting this degree was a good idea depending on what you want to do with your life. For example, does having this degree make you more likely to get hired? If so, then it was clearly worth it!

But before you decide if this is really for you, there are several things you need to think about. First, is this degree necessary to enter into the field of architecture? Probably not- most people who start out in architecture don’t have an advanced degree.

Second, how much money must you make as an architect before you invest in additional education? Most entry level positions don’t require a bachelor’s degree, so spending the extra money now could be wasted.

Third, how motivated are you to study outside of work? Many students drop out of school when they find something else they would rather be doing. You should be aware of this early on.

Fourth, how invested are you in the architectural community? Some people feel left out because they are not part of the inner circle, which makes it harder to gain new knowledge.

Why is architecture important?

As we know, architects play an integral part in shaping our cities and environments for the better. They design buildings of all shapes and sizes, from skyscrapers to homes!

But what many people don’t realize is that studying architectural art isn’t just about looking pretty. Architectural studies explore how spaces influence us physically and psychologically, as well as why certain designs are more appealing than others.

This insight can be applied to everything from designing hospitals to figuring out which colors promote wellness.

Furthermore, architects use principles of psychology when creating space and environmental layouts. For example, they consider things like how tall walls make you feel (and look) enclosed, or whether having lots of natural light makes you happier.

Majoring in architecture at college may seem like a waste of time if it doesn’t directly lead to a career in construction, but this degree definitely puts your student ID ahead of business cards!

Architects have a lot of practical skills that go beyond drawing pretty pictures, so making education in architecture a part-time study program is a great way to get professional benefits while still keeping your daily schedule flexible. - Natalis Kambourides, Student Life Editor

It provides structure to a project

A lot of people believe that studying architecture is totally pointless because you can learn just as much (if not more) by doing your own projects.

However, this isn’t always the case.

Architecture students learn how to organize space and apply basic concepts like proportion and balance to create spaces and environments. They also get exposure to different styles, which helps them identify defining characteristics of good architectural design.

These skills are important for anyone who wants to be creative in their work or even improve their artistic ability. If you're passionate about designing things — whether it's clothing, furniture or digital content — then why wouldn't you want to learn how to do it?

Furthermore, being an architect is a great way to make money. Most architects have graduate degrees so they must take at least one year off after graduation to find employment, but during this time they can still practice law, medicine or business while developing their career.

On top of all of these reasons, there are many free resources available to anyone looking to hone their drawing, creativity and organizational skills.

Your company will see an increase in your skill set

Even if you’re already very good at what you do, architecture is always changing and developing. New skills can be added to your repertoire, and even better ones can be incorporated into your work.

Architects have lots of opportunities to hone their craft and showcase their talent as designers. Many large companies look for architects with solid design chops so that they can integrate them into projects.

It also helps when looking for employment because most employers expect you to know some basic concepts of architectural theory.

Weed out poor quality designs by comparing them with great examples of architect's work. You should feel confident about how to evaluate an architect's style before giving him or her project consideration.

You will gain experience that can help you enter the job market

As an architecture major, your degree definitely prepares you for the workplace. Companies look at education as proof of your skills in design. Having an architect license allows you to put this knowledge into practice.

Architects have extensive licenses which include things like drafting, business management, engineering, and construction. All of these areas are related to designing buildings!

A career in architecture is also very diverse. Even if you don’t want to work in a big company, you can still be well paid. Many small businesses need architects to create architectural plans and designs for expansions or new facilities.

There are many ways to remain active in the field even after graduating. By practicing what we call “soft” architecture, such as being an interior designer, we stay relevant and learn more about building layouts.

Not only that, but experienced architects make good money. The average income for an entry level architect is around $50,000 per year. This amount goes up slightly depending on where they live and position within the organization.

It can be very lucrative

A career in architecture is quite competitive, even more so now with the competition online. Having a degree or certification in architectural drawing can really help you get noticed as an architect.

Architects must have at least one year of professional experience under their belt, which means being hired as an assistant designer. Many people start working as an apprentice architect, spending several years learning the basics of design before getting licensed.

The most popular way to gain that experience is by becoming an intern, where you work for pay while studying part time. Both are great ways to learn more about designing!

The average income per hour for an Architect is around $30,000 according to PayScale.com, making it the third highest paying major job field after physician and engineer. The lowest paid position is project manager, who makes the most out of managerial skills.

Overall, architects earn well above the national average salary of $50,700 per year, which is another reason why this career path is worth considering.

You get to plan everything

As an architecture major, you get to be in control of every aspect of your career- including what field you want to pursue it in. If you wanted to be, say, a landscape architect, you can do that too!

Landscape architects design outdoor spaces such as parks, buildings, or even just individual pieces like gardens or water features.

Architects also study how space is organized and designed within a building so that they can apply those concepts to other areas. For example, using proportions and shapes, an architect may organize and design a room or area of a house or office.

There are many ways to become an architect after college, but most require several years of studies and/or experience in the field.

You get to choose the location

As we mentioned earlier, architecture is more than just designing buildings. There are many ways to be an architect, and not every career path in design requires you to have a degree or certification as an architect.

Some of the most important jobs that architects do aren’t actually considered architectural. For example, urban planners help cities grow by choosing where new housing developments should go.

Landscape designers create beautiful outdoor spaces that promote wellness and nature immersion. They typically work within budget constraints, so their designs can seem very minimalist.

Architects also work with engineers to envision how things could possibly function. This includes creating concepts for both indoor and outdoor environments.

Interior decorators make sure your home looks nice! By limiting themselves to using natural materials and colors, they keep balance between being artistic and staying practical.

All of these professionals are called upon when it comes time to renovate an existing building or construct something from scratch.

This isn’t too surprising because all of them share some common skills like drawing, proportion, color theory, etc. But beyond that, people who work in other fields often learn about structures and how they work.

For instance, engineers study physics and math to understand why certain shapes and configurations are better than others at protecting individuals inside or outside the built environment.

Urban planners use mathematics to determine the best placement strategies for residential and business development.

It can be very dangerous

As we discussed, going into architecture with little to no experience is risky. If you are planning to major in design or architectural courses, you should know what kind of education your future self will need.

You don’t want to start studying hard courses like human anatomy or interior design if you have never touched a pencil before. The same goes for engineering or physics courses – they are both much more complicated than something like algebra, which anyone can take.

By starting early, you can save yourself a lot of money by not having to spend additional tuition fees as well as expenses related to learning these fields (books, laptops, software, etc.).

Furthermore, most architects must pass exams that focus on fundamentals of their field, so knowing some basic things about drawing, proportion, color theory, and composition would help you get started.
