The term “architecture” has many different definitions depending on who you ask. For some, architecture is designing skyscrapers or large-scale buildings such as universities or shopping malls. Others define it more broadly to include spaces like restaurants or bathrooms that are not necessarily built from scratch but require little to no design.
Regardless of what kind of architecture you consider, one thing everyone agrees upon is that great architects create spaces and environments that people want to be in and enjoy spending time in. They also make settings that invite people to come together and spend time together.
Harvard University is known for having some of the most beautiful architectural landmarks in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Some examples of this are the academic quad where students attend class, the famous crimson red roofs, and the impressive stone walls surrounding campus.
These types of features were designed with intention. By looking at past designs, current trends, and knowledge of physics, the designers were able to implement their vision into the space. It is clear that someone had a passion for creating beautifully curved surfaces and interesting textures.
However, there is another type of building that does not have heavily decorated exteriors. These are referred to as non-curved spires or von Neumann architectures.
What Are Non-Curved Spires?
Non-curved spires are defined by their shape. Rather than being rounded or squared off, they get thinner the farther away you are.

The term “Harvard style” is typically attached to large, bulky buildings with tall ceilings. These types of spaces are characterized by open floor layouts and large windows or openings.
The use of bright colors contributes to how aesthetically pleasing these buildings become. By using lots of white space and bright colors, the building is shown off as being powerful and spacious.
Many people associate Harvard styles with big business, so they feel that the builders and owners of this style have built successful companies and homes.
This theory also implies that since these buildings look very impressive, then their owners must be too! However, this assumption is false because the size of the building has little to do with whether it makes you happy to live in it or not.
Von Neumann architectures
You may have heard the word “von Neumann” before. This term refers to an architectural design pattern that was created in the 1950s during the height of computer technology.
Since computers at that time were small and expensive, engineers designed ways to make them work efficiently while keeping cost down.
One way they did this was to have each individual component perform one specific function. For example, instead of having separate components for input, processing, and output, there would be just one processor chip which could handle all three functions.
Similarly, instead of having separate hard drive storage units, only one would be used to hold everything.

In computing, von Neumann architectures are designed around having separate processing units that work independently of each other, but are connected together in some way to make computations possible.
This system was invented by Hungarian mathematician Norbert Wiener in his book The Formalism of Mathematics. He called this connection process “feedback” because it creates an effect where one part affects another part (for example, when you hit something hard, your body reacts).
In von Neumann systems, these feedbacks occur only within the individual parts themselves — there is no longer any concept of outside sources or influences influencing the computer.
That means every piece has its own internal source of power and inspiration, and can operate completely autonomously without interference from anyone else. This also makes it harder to control the machine; if someone takes away their tool, they may be able to run the program, but they will not be able to do anything beyond basic tasks.
[Something like] chess computers… __________
Von Neumann architectures have a very rich history as the basis for many modern-day computer programs. They still remain quite common, even among software developers who want more complex apps than a chess game!
Harvard styles, however, seem to have less influence today. While some architects use concepts related to them, most people associate the term with pure, minimal forms.

The reason why there is such a big difference in architectural styles comes down to how each architect approaches building design.
Harvard style architects believe that form follows function, which means their buildings look elegant because they are designed to do something very well. For example, a beautiful skyscraper may be intentionally ugly as it aims to impress by having large windows or tall roofs.
This isn’t always the case with von Neumann architecture though- some forms seem purely for aesthetic beauty without any practical applications. A classic example of this is Italian villas, where sprawling estates aim to inspire awe with their lavish decorations.
A famous movie set in Italy features a series of mansions with similar floor plans and decoration schemes, showing just how popular this type of house is.

So what is the difference between Harvard architecture and von Neumann architecture? Well, first let’s look at why they are both important to software projects.
Harvard style architectures promote horizontal communication and integration. By encouraging interaction with other departments or teams in your organization, it becomes easy for different groups to collaborate and work together. This also helps keep people within their respective areas of responsibility by giving them access to resources they need to do their job.
von Neumann style architectures promote vertical separation. Vertical segregation encourages independent tasks that can be done independently without external influence or input.
This separate task orientation allows individuals to focus only on one part of the project, which promotes efficiency and speed of execution. It also gives each individual in the team autonomy and independence so they feel like they have enough freedom to take appropriate action towards reaching project goals.
Software using a Harvard style interface tends to be more integrated than software using a vertical design. For example, most web applications use horizontal designs where users can interact with various parts of the application simultaneously, but apps designed using the vertical model depend heavily on seclusion.
That way, if one area doesn’t perform well, you don’t lose too much overall functionality. With apps that are more integrated though, this would be harder to achieve.

While both are considered very influential, one is more popular than the other. This comes down to what your company’s goals are and how much time you have to spend designing buildings.
If you work in an industry that doesn’t produce many products, then hiring someone with architectural training can be helpful in shaping their look and feel. They could even help you come up with new ideas or give input on whether something looks good or not.
That isn’t the case if you run a business that needs to launch a product as soon as possible. If this sounds like you, then you should probably stick with von Neumann architecture.

Many famous structures make heavy uses of either one or the other, but what is the difference between using only one type of organization? And which one is better?
That depends on the goal of the building and who you want to associate with your brand. If you are looking to create an intimate feeling space, then keeping it simple can be best.
If you want to convey status, then clearly defining off-limits areas and segregating people by profession or position can help achieve that.
But if you want to connect more deeply with others, then avoiding boundaries and instead promoting communal work spaces and sharing resources is probably your best bet.

While not always agreed upon, there is one architecture style that most would agree has perfected the art of building structure – the von Neumann or matrix organization.
This theory was first proposed by Hungarian mathematician Martin Emil Julius Victor von Neumann in his book The Theory of Automata. In it he describes how self-organizing systems come together to make up larger structures. This concept can be applied to any system, from biological cells all the way up to cities and corporations!
The main components of this architecture are functionaries (or workers) who carry out tasks under direct supervision, and executives (or leaders) who manage and inspire others. Both of these characters work independently outside of each other, but when put together, they create an efficient machine that achieves your goals.
Generalists are good at many things, so they serve as supervisors that give direction to other professionals around them. People who are smart and have lots of skills are like employees who contribute to the company in various ways. Executives are also referred to as managers, directors, or leadership positions.
There you have it! That is really all you need to know about the basic concepts of von Neuman architecture.

Recent trends in architecture have been characterized by either what is referred to as Harvard or von Neumann style. The term “Harvard style” was first used to describe large, corporate buildings with very little character.
The architects would use clean lines, minimal decoration, and advanced technology to create efficient interior spaces for employees.
A famous example of this style is the Apple Headquarters in California which has become synonymous with efficiency and productivity.
The opposite style is sometimes called “Von Neumann style” after Hungarian-American mathematician John von Neumann. He coined the terms “centralized control” and “decentralized action.”
With his theory, every part of an organization works towards one goal while being able to independently perform its job without direct supervision from another area. This concept applies well to computer software!
This sounds perfect for a company that wants to maximize productivity, but it can be applied to any type of business — even yours. How? Read on.
