Quick Facts about Graphic Design!

Looking for a unique job to help you earn money on the side while you're finishing up your studies? We’ve put together a list of these other interesting positions.

The idea behind graphic design:

The term 'graphic design' originated in the early 18th century with the invention of printing presses in Great Britain. It has its roots in printing, an art form based on line, shape and color.

Although printing and art are both visual forms of expression, they are two different forms of communication. Whereas art is often regarded as a personal expression of a creator's feelings or internal thoughts, printing is done in order to make some sort of product.

Many people associate the term 'graphic design' with posters, brochures, invitations, posters, logos, magazines and other printed material.

However, the word also describes digital graphics, which includes computer and mobile interfaces, logos, website design, and print production. In all of its forms, graphic design is very common and has been around for thousands of years.

In fact, before a digital device was invented, graphic design was something people did through a very different medium: the movable type printing press.

This was done mostly with woodblock printing, which was typically done on a large scale in order to create books. This type of printing is similar to other types of printing, such as offset lithography, gravure printing and screen printing.

The first known use of a type of typography known as cursive type was around 825 AD. In cursive type, written words are often written in one large unbroken line that traces the original letter form.

Many of today's fonts use a cursive style. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the invention of the movable type press changed the way people wrote and had an impact on the graphic design field.

This made it easier to create printed materials, and especially so for newspapers.

The birth of graphic design;

At this point in history, printed materials were mostly used to communicate information, rather than purely for aesthetics. However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the printing press became a way for artists to show off their work and share it with the public.

It is also at this time that graphic design gained popularity as a way to illustrate books, articles, postcards, magazines and more.

In the late 19th century, the invention of the practical desktop computer allowed people to make designs that used just a few key strokes on a computer. The designers of this new technology knew that this new technology was going to revolutionize the way people saw and talked about the world.

Almost everyone was familiar with typewriters at this time, but many were not aware of what the computer would do for the art world.

This came as a surprise to some people at the time, including Sir Kodzo Baldwin of Sydney University. He was among the first to see the potential of this new technology.

Another early adopter in graphic design was Leonard Abbott, an Englishman who developed the first pen and paper layout program.

At the beginning of the 20th century, printing methods were changing and the popular idea of the printing press was rapidly becoming obsolete.
