Why Does Concept Art Always Look Better?

This article will discuss why does concept art always look better than 3D model in cinema industry.

Because, every cinema artist is involved with final product, such as props, costumes and set designing. Conceptualization always comes first for the look of the film.

And, also, we artists should know the concept of design so we can take to screenplay and start designing storyboard.

Concept art:

Storyboards of many cinematic works including the first film “Jurassic Park” were shown with stick drawings. They’re a big part of production. 3D art:

Those of us who has have done most of their lives in animation would think that 3D process is amazing. But, have you ever thought that 3D has many challenges when it comes to the look of film and how we have to combine hand drawn art with computer generated art.

3D creation is much easier in film than other disciplines. Since, 3D is all about your imagination, like art of any other discipline. The animators, prop masters, set designers, make-up artists, etc. and really know the look of the character and the places.

So, in “Jurassic Park” we had Christopher McQuarrie and Chris Wedge is the writer. Chris did most of his screen writing in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

He really knows what character or movie should look like. So, he offered to do concept work and then present it to scriptwriter Bob Gale for approval.

How Christopher McQuarrie “Marvel’s Iron Man” turned a 3D printer into a 3D sculpture:

Why do we artists always overestimate ourselves? To make something better.

The reason why 3D process always looks better is mostly because of computer generated art, such as illustrations, in graphic design, and 3D digital art. Conceptualization is a huge part of production.

It should be done before the hands on. At this step you’re free to think of your character in the coolest way.

Hands on needs to have a lot of patience and lots of times you have to cut out some sketch to make it simpler and to look better. It really takes time, also to do it right. So, always make sure you can see the finished product first.

If we compare concept art to other mediums, such as illustration or graphic design, that’s usually the first step you would do for your work. One of the most challenging part of illustration is to convey your ideas to other people.

With graphic design, it’s really just transfer of ideas from you to other designer. With illustration it’s even easier to see the final product.

But, when you have a chance to work on a big budget film or television show, it takes a lot of time for you to finalize the look of your character.

The main process of film production is shown with 1st set of storyboards, so we artists need to have clear vision for the character, with the perfect direction, and very final in any way.

I mean if you’re working on a game you just need to make the concept look great.

So, you just need to imagine your character in best way and then we make it for you and for the director.

If you are a concept artist, and you want to see the process from beginning to end of the production of the concept art of our project, you can check my layout to get more information about how our team was doing it.

Concept art or 3D concept artwork can be finished in different way like drawing, sketching, character design, etc. But the most popular way in movie and video game production is to sketch in the computer.

When you’re done with the computer design, you will have a basic 3D model that you can send to our 3D printer to create your final final product. The process of 3D printing can be somewhat different in each art.

In 3D modeling we have to first define the 3D features of our model by formulating each 3D shape in our sketch. Then, we have to fill in texture with various textures like in fantasy world you have to fill your shapes with iridescent look.

Also, we have to take care of the performance or silhouette of the model by following the principals.

In texture creation, we first have to define our primitives like facial features. The main primitives are the mouth, eyes, the eyebrows, the forehead, etc.

After the primitives have been defined, we will add the following details to them: shadows, lighting, motion blur, etc. Then we’ll do hair, skin, clothing, etc.

In this step, we will do all the motions, size, and position of the 3D model. After we’ve finished all of the elements we have to look for the most difficult task.

Our next step is to prepare the facial muscles and optimize the lighting and shadowing of the model to achieve the right appearance.

As you can see, the process of 3D printing is not exactly similar to traditional art but it’s really cool process because we can see our final product straight away. We just need to prepare 3D models, and place the finished files in our printers.
