Recent developments in computer technology have led to different styles of software architectures, or how computers are organized. One style is called von Neumann architecture after its inventor, John von Neumann.
von Neumann architecture was built upon two basic concepts- central processing unit (CPU) and memory. The CPU does all the work, while memory holds information that the CPU processes.
The way this works is by the CPU executing an instruction in memory to process data in memory. The processor can only do so much at one time, so it saves what it has done and moves onto the next thing later. This creates a very efficient design as you don’t need extra components to keep track of what the last task was!
Another concept in von Neumann architecture is input and output. These are things like keyboards and monitors, which users interact with programmatically.
Inputs and outputs aren’t processed by the CPU, they are handled separately. For example, when someone types something into a search box on Google, the web browser doesn’t perform any mathematical computations. It simply passes the text people type into the website automatically.
Harvard architecture differs from von Neumann architecture because the CPU also includes registers. A register is similar to having a separate notebook full of notes. You can take notes in this notebook and organize them however you want – no matter what else you are doing, you can always go back and look through your notes.
According to some architectural theorists, Harvard buildings are characterized by clean lines and proportion. These include shapes such as rectangles, squares, or circles that seem to flow easily into each other.
The reasoning for this is that everything in your environment has influenced you to be organized and structured – from childhood lessons to working with numbers to having social interactions with people.
This can carry over onto your day-to-day life and work, making it easy to organize and structure tasks. The easier it is to do so, the more likely you are to perform these tasks successfully.
In fact, researchers have determined that being exposed to a lot of order and organization makes us feel confident and comfortable in our surroundings, which helps us form strong bonds with others around us.
It also may make us happier because we perceive our lives as orderly and preplanned.
In computing, von Neumann architecture is an approach to designing computer systems that have influenced many modern architectures. This theory was proposed by Hungarian mathematician John von Neumann in his paper The Organisation of Computer Systems.
von Neumann believed that every component in a computer has access to all other components, which allows for faster processing times as there are fewer steps needed to perform an operation.
This concept applies not only to individual processors, but also to memory and hard drives. Because everything is accessible, it is easy to add more RAM or storage space, which can keep up with the demands of software.
Von Neumann’s idea still reigns supreme today. Most computers use some variation of this design philosophy.
According to MIT’s courses, the defining feature of von Neumann architecture is that it uses “divide and conquer” strategies to manage complexity. By breaking down tasks into smaller pieces, you can easily re-assemble all of the parts later.
This approach makes sense when working with computers because we use this system to program them!
By thinking about problems in terms of sets, or groups, of discrete steps, they become more manageable. It also gives us the opportunity to take breaks and come back to a problem at any time. This concept applies to other areas like organizing a house, designing a room, or even creating an office space.
Von Neumann systems are great for things that have separate components, such as laptops, phones, and televisions. They create independent interfaces so users don’t need to know how one device works in order to work with another one. For example, someone doesn’t need to know how a cable TV box connects to your phone, computer, or television to be able to watch movies or surf the web.
However, according to HIA, while this strategy is helpful when designing individual devices, it does not apply well to buildings and urban spaces due to their connected nature. As environments evolve over time, new connections emerge which must be addressed, making the design process much harder.
A good way to think about this is using examples of technology from today.
The term “architecture” has evolved quite a bit since its introduction by the ancient Greeks. In modern times, there are two main types that people recognize as distinct styles. These are known as Harvard architecture and von Neumann architecture.
With Harvard architecture, you have separate rooms or areas for each function of your business. For example, in an accounting firm, there would be one room for doing accounts, another for managing payroll, and another for legal services.
This style is most common in businesses that have several different departments. Because every department has their own space, no one feels like they are being excluded or not included because everyone else is in close proximity to each other.
Von Neumann architecture is opposite this. Here, all functions under one roof with one area. This way, if someone needs to go talk to someone about something private, then they must do so in public where anyone can watch.
It creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for employees and visitors. Also, because everything is in one place, it is hard to keep secrets when someone comes across something sensitive.
There is also less natural flow between spaces due to the large size of the building. It may feel disconnected and unorganized.
Harvard architecture is most commonly associated with large, powerful corporations that want to project an image of strength and stability.
It’s characterized by clean lines, proportioned shapes, and functionality as its main themes. Buildings designed in this style are typically known for their ease of use and practicality.
Harvard buildings often have beautiful interior designs as well. The architects would probably be more concerned about how many people can fit into the space than whether the space was shaped like a square or a circle.
A famous example of Harvard architecture is the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey which has been hailed as one of the best skyscraper sites in America.
Von Neumann architectures, on the other hand, are better described as sleek, futuristic, and dramatic. They are usually inspired by nature or technology.
The iconic shape of the International Space Station is a perfect example of von Neumann architecture. A classic von Neumann building looks very streamlined and elegant.
Some say this design element was inspired after wheat fields in Germany. Others believe it resembles the shape of a brain.
Whatever inspiration gave birth to it, engineers love this shape because you cannot place anything within it without making a lot of room for something else! This effect creates a sense of excitement since you never know what you will run into next.
Another way to describe von Neumann architecture is formal efficiency. It focuses on maximizing spaces and functions so everything works properly.
Over the past few years, there has been an explosion in popularity of what is known as “software engineering” or more commonly referred to as just “engineering.” This term was coined back in 2008 when Eric Roberts mentioned it during his talk at the Object Oriented Programming (OOP) conference. Since then, it has become one of the top buzzwords in technology.
Software engineers are not necessarily trained architects, but they do spend a lot of time thinking about how things are built and organized. They think about logical structures and organizational systems in terms of computer programs.
This article will discuss the fundamentals of software architecture with special focus on two different types: Harvard and von-Neuman.

While both systems have their strong points, there is one major difference between them in terms of design. Harvard style architecture uses proportion as its main structural element.
In other words, when looking at a building or structure, you will look not only at how tall it is, but also what width it is and how much space it occupies within its surrounding area. These proportions are used to determine where the emphasis of the structure lies- whether it be strength or beauty.
This system was most famously applied in the work of Mies van der Rohe, who designed many skyscrapers using this approach. More recent architects suchas Daniel Liechty use this concept in buildings that emphasize technology and efficiency over aesthetics.
Von Neuman style architectures, however, do not rely on proportions for their appeal. Rather than emphasizing balance and harmony, they stress internal organization. The way groups of lines intersect with each other create an effect similar to that of neurons in your brain. This analogy makes sense because these intersections help organize information and ideas inside the body – just like our brains!
Any two lines can connect at any angle, which creates different shapes and patterns. Some examples of von Neuman styles include Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, and even some forms of Modernism.
In terms of implementation, there is one major difference between Harvard architecture and von Neumann architecture that makes an important distinction. With Harvard architecture, every component in the system has access to all other components in the system. This means that any given piece of software can use any other part as a reference or source of information and data.
As you can imagine, this opens up many more possibilities for what the individual pieces of software can be used for. For example, using Facebook as a reference, every other piece of software could easily download new photos or updates from your profile.
This also creates problems if people are trying to prevent others from accessing their personal information- it’s virtually impossible! All parts of the software must work with each other, so they have to offer some way to share information outside the system, otherwise everything breaks down.
The same goes for adding new functions to the system – anything beyond just connecting to external services needs to interact with those services, too, or the whole thing falls apart. Because of this, every part of the software needs to be very well designed, and built with care.
