Tips For Teaching Art To Adults

This article will discuss tips for teaching art to adults.

Just because an adult doesn't consider themselves as art connoisseurs doesn't mean they are less capable of learning and appreciating art. Learning something new is always fun, and most importantly, it gives one a sense of self-esteem and purpose.

Even though there are a lot of people with knowledge of art and its appreciation, not everyone who meets an adult with knowledge of art, knows how to learn art from them.

So, here are some tips to teaching art to adults:

1. Try to describe art

It might be difficult at first but try your best to describe what you are observing.

If you are observing Monet's painting "La Canaletes", try explaining to your adult that it depicts a canal.

If you are drawing a face on a piece of paper, try drawing what it looks like from your adult's perspective.

Remember that the whole reason you are drawing that face is that it is a face and not a spoon.

2. Try to apply art criticisms to all forms of art

Try to apply critiques to all forms of art. Not just one. This will definitely help you get rid of any bad habits, like not being able to sketch a tree properly.

But keep critiques to a minimum!

Try not to criticize art too much. For example, if you are watching a TV show and you notice an actor misbehaving, try to avoid commenting on it.

It is important for an adult to learn something from your criticism.

3. Attempt to understand the reason behind the art

Try to ask why something is drawn in a certain way.

Ask your adult why they chose to draw the way they did. This can help you learn new perspectives about art.

Many adults do not even consider their art because they were never taught about it in the first place. They don't understand why they were drawn to something.

Encourage your adult to come up with their own ideas!

The best way to get them interested is to encourage them to come up with their own ideas.

For example, if they were drawing a profile, ask them what kind of person they thought they were.

4. Observe the art while making your own ideas

At this point, you should start seeing things in a different way. You should be able to interpret the art you see in a different way.

Most of the time, people try to understand the meaning behind the artwork without even studying it.

If you are able to come up with ideas about what the artwork depicts, you can use that information to help your adult interpret the artwork better.

Think outside the box!

This is the main objective when you try to teach art to an adult.

You can do the same things as a child, but try and understand the underlying meaning behind the artwork.

For example, when you are drawing an ocarina, you should try to find the underlying meaning behind the design. If it relates to a map, then try looking up the map you are drawing.

Bring your adult into the classroom

At this point, you have the knowledge of what an ocarina is, so bringing your adult into the classroom is very easy.

Give them a stage to perform and learn from. Allow them to perform the artworks they have already done.

As a beginner, you will never learn as much as if you have someone there who is more experienced than you are.

5. Make your adult draw a self-portrait

Art is something that should never be taken too seriously. Most of the time, you are just drawing something for the fun of it.

So, it is important that you allow your adult to have fun while drawing.

Keep the same instructions the same as if they were drawing themselves. You don't want your adult to start drawing in a different way, right?

Give them options with the task!

If your adult knows how to draw, give them the option to draw anything. Don't pigeonhole them into one task.

A silhouette of an owl is something that would be an easy choice. If your adult wants to draw a self-portrait, then allow them to do so.

6. Encourage your adult to practice

If your adult hasn't tried drawing in a while, encourage them to practice.

If you are unsure how to explain what they are supposed to do, just make suggestions.

Try and see what they can do.

Get used to seeing them practice

Encourage your adult to draw in the same way every time they are going to practice. It is important for them to see the same elements of art in the same way so that they learn and get used to it.

Encourage them to draw/paint/create more than just in class, and to have them share their practice work.
