Is Architecture Major Worth It

As an architecture major, you will be taking some very expensive courses that require lots of time investment. If this is not done properly, then your chance at getting a well paying job may be limited to only those positions that are un-designable or have no relation to building aesthetically pleasing spaces.

Architecture is more than just designing buildings, it is about studying how design applies to different disciplines and understanding the basics in both creative and analytical thinking. This includes mathematics, psychology, philosophy, and other related areas.

If you are already working as an architect, you should consider adding additional architectural studies to increase your career opportunities. Or perhaps you are currently unemployed and need to find ways to gain employment quickly. Either way, these lessons can be learned anywhere and through any means.

There are many free resources online and offline for anyone looking to learn more about the field of architecture. Not only can you learn general concepts, but you can also hone your skills by practicing them.

It depends

is architecture major worth it

As we have seen, being an architect is not like getting a bachelor’s degree in architecture and then working as one for the rest of your life. There are very few positions that require a professional degree in architecture, so most architects don’t earn enough money to justify the cost.

Furthermore, many people think that since you need a college education to be an architect, all those who can’t afford school loans will never become professionals. This assumption makes sense when you consider how many students drop out of architectural schools every year!

The number of people who drop out before they graduate is quite high because it takes lots of resources to go through school-housing, food, transportation, etc. Most students cannot pay for these things on their own, making it difficult to stay enrolled.

If you are thinking about going to architecture school, do some research first to see if this is really worth it. Check out our article about reasons why attending art or design school isn’t the best idea to make sure this information applies to you!

Hopefully you will find more reason why majoring in architecture is not the best choice unless you know what career path you want to take.

Too much emphasis is put on gaining an architecture degree

is architecture major worth it

As more and more students choose to major in design, or even drop out of school altogether, there are now many people with art degrees that do not enjoy their jobs very much. Artists have become professional freeloaders, depending on others for their livelihood.

Mostly working part-time at least during the off season, they make good money doing something they love, but it seems like they are never given enough recognition for their work.

As architects, we need to promote our profession and ourselves more often than not. We must be aware that most of us will only get paid once per job!

We depend heavily upon business owners who invest in advertising to spread the word about their companies, so why don’t we help them along by promoting ourselves and what we know?

Architects should consider themselves market professionals and run marketing campaigns for their own businesses.

Too many architects are not skilled

As an architect, you will have to show your skills at least once per year. This is very difficult for some because they do not learn their field of expertise anywhere else but through education.

If an employer does not see that you know how to use proportions correctly or understand basic concepts like space planning, then you will be out of a job.

Architects are paid heavily depending on what kind of designs they make so it is important to hone their craft before rushing into employment.

Most people start working in architecture as interns where they get trained by more experienced staff. The only way to truly learn how to become a professional architect is via educational institutions.

Education is one of the most expensive things for someone who is already spending money on groceries and rent every month.

There are many different job opportunities in architecture

As an architect, you will be designing buildings and landscapes. You can work for large corporations or small companies, depending on your budget. Some of the most well-known architects’ offices have very expensive dues, so not every profession member is paid the same amount.

Architects design everything from skyscrapers to single family homes. They usually start with a general area such as “landscape concept” or “office interior layout,” then choose which styles they want to include in their project and what colors they would like to use.

Many people associate architects only with building designs, but that is just one part of their jobs. They also have to oversee all stages of construction, make sure everyone is doing there job correctly, and keep up with the ever changing field of architectural technology.

With the rising cost of tuition and professional fees, it has become increasingly difficult to pay for school without loans. Because funding is limited due to economic conditions, some students may feel pressured into choosing an undergraduate degree in business or engineering instead of art.

It is difficult to get a job in architecture

is architecture major worth it

Even if you are passionate about designing buildings, it can be tricky to find work as an architect. Most people who start studying architectural design choose either bachelor’s or master’s degrees in this field. Both of these programs typically require at least four years to complete so most students don’t actually begin working until they are well into their careers.

Architecture has a very low unemployment rate but there were only around 200,000 architects employed nationwide in 2014![1] That means that even though more and more schools are offering advanced degree programs in architecture, many positions remain empty.

In fact, one study found that almost half of all graduating seniors with an undergraduate degree in architecture will never find employment in the field.[2] This isn’t due to them not being able to do the job, it’s because they don’t want to do it!

Many young professionals think that becoming an architect is a way to make lots of money quickly, which is why so few go ahead with studying the profession. In fact, some experts say that most future architects won’t get paid much of anything beyond a decent salary![/p][/quote]

The reason that so few people become architects is not because there aren’t enough jobs for them, it is because most employers look at education heavily when deciding whether to hire someone.

It is difficult to start a business in architecture

Even if you are passionate about designing buildings, it can be tricky to find work as an architect. Architects design real estate, skyscrapers, hospitals, and more!

Most people who become architects have a desire to use their creativity in creating things. But being an architect requires working under very strict rules that vary from industry to industry.

Architects must study mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, and other disciplines related to construction. They must take courses such as interior decorating, furniture making, engineering, or marketing.

This means most architects cannot just go into fashion school after college either. Many have to get additional training later in life. This could include teaching themselves new skills or taking advanced classes.

Most architecture companies are not great for pay

is architecture major worth it

A lot of people think that going to an architectural school is the key to being paid well as an architect, but this isn’t always the case.

Architectural schools typically give you three degrees: Bachelor's in Art or Landscape Architecture, Masters in Design, or Professional Architect.

A bachelor's degree doesn't really set you apart from other architects unless you happen to have special skills such as drawing, designing furniture, or knowing some type of construction.

But beyond those, there aren’t too many perks. Depending on where you go, it can be very expensive!

And while having your own logo and letterhead may help project yourself as more professional, most people don’t take much time to create them anyway.

Furthermore, most employers look at diplomas more like job applications than proof of talent. They want to see if you're likely to work hard and show up early, among other things.

If you're looking to make money as an architect, your best bet is probably self-teaching with YouTube and developing relationships with professionals.

Most architecture jobs are not creative

is architecture major worth it

As an architect, your creativity is limited by how much of the field you learn. Technically speaking, there are three major areas in design that make up what we call the “architectural style” or “school” of designing buildings.

These styles are Neoclassical, Modernist, and Postmodernism.

Neo-classicism focuses on classic shapes and proportioning to create aesthetically pleasing designs. This includes things like Greek columns and balanced proportions.

Modernists focused on clean lines and asymmetrical styling to give off a futuristic feeling.

And then there’s Postmodernism, which uses references from various art forms to achieve its effects. Things like graffiti, comic books, and photography can all play important roles in shaping the look of a building.

All these concepts apply to the school of design that most people associate with architects — Neo-Classicism. So why would anyone ever consider going into this career if it doesn’t even allow for enough originality?

Architecture isn’t about being artistic, it’s about using well-established formulas to produce familiar looking spaces. That’s why so many buildings look similar – they’re designed within the parameters of the Neo-classic style.

Creativity is overrated

If you really want to be considered an artist then go ahead and drop out of college and start painting.
