This week, we will be discussing the important role that architecture plays in shaping how well an organization functions. More broadly, good architectural design can have a significant positive impact on morale, productivity, and effectiveness of employees.

Badly designed buildings or neighborhoods can hurt community spirit or lead to unsafe conditions for people who live or work nearby. Poorly conceived facilities often waste money due to excess costs in production or operational difficulties.

Subpar architecture also puts additional pressure on those responsible for ensuring compliance with zoning regulations and environmental laws. These individuals must devote time and resources to educating others about what is allowed and what is not.

When architects put effort into creating exemplary designs, these opportunities are minimized to a minimum.

Good architecture improves overall quality of life by setting high standards for efficiency, utility, and beauty. It creates comfortable spaces where people want to spend time and learn from examples.

It cultivates feelings of confidence, ownership, and even inspiration, making us feel better about our own abilities. All of this contributes to a healthier mental state.

Bridging the Gap

Architects may not receive as much respect as doctors, lawyers, or engineers, but they deserve more than a passing mention here. They wield powerful tools that have profound effects on society, and most people could benefit greatly from improving their skills.

Many professionals lack basic knowledge of building codes, sustainability strategies, and/or effective interior layout concepts.

In our modern world, technology has become an integral part of almost every aspect of life. Technology is incorporated into everything from home appliances to smart phones!

Technology comes with some very expensive costs, however. One of these costs is how much energy it takes to power all of those devices. Power hungry gadgets have become commonplace due to technological advances that allow for more powerful designs. All too often though, these advanced technologies are not properly insulated or cooled down so they consume more electricity than needed.

Powerful computers use excess cooling to help regulate their temperature and prevent overheating. Similarly, graphics cards and other components need adequate airflow to function correctly. A poorly designed computer system will suffer in performance due to poor heat dissipation.

Fortunately, there are several ways to ensure your device’s efficient operation while still keeping the cost low. By understanding the different types of ventilation you can add to your laptop, phone, or tablet, you will know what to look for when buying new cases, covers, or coolers. This article will go over three basic styles of air flow and two types of case materials and how each one impacts thermal regulation.

Open space

A significant part of campus is made up of open spaces. These include parks, courtyards, green roofs, and more. Many students live close to their school so they do not need additional outdoor areas for use.

There are many ways to contribute to this environment through sustainable practices. By donating food or money to a vegetarian organization, you can help reduce pollution by educating people about plant-based diets.

By purchasing products that have less packaging, you can help preserve our natural resources and promote sustainability.

Architects should consider how much land an office has when choosing where to reside. If possible, it is better to find an area with lots of open space than to commute back and forth every day.

Sustainability in college includes reducing your waste production and energy usage. Some tips include using reusable materials instead of plastic ones, recycling what you can, and turning off unused devices at night.

Vaulted ceilings

Another feature that many buildings with vaulted or peaked roofs include are windows that run along the length of the roof. These are often referred to as skylights because they let light in from the sky, but they also help reduce energy loss by letting some natural sunlight enter your house.

In houses with vaulted or peaked roofs, these skylight windows are very common since it is hard to fit lots of window space while keeping the ceiling level. In fact, most homes have at least one!

These windows work well in winter time when there is no sun exposure, so many builders include several to maximize use of the space. People usually pay special attention to making sure the glass is soundproof and sturdy, but you may want to consider how easy it would be to close them if needed for safety or privacy.

Many owners find using multiple shades or curtains to block out the light helpful in lowering electricity usage during night hours when the lights are not being used.

Buildings at Kansas State University are categorized into three different types according to their function and use. These include academic, administrative or student services, and research facilities.

Academic buildings typically have limited outside exposure so they can be designed to focus in for internal uses only. They may also require larger amounts of natural light, which can be supplemented by using solar panels or other design features.

Administrative buildings usually cater to large groups such as departments that do not necessarily relate to each other. For example, there is an accounting department, but no finance building. There is a human resources (HR) department, but no general administration office like what we refer to as an administrator.

