Ask yourself...

What is your art style? What makes you happy when you paint? What don't you like?

Let's say you love the classics. You like studying Monet's still lifes and Van Gogh's portraits.

Everything is so clean and strong, there is plenty of white space and no color distortion.

All the details are there but not too much. You like drawing dots and tiny lines.

If you are a color freak, you will have to get used to drawing with grey instead of red. This is how the classic style works for you.

In many artists' minds, they dream of painting in a strong, classical style. However, classical technique is very difficult.

It requires years of training, a lot of inspiration and patience. With each stroke, the artist is building a piece of art that will last for thousands of years.

But, classical style doesn't have the power to make an audience feel something. It's a stiff, cold language.

No one is scared to paint in this style. When the skill, motivation and inspiration aren't in place, it just isn't any fun to paint.

The artist is not happy. The audience, however, might be happy, but they'll be bored as well.

As the artist I work with says, "If you are a decent artist, I don't need to paint your portrait, but I would like to if I am inspired. If you are so uninspired that you don't even want to paint, that's a problem."

If you are starting to doubt yourself, it's possible that you are reaching a plateau in your art style.

In a famous book about arts, Buda Castle Life by Eyal Pfeffer, the artist is considered the prime example of the artist with an unimportant art style. Even his painting of a chair in a tatty old chair is unimpressive.

In the book, he says he reached the "point where he didn't want to paint any more. At all." The reader can't help but be inspired by this painting. "I am not going to paint any more; I am just done," the artist says in the book.

It's a stark realization for anyone who paints, and shows the growing pains of an artist who must adapt to his or her style as he or she becomes more skillful.

So what does a person do when they feel stuck?

How to accept your style:

It might feel strange to paint in your style.

You are spending all your time practicing and developing your technique, but this is something that doesn't happen overnight. There will be years of improving and perfecting your art before you will feel comfortable painting in it.

Accept your style and understand that some people will be intimidated by it. If you are an abstract artist who is used to, say, painting geometric shapes, and you decide to use a strong color scheme and small dots, some people might think you are insane.

If you are not comfortable painting in your style, it doesn't mean you are a bad artist. Everyone has a style that works for them.

Some people can paint with whatever style they are in the mood for at the moment. Some can't paint in any style.

Everyone needs to find their own style and play around with it. Each artist has their own unique style, and if you love that style, it's fine to continue painting in it.

Just be aware that the style doesn't suit everyone and that it might not be for everyone. Once you realize that, you are free to experiment with more than one style.

It doesn't mean that you are weak; it means that you are free to explore.

Create a work of art that's different to what you are comfortable with!

It is not always easy to paint in your style. Many artists talk about "not being creative anymore" once they reach a certain skill level in their art.

I believe that this is a very false and negative attitude. It's a ridiculous way to think about art, creativity and practice.

You have to work hard to create something unique. Everyone has some unique style in some area of their art.

If you focus on doing something different, you'll constantly be pushing your art forward and your style might be inspired to be more expressive, more original, and your art might become more engaging and engaging.

It might feel weird to paint in the style of someone else, but sometimes you have to push yourself beyond what you are comfortable with and try something different.

Just remember, it might seem hard to paint in a style you don't like at first, but it's worth it. If you don't do it, you'll never know. Your skill level might be fine, but you might have an issue that you won't discover until you push yourself into doing it.

Sometimes just having an "awareness" of not liking what you are painting in your own style can help you push yourself to try something different. So, if you're not 100% in love with your style, don't give up.

Get into the zone and do it for a while, then come back and look at your painting and look at it again with an open mind.

This exercise will make you more open to exploring your art and finding your style. You will look at the piece of art you're working on and know that you can do it.

Even if the piece doesn't end up being your favorite piece in the end, at least you tried. Try different things and you'll find your style and the style that works for you.

This is why learning to be open-minded with your own style is a process and is often not a linear process. You will learn to paint your style and develop your own unique style as you continue to explore it.

Don't be discouraged if you can't get everything right at first. This is a process that can take a long time.

If you keep trying and keep improving, you will eventually reach a point when you know your style and you love it.
