What is the point of being a Dance Teacher?

Many dance teachers enjoy getting paid to teach a group of people and feel like they are making a difference in the dance world. However, others feel that they aren't appreciated.

Here are some of the reasons why certain dance teachers may be mean:

They only care about themselves

It's no surprise that these teachers are hard on their students.

This is often seen in the film Hairspray. Whenever Tracy Turnblad was being a brat and refused to dance her next routine, Miss Velma pulled a chair out and sat it in front of her!

The dance was going badly until this gesture! You can imagine how Tracy Turnblad felt.

Some dance teachers may not care about their students in general. However, they will get extremely defensive when you bring up a problem or complain to them about your lessons.

They may not even believe you! Some may even feel that you must have it all together if you have a problem with them.

They refuse to admit that they have a problem

If a teacher is proud of their own dance abilities, they may continue to do just that! It's not very likely that a teacher will realize that they are being mean!

Even if a teacher realizes they are being mean, they won't change their behavior.

They refuse to take responsibility

Many teachers have a terrible attitude. In most cases, it isn't their fault that they are not very easy to get along with.

They could be extremely hard to get along with, but it may not be their fault.

How to deal with dance teachers that are mean:

If you are in a dance class and a dance teacher is being mean, you should consider getting out of the dance class. Instead of spending time with someone that you feel like is not treating you well, you should find a new dance teacher!

There are many alternatives to a dance class, so you may be able to find something else.

First, you should take this into consideration: Do you want to spend hours of your day with someone who is being mean? Most likely, no!

Unless you want to get a private lesson or master level class, you may want to avoid taking this type of dance teacher.

Take some time to analyze the situation. Is this the teacher's personality or a case of things not being easy with your teacher?

Does the dance teacher need to be adjusted? Have you approached the teacher before?

If so, what happened? Did they even answer? What do your friends and colleagues think about this situation?

If you feel like you are dealing with a difficult teacher, then you need to keep your cool. Take some time to think about your situation and think of possible solutions.

How Do I Get the Teacher's Attention?

When a dance teacher does not like you, they will often be less likely to take your suggestion. You should be aware that this teacher may be trying to ignore you or not take you seriously.

Instead of taking this personally, you need to think about how you can get the teacher's attention!

If the dance teacher will not take you seriously, you should take your experience and think about your next step. Think about the problem and come up with ways to solve it.

Once you have a plan, take action.

Is there another instructor you could use? Ask your friends or colleagues to recommend a different dance instructor.

You should think about this situation like you would a request to change your healthcare provider. You should be willing to try other teachers to see if they are better for your needs.

If you are not happy with another dance instructor, you can always go back to this dance teacher!

If the teacher is actually not a bad person and does not hate your dance experience, it's okay to feel frustrated with the situation. However, if they are a bad person, you need to think about what you should do.

If they are a horrible person, you will be able to get a great dance teacher.

Take a deep breath and try to keep a cool head. Look into your options and think about possible solutions.

This dance teacher may just be less than perfect for you.

What can I do if I start to notice mean behavior?

If a teacher is normally rude to you, you should stay friendly with them as long as you can, but this is much more difficult for younger students. Try to encourage other students to be friendly too.

If you are very upset about the teacher's behavior, you may want to speak to a teacher you respect.

Tell the teacher you don't like their attitude. Sometimes all a teacher needs is a simple reminder to change their behavior. Say, "I noticed you were being mean again, and I just thought you could do a better job of being friendly and happy to see me."

Some teachers do a much better job of making students happy and supportive than others. This can help a student who is having a difficult time.

If you are at an appointment with a teacher you don't respect, you should switch to a teacher who is good at being kind.
