Why Are Artists Important In Society? - A Reflection

But first, what exactly do we mean by "artist?"

An artist is defined as a person who is motivated by the desire to express ideas and concepts through creative endeavors.

Whether through song, dance, acting, writing, or other mediums, an artist’s intentions are to create a work of art to move and inspire others.
Artists, being people who typically identify as “different”, can communicate ideas, thoughts, and emotions to others.

They often rely on personal experiences to create work that causes a reaction, and also connect the audience to the artist’s heart.

Interestingly enough, “arts” is also used to describe other things.

For example, “A musician is a person who plays the clarinet”, or “A cook is a person who stirs pans and concocts things in them”.

Perhaps another way to understand this is that, although there is no real agreement on what “arts” actually are (so I’m using it loosely here), and despite its definition as “creative endeavors”, there are many things that are done in the world that are “arts” that are simply not always considered a “professional”.

Art as a key method of communication

Art is just a tool to help people forget about their problems, and remember what is important.

However, it is still important to remember that art is in fact a form of communication, and if people don’t understand it, they will not be able to understand you, and therefore they will not be able to understand you art, nor will they understand your message.

Artists are generally stubborn and do not like to lose in any way.

They know that their biggest enemy is not the media, but rather, the people who criticize them. They see it as something that is essential in building a career, because without that pressure and criticism you will not grow, you will stagnate and there is no need to do that. Artists need to be merciless in this regard and treat critics with the same energy they use when painting.

If you love what you do, it is in your own interest to treat critics with the same ruthless way, because if you don’t, you will never make it in the industry and will always end up on the other side of society.

Artists define culture.

Artists define nearly every culture around the world, more so than any other class of people.

People look to artists to help understand themselves and their existence, and it's no wonder that given all the mysteries in the world, we take solace in the art around us.

Criticism of artists

Another reason people ridicule artists is because of their willingness to stand up for what they believe in, but yet again, they are also shunned and put down in the process, for no reason at all.

The most common one that happens to artists in this society is that they will be seen as snobs, when in reality they are just extremely passionate about their work and many times find inspiration in the most “common” things in life.

People will think that because they have painted a scene of a sunset or a mountain range that they are anti-society and are not willing to assimilate in society.

The problem is that society does not look at art in a scientific, objective way, when in fact it should and it actually tries to at times. It’s just because the approach to it is too subjective for people to understand.

It’s a misconception that artists have to be more critical and always talking about their work and being judgmental, because in reality they are people like you and I, with their own families and problems to deal with. Many times they need to recharge their batteries, and that’s why they need to draw.

There are many people in this world who are miserable, for whatever reason and every now and then a bright light can appear, even if it only appears for a moment, and a voice that can actually save them from their dark and gloomy day.

My journey to becoming an artist

At the age of 22, I found myself teaching English abroad, and I received a chance to reevaluate my life.

The constant change of scenery gave me a chance to focus on how I could use my past experiences and influence my future decisions. I did not want my days to be filled with uncertainty, so I made a commitment to myself to better my life.

Through education and travel, I developed the desire to become an artist. Having a passion for art helps fuel your motivation, and allows you to progress quickly towards a goal. It not only makes you more creative, it improves your problem-solving skills, and your overall perception of the world.

The freedom that comes from an artist is something I found extremely valuable. The ability to be creative allows you to help others in a way that is very different from conventional jobs. The chance to contribute and create is something I find extremely exciting. What is even more exciting is the fact that you have the ability to positively change someone’s life in an instant.

When people are inspired by your work, they will be compelled to tell others.

In my experience, when people have a reaction to your work, they will often keep talking about it.

They will tell the world that they “can’t stop thinking about it”, or “what was that song about?”. They will share stories about how your work affected them, and provide inspiring feedback. It can take a long time to develop relationships with a great deal of people, but this type of connection is vital for an artist.

Before I went to South Korea, I was told about a growing scene of up-and-coming artists. I wanted to see what was happening in the competitive scene. It is common knowledge that the major league scene of game DOTA is highly competitive, however, there is a world outside of that.

In terms of competitions, South Korea has a gaming league that attracts international gamers such as From China With Love, iG, Invictus Gaming, LGD.int, and MYM.

It has been this team that has been responsible for bringing all of these foreign players together to compete. Although it is not a traditional way of professional gaming, it does give new players the chance to compete at a high level.

I began to notice a common thread of people who worked on these teams.

They all had a desire to work towards becoming an artist.
