The architecture school at Kansas State University is one of the largest in the country, with over 1,000 students enrolled every year. It has also become very well known for its beautiful buildings that it designs and constructs.
Many people are familiar with some of their projects, including the Kirkland Student Services Center, which was built back in 2003-2004 and now houses several departments such as Financial Aid, Academic Success, Career Development, etc.
But there are many other impressive structures across campus that have received significant media coverage or praise from various architectural groups and publications. When most people think about college campuses, they picture the classic brick squares and buildings with large roofs, but not too much else. However, many universities offer more than just those types of shapes when designing their campuses!
Here we will take a look at five different buildings at K State that use strong geometric forms to create unique spaces. These interesting shapes paired together form a vibrant environment that encourages interaction and exploration.

While some might consider architecture to be just pretty pictures, it is much more than that. Architectural styles are actually built off of three main components – shapes, colors, and materials. Shapes can be simple or very complex, colors tend to repeat themselves throughout history, and material types remain constant as well.
Architecture is also influenced by people and cultures surrounding it. For instance, during the Roman Empire era, there was an emphasis on large buildings with lots of space. This influence can be seen in structures such as the Coliseum and the Pantheon.
After the fall of Rome, many different architectural styles emerged. These include Gothic, Renaissance, Neoclassical, and so on. Different cultures had unique ways of building structure and style- which helped shape modern day design!
K State has been hosting students since its opening in 1961 and boasts one of the highest student attendance rates in the country. Many famous architects got their start at K State including William Merriam (the creator of Anheuser-Busch) and Richard Meier who designed both the library and cafeteria here.
If you’re interested in becoming an architect, studying art and psychology help to hone your skills too! Both fields study form, how things look and what they convey to others.
An architectural style is just what it sounds like — it’s a way to organize, understand, and create buildings. While not every building uses an individual example of an architecture style, most use one or more heavily to develop their concept. For instance, using heavy influence from Gothic Revival style, many buildings have rounded arches and steep roofs.
There are several major historical architectural styles that we still recognize today. These include Neoclassical, Renaissance, Art Deco, Modernist, and Folk Victorian. All these styles were influential enough to remain in popular use until the present day.
Neoclassicism was very formal and elegant, emphasizing clean lines and proportion. It originated in ancient Greece and Rome, then spread across Europe. Architectural forms adapted to this style included regular rectangles with smooth flowing edges, vertical stripes, and strong lines. The word “neoclassic” comes from the words new class (the people who lived during this time period) and classicism (the style itself).
Renaissance art focused on humanistic themes such as figures painted with great detail and expression. Artists incorporated natural light into their work by creating windows and doors, for example. Materials used reflected the glory of the Italian culture at the time, which consisted mostly of hard stone and marble.
Art deco made use of geometric shapes and patterns along with bright colors. This influenced later design trends, such as modern and futurism.

The concept of recognizable shapes is one that most people are familiar with when it comes to buildings. These shapes include squares, rectangles, ovals, triangles, and spheres.
Many famous landmarks around the world use this basic structure for inspiration. For example, the Chrysler Headquarters in New York City is framed by two large square roofs, making it look like an upside down U.
The AT&T Center in San Antonio uses three parallel lines creating what looks like an H shape. This gives it its name – HAT! (Horn-shaped auditorium tower).
Interactive art installations such as those found at Burning Man feature tall spires surrounded by smaller structures which create the illusion of size.
These are just a few examples of how architects utilize simple geometries to make designs seem more dramatic or important. More often than not, it is because they want to convey a message, emphasize something, or generate interest.

In May of 2016, King Soopers Wealth Management opened its doors to the public with an event it titled ‘The Art of Savings’. Since then, this location has become known as the K state building due to its resemblance in shape and style with the Wyoming state capital.
The interior design features bright colors, geometric shapes, and lots of natural light. The space is also designed to be spacious so that you feel comfortable when coming here for business or personal reasons.
Staff members at the firm describe the environment they work in as one where people are willing to put in effort to keep up-to-date on current events and things going on in the world. They say that this openness encourages collaboration and conversation, which are both important components in achieving success at King Soopers!
These qualities are what made their workplace unique and why it has been such a succesful setting.

A skyscraper is any building with at least five floors and a roof that extends up to three times its height. The roofs are typically made out of metal or glass, but some have tile or wooden roofs.
The number of stories in a skyscraper matter more than their overall size. It takes longer for air to run out as you climb higher so there’s less incentive to save money by going shorter.
Skyscrapers are usually built close together, which means lots of people can look outside and see the same view. This helps promote unity within an area.
There are many types of skyscrapers we could talk about but one of the most famous is the Chrysler Center in Chicago.

Skyscraper design has changed many times throughout history. Some say that early skyscrapers look similar to what we have today, but this is not true. The earliest tall buildings were mostly wooden or brick structures with roofs made of terracotta tiles or leaded glass.
The next phase was steel frame construction. This allowed for taller, thinner buildings due to less weight being supported by gravity. The Empire State Building in New York is one example of this.
Modern day skyscraper designs came into their own during the Art Deco era (1903-1945). These so called “modern” style buildings used large vertical lines and curves as decoration. Many famous examples include the Chrysler Center in Detroit and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
After World War II, modernism became very popular. Simplicity and clean lines are typical features. Examples of this include the AT&T Towers in Chicago and One Wall Street in New York City.

Construction costs are influenced by many different factors. The type of building, area covered, material used, number of stories, square footage, climate, season, how much natural light you want in the space, etc.
Overall quality of work is another key factor in determining final costs. Things like consistency in painting and wall coverings, use of well-fitted materials, and efficient production can reduce the overall price.
General contractors’ fees are also a significant part of construction project costs. These include their overhead expenses for phones, supplies, office rentals, etc. and their profit margin or “net income” they hope to make on the job.
Lastly, the timing of important events during construction can influence how much money projects spend. For example, when utilities need to be turned on or off, or when tenants move out, more permits have to be obtained and paperwork completed.

The architecture of most major universities has some common themes. Buildings that are organized around strong vertical axes are usually preferred over horizontal ones.
Vertical organization is very efficient in terms of how much space you have to use, it’s also more elegant looking as there’s not much room for things to get out of hand visually.
Tightly packed buildings with little outdoor space are particularly egregious examples of this. Many college campuses suffer from this due to their close proximity to other schools or residential areas.
Another reason why vertical layouts are better is because they promote community feeling. All departments within an academic setting are oriented towards teaching students so having similar building types and styles promotes teamwork and collaboration.
There are many beautiful examples of this at prestigious university across the world. A classic example would be Harvard University where all but one of their colleges fit into a relatively small area.
Colleges such as MIT however prefer sprawling open spaces which makes them feel separate. This could be due to the size of the school or the desire for individual departmental identity. It depends on what the campus wants to emphasize.
