Learning about Architecture

As we already discussed, creating space is an integral part of any successful interior design project. It makes your house or apartment feel good to look into it, and also gives you more room for furniture and objects.

This article will talk about how to spell the word architecture, however. 😉 I’ll go over some examples of different types of spaces that are important in every home.

I’ll also include some tips and tricks for designing your own rooms, as well as some easy ways to add shape and depth to a space.

History of architecture

Like most fields, architects’ beginnings were not as flashy or high-profile as they are today. Architects back in ancient times did not have their own special name or title. They worked under various masters who hired them to design buildings for you to use!

Architecture has been around since prehistoric times. Buildings that stand the test of time and prove popular remain in use is proof of this. Ancient Rome was known to hire many different architects to create structures such as temples, theaters, and arenas.

It wasn’t until the Renaissance though when people began to appreciate what an architect really was. A renaissance person was someone with a passion for learning and exploring new things — a trait still seen in our field today.

During this period, artists and architects started having conversations about concepts like proportion, harmony, and unity. All beautiful ideas which we still talk about today. Some say these ideals came directly from God but no one knows for sure!

Since then, architects have made famous structures all over the world. The Taj Mahal, the Sydney Opera House, and the Louvre are just a few examples of beautifully designed spaces.

These days, technology makes it possible to train as an architect too. You can learn how to put together a house or plan out a skyscraper using computer programs and free templates.

How do architects earn a living?

There are several ways that architects make money.

Different types of architecture

There are several different types of architectural styles that people use to build structures or redesign existing buildings. These include Neoclassical, Art Deco, Mission Style, Modern, Post-Modern, Brutalism, Minimalist, and more.

All of these styles have some common features. They are all characterized by their use of proportion, shape, and decoration. Proportion refers not only to how tall an object is, but also what size it is in relation to its surroundings. For example, a house with very little space next to it would be considered too close for safety.

Shape refers to the curving or linear nature of an object. A house with rounded corners is shaped like a sphere.

Decoration includes things such as windows, doors, roofs, and other shapes. It can be elaborate or simple depending on the style.

Neoclassicism was inspired by Ancient Greece and Rome, so most notably they feature lots of white columns and decorations. The classic movie theater designs are mostly Neoclassic.

Art deco influenced many modern architectural styles, especially those looking sleek and elegant. Buildings designed during this time period used bright colors, geometric patterns, and were sometimes expressionistic (like art). Some famous examples of this style include the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and the Louvre.

Mission style churches emphasize large windows and light flowing into the building. This creates a feeling of openness and spirituality.

Organization of an architecture team

As with any large group, there will be times when it feels like you’re doing everything yourself. Or that no one is helping you complete your project. This can feel very frustrating at times!

It may help to remember that you don’t have to do this alone. In fact, having more people involved in shaping and supporting your vision can only improve the finished product.

Project teams contain both internal and external members. These members typically include architects, engineers, interior designers, planners, turf field specialists, stakeholders, and general contractors.

Internal members work for the same organization as you, while external members are hired professionals who contribute their talents to make sure your project moves forward efficiently.

Stakeholders are key players in the process. They include clients, family, friends, and colleagues who play different roles depending on what stage of the design process they reach.

Architects and other members of the architectural team develop concepts or ideas for the space and talk about how those ideas could be implemented into the building or remodel.

Interior designer and decorators create designs for the room or spaces in the house or office. They also choose colors and materials to use for decorations and layouts.

Engineers determine whether current technology can be adapted to meet the needs of the project or if new equipment must be used.

General contractors oversee all stages of construction, from finding and hiring subcontractors to managing site logistics and supplies.

Design principles of architecture

The term “architecture” has gotten pretty loose these days. Most people associate it with designing skyscrapers or buildings, but that is only one part of what architects do. What most people don't know is that there are some fundamental design concepts that all well-designed architectures share.

These basic architectural concepts go far beyond things like using horizontal and vertical lines to organize space and creating roofs or walls for cover. They include qualities such as proportion, unity, simplicity, and clarity.

Proportion refers not just to how tall something is, but also how wide it is compared to its surroundings. Unity means having features that work together instead of being separate pieces. Simplicity looks very straightforward and easy to understand. And clarity focuses on making sure your audience can easily see and recognize an object or thing.

There are several schools of thought about which design principles are important, and which are less significant. Some say proportion is more crucial than others, while others believe unity takes precedence over both proportion and emphasis on detail. Many think that simplicity comes last since everything else already seems simple!

Whatever school of thinking you belong to, make sure you are aware of them so you can apply them properly when designing anything — from a room to a boat to a cityscape.

What is an architect's job?

An architect’s main goal is to design buildings and landscapes that people enjoy looking at and live in, for a long time.

He or she designs spaces and environments that are functionally efficient and aesthetically pleasing. To achieve this, the architect looks not only at how much space there is, but also what use of space is, and how people interact with it.

The function of a room is determined by the things people do in it – whether they work, relax, eat, sleep or just because it’s a part of their daily life cycle. A well-designed space will be appropriate for these activities.

Architecture has many other functions than serving people as home bases, suchas illustrating a theme, showing off a product feature or creating inspiring awe. All of these apply particularly to large structures like skyscrapersand bridges.

By having an understanding of basic architecture, you will know which styles and concepts are worth exploring and studying, and why.

What is an engineer's job?

As engineers, our mission is to solve complex engineering problems through creative application of science and technology. Technology has made it easy for anyone with a degree to design anything from a house to a space station, so individuals with no formal training can create their own spaces or develop new ideas.

That’s great if you want to be the next Steve Jobs, but most people don’t. Most people simply want to enjoy what they do not have to spend too much time doing it. They want to wake up in a comfortable bed and go back to sleep after working hard every day.

They want their home to make them feel relaxed and safe, and they do not care about racing cars or flying planes. For these people, professional grade service providers are available in the market.

These professionals specialize in creating spaces that meet certain criteria and standards. Engineers contribute by designing beautiful buildings and homes that other experts put into use.

Who is Benjamin Franklin?

While most people know who Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, or Thomas Edison are, less well-known is the person who had the biggest influence on the way we build houses today. His name is Benjamin Henry Heaviside!

He was an English mathematician, physicist, radio engineer, and electrical engineer who made major contributions to our understanding of electromagnetism. In fact, his work led directly to the invention of the telephone!

He also played a significant role in developing the field that we now call electronics by creating the first practical electric motor. You probably have one right now!

And while he never designed any buildings himself, what you may not know about him is that he invented something called “the differential amplifier” — which is a very important building block for electronic engineers.

The differential amplifier allows us to make more powerful computers than would otherwise be possible, and it has applications beyond just computer technology. For example, sound sensors use differential amplifiers to detect changes in pressure (like when someone speaks into a device) over time.

What is the significance of the Golden Ratio in art and architecture?

The golden ratio was first identified by Greek mathematician Euclid more than 2,000 years ago. He mentioned it in his book Elements where he discussed proportion as a means to measure the beauty of geometric shapes.

The golden ratio or divine proportion comes from applying the proportions found in nature at a universal level. You can identify this natural balance throughout the universe from plants to animals to buildings.

This concept has been applied to aesthetics in art and architecture for centuries. Artists have used it and still use it today. Architects apply the golden ratio to determine how to divide up spaces and rooms into an aesthetically pleasing way.

It’s not just about making things look pretty, however. The golden ratio helps create internal order, harmony, and unity. That’s why there are so many examples you will find around us that incorporate the golden ratio.