Research facilities are mostly focused on educating students through teaching and learning experiences. These buildings should emphasize gathering and sharing knowledge and information.

KSU has many beautiful examples of all three types of buildings along with some mix between the two others.

Art Gallery

The art gallery is an integral part of any academic department or organization that has artwork as a major component of what it offers students and members. Having a strong art gallery allows your institution to showcase its artistic talent, promote student creativity, and establish relationships with local artists.

Art galleries are usually a place where people can visit and spend time looking at paintings, sculptures, and other creative projects. They may even get inspired by one piece they see there!

Many colleges have an open studio policy in their art galleries, which means anyone can create work for exhibition without having to be formally trained as an artist. This is very popular because many individuals feel limited in opportunities to show their talents due to cost or lack of resources available to them. An open studio policy is a way to fix this problem.

Some institutions hold themed shows every few months to attract more visitors to their gallery. These themes could include landscapes, still life studies, portraits, and so on. By choosing a theme, you will make sure the community comes together to enjoy the displayed material.

At Kansas State University, our architecture gallery does not currently have a specific theme. That is about to change, though!

Beginning next semester, we will host a spring exhibition titled “Kansas City Landmarks”. The exhibition will feature eight sites around the city that were built during different periods within the last century.

Pool Hall

The next project we will look at is something that may not seem like an architecture project, but really is. It’s the pool hall! Many college campuses have a student organization or community group that holds swimming lessons for kids of all ages. Some even organize diving competitions and other water sports.

All this talk about water makes us wonder what kind of requirements there are to have a proper pool area. Obviously you don’t want someone falling in because of poor drainage, so what kinds of things should be considered?

I’m going to assume here that students already have an outdoor pool they can use, so I won’t go into too much detail about that. What I will discuss, however, are some possible additions to your current pool space. These could include different types of fencing, changing rooms, and maybe even a little cabana type area if needed.

If you’re ever looking to expand your pool space, consider doing it with a goal of creating separate areas within the space. For example, instead of just having a large open lane, add some fences and changerooms off of it. Or, if you wanted to add more aquatic activities, then start building additional swim teams or classes.

Students often times grow up spending time in pools, so adding new ways to enjoy the water is important. A lot of people find benefits in swimming, including weight loss, improved overall health, and learning how to survive in emergencies.

Shopping Mall

The shopping mall is one of the most basic urban forms, going back to ancient Greece. It is also one of the most common types of buildings we find in our cities today! A shopping mall typically contains several stores with an open area in between or connected via walkways.

The open areas are sometimes called plazas or courtyards because they create a space for people to gather and spend time outside of their respective store sites. This way, people do not have to go into another location to visit other stores, they can stay within their own budget, and there is still plenty to explore.

Shopping malls show how architecture has evolved. Ancient Greek structures were mostly made out of stone or marble which require significant maintenance and cost money to heat and cool. Metal roofs will melt in hot weather so it must be used with caution.

Modern day shopping malls use glass as their main material due to its ease of cleaning and low maintenance costs. However, just like any other form of roofing, metal roofs need to be cared for properly.

Overall, shopping malls are very efficient at gathering people and encouraging spending. They appeal to everyone, no matter what income level you have.

Parking Lot

The most basic requirement for any building is to have an adequate amount of space to store and contain cars. This is called parking or car storage.

Most buildings require at least one level of parking, with some even having separate levels for different make and model cars!

Concrete and asphalt are the two common materials used to create these car parkings. While not very aesthetically pleasing, they do the job well and are extremely durable.

These types of car parks can get expensive to build however, as you need to pay for all the space, the ramps, the entrances and exits, and safety features like turn lanes and guardrails.

Costs also include paying someone to help you maintain the lot (lawn care, snow removal, etc.) and financing your car purchase. Because owning a new vehicle is very cost effective, many people start off buying cheap vehicles that will depreciate quickly.
