As architects, we get a lot of flack for our field. People seem to feel that it is no longer needed or valuable in this day and age. Some even go as far as saying it should be done away with altogether!
While it is true that technology has made us less dependent on having an architect place his or her signature next to every project, it also means that people don’t necessarily need one anymore either.
There are many reasons why architecture is still very much alive and well today. This article will talk about some of these reasons and how you can use your skills as an architectural designer to contribute more than just beautiful shapes to projects.
It is important to note though that being an architect isn’t all about designing buildings – it is a much larger job title than that. Only around 10% of architects actually spend their time solely focusing on design, the rest working in other areas of the industry such as business, engineering, interior decoration, etc.
This doesn’t make them any less worthy of respect though, especially since they have studied something that most consider to be pretty fundamental to our society. So let’s take a look at seven ways that architects still make a difference beyond purely shaping spaces.

A lot of people consider architects to be very pretentious, standing around with their noses in the air while everyone else does the work.
They imagine that an architect goes out at night and studies buildings physically, then returns home and draws all sorts of crazy designs before presenting them to clients.
This isn’t entirely false, but only half-truths.
Architects do spend time studying buildings – they are often students themselves, for example – but this doesn’t mean that what they produce afterwards is necessarily well designed.
It can sometimes even be quite ugly!
Take a look at some of our favorite hated architectural styles below and see if you agree.
As we have seen, however, not every architect is designed to make a lot of money which can sometimes lead to them creating designs that feel over-engineered and overly complex.
Some people love this style of architecture because it elicits comments about how beautiful it is or how clever the design is.
But for most other people, these types of buildings become very complicated to understand and use. This is bad if you like simplicity and efficiency.
Architects who create elaborate styles lose sight of what makes their building truly special in the first place – the space they were given to work with! They go too far up in the process by designing the interior decoration or floor plans before figuring out how to position their structure and what kind of atmosphere they wanted to create.
This article will talk more about why some architectural styles may seem overwhelming and difficult to comprehend and use. But first, let’s take a look at some famous examples of this.

As we know, good architectural design is not easy to achieve. It takes time, effort, and most importantly, skill. Architects must be trained in their field, which makes it more expensive for employers to hire them.
There are many ways to become an architect, but none of them guarantee you will be able to call yourself one. Some schools offer only two or three years of coursework before graduates are considered professionals, so there is no formal education about what makes up that job description.
Architects’ jobs change constantly as new technologies make designing newer buildings easier than ever. Because architects have such a limited educational background, they may find themselves unprepared when those changes occur.
Overall, being an architect is very difficult to pursue without having at least some training in the area. This is why most people who want to be professional architects must first work as engineers or designers with related fields.

As we have seen, there is no universal definition of what makes up an “architecture” style.
Furthermore, most people who criticize architectural styles seem to use their definitions very selectively.
They will say that one style looks like it was designed by someone with no sense of proportion or that another looks too simple or pure. But they typically ignore the fact that these same proportions, textures, and features exist in other styles that they love!
Architectural critics usually focus only on the shapes themselves without taking into account how well the architect organized the space and how beautiful the space as a whole is. These qualities make up what we call good design.
Another way some architects are criticized is for using too much decoration or unnecessary materials. Some even get attacked for putting too much emphasis on material richness instead of defining strong lines and spaces.
However, none of these things can be called bad unless you believe in minimalism and less is always more. If you don't, then the designers in question must be accused of wasting money and making poor decisions.

Being an architect is more than just designing buildings – it’s being creative, entrepreneurial, and practical in every aspect of your life.
Architecture can be considered a form of art that uses math, science, and psychology to create spaces, environments, and objects where people live, work, and play.
Spaces with great natural light make us happier and increase productivity. Well-designed homes help people feel happy when they look at them and want to move into one themselves or spend time in their own home.
And making smart choices for the environment has tangible benefits – reducing air and water pollution, saving energy, and creating healthier communities.
It’s also interesting to note that even though architects don’t have a degree focused exclusively on design, most hold either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration, marketing, or interior or landscape arts.
That means they’re trained in how to use aesthetics effectively as a tool to promote products and services.

As mentioned earlier, not every architect is paid the same amount. Some may earn more than others depending on what kind of projects they take on and how well they market themselves.
But with that said, there are ways to get great quality architectural services for less money! You just have to know where to look.
Generalist architects will usually offer their service at lower prices due to them offering several services such as interior design or furnishing suggestions.
These types of architects might also outsource some parts of the project if you don’t want them to do anything beyond designing the space. For example, they could draw up a plan for your house but you would need to find someone to help you style it and/or furnish it.
Architects who specialize in sustainability or green architecture may go cheaper because they are limited to environmentally friendly materials and designs.

A lot of people think that architecture is too expensive to learn, which is why they never pursue it as a career. But what most people don’t realize is that architectural design actually takes a lot longer than people imagine!
Architects spend a very large amount of their time doing things like designing buildings, gathering materials for projects, traveling to meet with vendors or clients, and keeping up with all the developments in their field.
They also have to take frequent breaks because working long hours is common in this job. All of these things take away from other areas of your life, which may not go over well if you are a hard worker who enjoys being busy.
If you want to become an architect, try to focus on one area of the profession first, such as business administration or marketing. These types of jobs aren’t as physically demanding, so you will probably keep more energy left over for studying architecture.
Business students already know how to organize and manage time, so this would be a good start.

While some may consider it to be a “soft” career path, that isn't true at all! In fact, architecture is one of the top ten professional degree fields you can get with most universities offering either Bachelor's or Master's degrees in this field.
Architects need to have a solid understanding of both creative and practical skills — something that many people are not always aware of.
This can make it hard for people to approach architects with questions about their job, as they might not understand what types of things an architect does on a daily basis. It also means there is a lot of competition since not everyone understands how important architects are to our everyday lives.
