Types Of Architecture In China

As we have discussed, there are many different types of architecture that can be categorized according to their influence or effect they have on people. Some examples of this include buildings such as churches, mosques, temples, museums, and structures such as apartment complexes, office towers, and shopping centers.

Other examples are landscapes (or scenery) and urban environments. These two seem like opposite ends of the spectrum, but actually both contribute to our sense of wellbeing and happiness.

Landscapes are typically referred to as nature or serene, while urban settings are usually characterized as busy or crowded. Both types of environments provide us with an opportunity to connect with the space and the surrounding area, which is very important for personal growth.

This article will discuss another type of architectural design that has become increasingly popular worldwide – avant-garde or modern style. What makes this type unique from other styles is its emphasis on breaking away from the status quo and conventional thinking.

Avant-garde designs often feature asymmetrical shapes, unconventional materials used, and experimental ways of designing spaces and objects. In doing so, it forces you to reevaluate how things are done and gives you new ideas for creating layouts and interior decorations.

Chinese art deco

Art Deco is an architectural style that was popularized in the 1920s-1930s in various countries, most notably Spain and France. It is characterized by geometric shapes, use of materials such as steel or chrome, and bright colors.

Art déco usually features strong lines and proportioned pieces, making it very shapely. This sleek look is what makes this design style so famous today. For example, the square windows used in art deco buildings are totally unique looks!

It is interesting to note that not only did artists create art deco styles, but also architects. In fact, some say that art deco influenced modern architecture! Many think that Bauhaus, for instance, inspired the current trend of skyscrapers with glass exteriors.

However, there are many other theories about how art deco designs influence newer styles. Some believe that it directly inspired minimalist designs, while others say it had an effect on futurism. A few even claim that art deco gave rise to expressionist painting and sculpture.

There are many different types of art deco, too! People have said that neoclassical art deco resembles classic Neoclassicism, international art deco is similar to contemporary styles, and art deco revival is like old art deco styles mixed together.

Traditional Chinese architecture

In traditional Chinese culture, architypes are not used to emphasize an abstract idea or concept. Rather, they serve as representations of something more concrete – like buildings or rooms.

There are five main types of traditional architectural styles in China. They are:

Confucian temple

Dynastic palace

Gymnasium (or school)

Han-style courtyard house

Monastery

All five of these styles feature a strong sense of unity. For example, every Confucian temple features a large central axis that is lined with prayer benches and shrines. Similarly, Han style courtyards always have a central path that leads up to the house where the family lives.

These similarities give the impression of harmony and stability, which are both qualities that embody the ethos of the respective cultures.

Furthermore, each type of building fits into its own genre. A gymnasium teaches students within a controlled environment, for instance. And palaces and temples represent centers of power and knowledge, respectively.

However, even though all five architectures convey this inner peace, none of them resemble one another greatly. This is because they were designed according to different philosophies and cultural values.

Architectural influences in China

All styles of architecture have their roots somewhere, usually built upon or influenced by something else. Some examples are the Roman temple style that we now know as Classical Greece, Gothic influence with its pointed arches and steep roofs, and the neoclassical style which is still very popular today.

In Chinese culture, there’s one major architectural element that has heavily shaped the way people build homes and buildings – the courtyard.

Courtyard houses are probably one of the most common types of house you will see in any part of Asia. They’re also pretty easy to find outside of China!

A courtyard house was once the norm throughout much of East Asian history. It’s not too surprising then that they would eventually make their way into other cultures and be adapted to fit those environments.

The reason why they’re so prevalent in the region is because it’s an efficient use of space. A lot of Eastern culture values harmony and balance, making having a large open area in your home important.

Top architectural wonders in China

The Great Wall is one of the most well-known monuments in China. It’s also one of the most expensive!

The wall was built over several centuries, but it wasn’t until around 220 BC that it really stood out as an imposing barrier to would be invaders. By then however, it had served its purpose for more than two thousand years — protecting northern China from invading tribes and larger empires.

It took more than twenty five hundred years to construct, making it not only one of the largest manmade structures ever constructed (it covers approximately seven miles long), but also one of the longest lasting ones.

Sadly, much of the wall has been destroyed or covered up due to encroaching civilization, but what remains still puts some awe into people who admire monumental architecture.

Another famous monument in China is Tian'anmen Square, which is home to the country's tallest building – the National Museum of History. Designed by Wang Fuwen, this structure boasts impressive use of space and beautiful decorations.

There are many other unique buildings in China such as the Shanghai World Financial Center, Jin Mao Tower, and Beijing University Central Campus among others. All three of these have very distinctive shapes that make them stand out.

Great Zhejiang architecture

In Chinese culture, there are many references to buildings and their importance. One such example is the famous saying ‘Jiě de zhèjiàng’ (经得适合; well adapted for use). This says that things with good qualities, or functions, should be built using solid materials and designed accordingally.

A great example of this is the Ta-Kuan House in Ningbo. Designed by Liang Jingyi, one of China’s most renowned architects, it was completed in 2008.

The house has been awarded several prizes since its completion including the Aga Khan Award for Architectural Excellence, the Gold Prize at the World Habitat Awards, and the Outstanding Contribution prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects – RIBA International Design Award.

Not only does the house look beautiful, but it also makes a strong statement about the owner’s sense of style. The clean lines and simple shapes make it very elegant while the large windows allow lots of natural light into the space.

This article might seem a little tangential, but I feel like it will help give you some more insights into why the Ta-Kuan House is so impressive.

Great Beijing architecture

The city that rose to prominence during the Ming and Qing dynasties is arguably one of the greatest architectural legacies of ancient China. Architectural styles from across Asia can be found all over modern-day Beijing, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes these buildings so beautiful.

Many believe that the use of simple lines and natural colors gives Beijing’s buildings their striking appeal. Others praise the incorporation of Buddhist motifs like curved roofs or lotus shapes.

Whatever style appeals to you, there are plenty to admire! While some may consider Chinese architecture boring or stereotypical, I think we should appreciate how well they integrated local traditions while also introducing new ones.

There are several famous landmarks in Beijing that showcase great architectural designs. Some of my favorite sites include Tian'anmen Square, the National Art Museum of China, and the Palace of Congresses. All three feature beautifully designed structures with interesting decorations and layouts.

Great Shanghai architecture

While some may consider Chinese architecture to be very similar from region to region, that is definitely not the case. There are several styles that seem to seep out everywhere, but none more than the architectural style we will discuss here!

The great thing about this style is that it was designed and implemented for function over form. The buildings in this style are never intended to be pretty, they are always efficient and practical.

This can sometimes make them look ugly or plain like a normal wall. However, when used properly these walls can become aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. When you run into one of these buildings, you have to acknowledge their beauty even if you do not agree with what functions they serve.

These types of buildings include the famous Bund skyscrapers along with other sleek office towers and residential complexes. They are also common in mainland China where large cities offer beautiful scenery.

Great Chengdu architecture

Chengdu, or 'the very place where dragons live', is famous for its rich architectural heritage that includes everything from imperial palaces to modern skyscrapers. The first things you will notice about Chengdu's architecture are all the roofs!

There are so many beautiful roof forms here it is hard to pick one favorite style. Some have to be seen to be believed like the rooftop palace with its three stepped gables or even just looking at the diversity of shapes within a single building.

Another common feature is glazed tiles which give buildings their beautifully shiny surface. There are several types of tile used including plain white ceramic, coloured glass or patterned metal ones.

Architecture in Chengdu has a strong influence coming from different cultures such as Japan, India and Europe. All these styles can still be found together in one project, demonstrating how important culture is to local architects.
